Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (1 Viewer)

The PFT and Foxsports "source" is one and the same (Michael David Smith). Also, can you find anything on PFW's website to confirm this? It looks like might be an article this guy wrote and put on his page...he may have mixed up PFW with PFT.

So make it 2 sources then (PFT/Fox, poster on forum)... :ezbill:

I'm looking on PFW right now to see if there is something...

CB Samuel's agent tries to reel Bucs into negotiations

We hear the agent of CB Asante Samuel is trying to pull the Bucs into the sweepstakes to sign his client when free agency begins Feb. 29, but it would be a surprise if Tampa had much serious interest in Samuel's services. Alonzo Shavers, Samuel's agent, told the Tampa Tribune that "Tampa is a situation that makes sense. Tampa Bay is definitely worth considering. It was an organization that was in the Super Bowl not too long ago. It is an organization Asante wants to play for." The Bucs figure to be an aggressive player in free agency, with more than $30 million in estimated cap space, but it's far more likely funds will be spent on free-agent playmakers at wide receiver and tight end. Samuel is said to be eyeing a contract that would be pay him $10 million per year. He would be a definite upgrade over CB Phillip Buchanon, and a starting tandem of Samuel and Ronde Barber would give Tampa a star-studded secondary. Yet, in the end, we hear the Saints and Eagles are more likely to shell out the necessary cash for the Pro Bowler.

That does not sound promising.

So it looks like its us or the Iggles and most have us as a front runner. If we lose and the Phili gets him then maybe we could trade for Lito as a consolation prize....I would rather have Samuel(-s) but Lito wouldn't be as bad as settling for Gay or Florence.

Why?

I just can't see the Bucs, a bonafide tampa-2 defense, shelling out $10 million a year for a CB. That's sorta like Denver going all out to acquire a superstar RB. Why overpay for a star when you've got a system that allows even mediocre/average players to excel at the same position?

Makes no sense.

If the Saints agree to the 100 million dollar deal and Tampa offers 125 million with a bigger signing bonus before Samuel signs with us, he'll be a Buc. If not, he signs with the Saints. We might have a deal in place but it's highest bidder wins until that contract is signed.

But the odds the Bucs offer that much for a CB they don't value highly are slim. The Bucs, like Indy, simply don't need great CBs.

You can change the money and teams around. I just mean that even if Samuel agreed to a deal with the Saints, he'll sign with another team if they offer more money. That's why his agent is trying to get all these teams interested.

That's true for every player and every team, essentially. But if he is offered more, I'm sure his agent will shoot that number back to us, looking for us to top it.

Samuel is from Florida isn't he? I suspect he'd prefer Tampa over New Orleans. That said, while Tampa recently clearing so much more space concerns me, I have a hard time believing Tampa would drop that kind of cash on CB for their philosophy, especially after all those years of shorting Brian Kelly. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

It's all about the money and the Saints * need * a real shutdown corner and I hope they get him .

With Samuel, that would be great. I understand signing Samuel. But, he alone isn't going to get it done.

No one said he was.... :dunno:

Where is it written that we can't sign Samuel AND draft a CB, DT, MLB and a #2 or #3 Wideout? We have plenty of cap room. So why sign a guy like Florence (6 Int in last 3 years - 45 games), wholost his starting job last season and try to plug him in as a starter here?!? Personally I'd rather build the team through the draft than just go nuts in FA. To my mind, it's a more prudent, long-term approach. But if the Front Office feels like a top playmaker is what we need at a particular position, and they can attract him - that's fine by me! In the free agency: if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

As per Florence in 2007 - according to FO.com "Charting Defensive Backs 2007" analysis he ranked as 5th worst CB in the League in terms of success rate when targetted (41% - Jason David was worst with 32%) and 4th worst in terms of yards given up per pass (10.6 - again JD was the worst with an amazing 14.5 yards per pass). It's little wonder the Bolts aren't resigning him. And you'd still like to see him in our secondary would you?

Indeed, I don't think we're looking at another Zach Thomas situation. Samuel is (quite reasonably in my opinion) looking to get the most amount of money, for himself and his family, while he is still young. Of course if the two offers (ours and the Bucs) were to ultimately top out at around the same figure, unfortunately I think Samuel would probably go to Tampa - but hey... we're all used to having our hopes crushed like a kitten beneath the wheels of a Lorry anyway!
