Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (1 Viewer)

Chi we have plugged in low tier free agents at the wrong spots. You can't go without a real MLB as the Saints have proven for years. You can't have marginal players as starters along the front seven but you can at CB. Thats where that line of thinking is flawed.

We have filled our need position with low tier free agents, this time we need to fill those spots with rookies who bring athletism and speed to the positoin we can live with the mistakes because its been proven time and time again, vets make just as many mistakes...playing rookies or drafting rookies to start doesnt mean they are gonna go out there and not know whats going on, there not gonna go left when they should of went right, people have to stop being scared of playing young guys, we been doing this for years now (relying on vets) then drafting BPA which usually results in us getting a guy who plays a position of strenght on our team already or wasnt a need, but he was "just to good to pass up".

I am going to go on record here and say that if all this comes to fruition and the Saints do indeed sign Asante Samuel it will be a mistake IMO. There is no need whatsoever to break the bank and overspend on a CB. All I can hope for is that Loomis & company use their brains on this one and say thanks but no thanks to Samuel. If the Broncos starting CB's & Nate Clements doesn't spell it out nothing will. Samuels to Saints is a very bad idea IMO.
I know you don't want to lose your starting spot Jason but we need to do something.

Gil Brandt just said on the NFL Channel on Sirius that he bumped into Gary Gibbs and Joe Vitt at an airport on Tues....he said they made it extremely clear that the Saints were going heavy after Samuel.

Nothing we haven't guessed, but still great to hear!

The quicker we make the move, the more allegations of tampering there's gonna be. The longer we take, the more offers he's going to get elsewhere.
I say we make it by an hour after the deadline and try and make a massive early impact and show we mean business.
That might even have an effect on other free agent's views.

Thanks for sharing. Gil Brandt is a VERY respected figure in the NFL. These comments regarding Samuel have more credibility than the various reports that are circulating.

Initially, I felt that Samuel would want too much money for his value; however, more and more I am pleased that the Saints are being aggressive to shore up obvious deficiencies. If we overspend for Samuel, so be it.

Sure lets just throw caution to wind for an overhyped CB who will be burnt like toast provided the Saints don't hit some kinda homerun by somehow shoring up our front seven.

We signed Jeff Blake around 12:05AM the day free agency began. This isn't new territory.

I agree. You have to overspend to get anything in free agency. That is how the league is today, and it will only get worse.

Caution? What caution? The Saints have been way too cautious for over 40 years. Yes, throw caution to the wind. We have NO cornerbacks right now that are legit starters in this league. Let's get one, draft another, sign another ... whatever .. we need corners badly.

Was there a press release somewhere stating that the Saints would not shore up their front seven? Is there a new rule that says that once a team signs a cornerback that they cannot sign a front seven player or pick a few in the draft? Has Mickey Loomis gone on radio saying "Asante Samuel" will solve all of our defensive problems?

I nor the Saints are naive enough to think that Samuel will solve all defensive problems. Like I said, I was initially against it but feel that it is a positive that they are going out to address an OBVIOUS weakness on defense. If we stick to your philosphy, I guess we would stick with Jason David next year.

Many posters questioning this move will be the first ones complaining when Jason David is burned repeatedly next season (if Samuel is not acquired).

Really great safety play will hide some deficiencies at the CB spot. If you have problems at the CB position it can sometimes indicate that other areas of the D are leaving the CB vulnerable. If teams can run on you because your LB's have to deal with OG's getting on them too often then you might see signs of that by a CB biting on the play action fake. If the opposing QB has time to look to the 3rd and 4th option because there's not much pressure generated from the front 4 then you might see CB's in coverage way down in safety territory. I suppose that most teams don't prefer to have their CB's making tackles 30 yards from the line of scrimmage. I want us to upgrade the CB position as much as the next guy but 1 player doesn't seem like the end all when it comes to improving on those 32 TD passes allowed.

No but if the Saints drop all their eggs in one basket that means that there is a dang good chance low to middle tier free agents will be brought in along the front seven. That is what has killed this defense for years. Plug the middle tier free agents in the secondary not along the front seven. BTW I think JD will play lights out for this team this upcoming season.

This is what I see happening. Loomis and company are aggressively targeting defensive needs. Obviously, there are many needs on defense, including the secondary. By aggressively pursuing Samuel, they are addressing one of their needs. They will likely target a middle tier free agent to fill another defensive need.

The draft, particularly the first 3 rounds will be utilized to grab the best available defensive players. Rounds 1 through 3 may consist of a a couple of defensive lineman and a LB. My guess is that they snag the best available linebacker with the 2nd pick.

I disagree that David will play lights out next season.

Just to add to what longtime lurker reported about what Gil Brandt said, Gil also said that we really want to upgrade the MLB position. Not earth-shattering news since we targeted Thomas and Morgan, but I felt like ya'll would like to know he said that too. Especially since Brandt heard it straight from Gibbs and Vitt.
