Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (1 Viewer)

BTW I think JD will play lights out for this team this upcoming season.

Strangely enough... so do I. I am an optimistic person, but also believe in redemption. In this case not in a religious way, but in a guy proving nayesayers wrong and in a guy that wants to prove his worth. In David I see nothing but integrity and class. I'm pretty sure that nobody is more distressed with David's play and stature at this level (especially with so much riding on his prize FA status) than David is. David has much to prove and much to ammend. All 5'8" of him will be trying to make last year to be a fluke. IMO

No but if the Saints drop all their eggs in one basket that means that there is a dang good chance low to middle tier free agents will be brought in along the front seven. That is what has killed this defense for years. Plug the middle tier free agents in the secondary not along the front seven. BTW I think JD will play lights out for this team this upcoming season.

So you think a proven player in Samuel will be a bust, yet you think a bust of a player in David will play lights out..............?

No matter if that happens or not next year, the reasoning you are using has made me rethink the legitimacy of your recent posts.

What makes you think Samuel will bust here?

I approve this post.

This is what I see happening. Loomis and company are aggressively targeting defensive needs. Obviously, there are many needs on defense, including the secondary. By aggressively pursuing Samuel, they are addressing one of their needs. They will likely target a middle tier free agent to fill another defensive need.

The draft, particularly the first 3 rounds will be utilized to grab the best available defensive players. Rounds 1 through 3 may consist of a a couple of defensive lineman and a LB. My guess is that they snag the best available linebacker with the 2nd pick.

I disagree that David will play lights out next season.

I completely agree with your past few posts, rjackson. I liked to add that adding a top teir free agent may create a domino effect this offseason brining more quality players.

Also, like one poster said before, we have been plugging mid teir free agents for years and have amounted to 2 playoff victories in 40 years. One of those victories happed to coincide with the signing of a top teir free agent, Brees. I say "let caution to the wind" and upgrade as many positions as we can even if it may cause monetary problems in the future. I WANT A SUPERBOWL WIN BEFORE I DIE.

This is the most talented team we have had in a longtime and who knows when is the next time we will be able to congregate this much talent. I say lets do this...

You have to remember that free agency and the draft go together like fish and chips (trying to get up for the London "home" game). You get an FA who fills a need, and that frees you up to draft differently. For example, getting Brees in free agency freed the Saints to not waste a first round pick on a QB. So, if the Saints go after Samuels, you have to think that means they have their eye on a LB or a DT in the draft. If they can get Samuels, then a top lineman with the No 1, then a CB or LB in round 2, they have come a long way.

You gotta have a little trust. Sean Payton will go after the FAs that give the Saints the most leverage in the draft. That's how the system works.

its possible, i mean its not like Meachem cant play, its that he hasnt played...you have to go into the season with some type of plan and they have seen more of him than any of us have, most teams go into the season with some type of question mark, and the productivity of Robert Meachem was gonna be the Saints whether he started or not.

You mis-read my post. The problem is that the poster who typed the alleged "inside info" gave Meachem's status as "the 3rd receiver" as if that if the coaching staff has already decided. Seriously?

Furthermore, how would it already be a known fact that our FO is planning on trading down for Rivers or Connor? It's late February. Come on.

You took my message out of context, I stated in my post that unless the front seven is shored up it isn't going to matter who is playing CB. Don't believe me just ask the Denver Bronco's or the 49ers. Samuel has only been "proven" in the Patriots defensive scheme. He isn't superman as he proved in the superbowl. My comment about Jason David had absolutely nothing to do Samuel.

We signed Jeff Blake around 12:05AM the day free agency began. This isn't new territory.

This myth has reached Urban Legend status. :hihi:

The man signed quickly but it wasn't like 12:01am like everyone tries to imply.

I won't be mad or upset if we do get him. I think we'll regret it and I think his play will never begin to match his salary. A few years down the road his contract will haunt us, but whatever. I'll root for him anyway.

Good post and I concur with you. Signing a top tier free agent does not preclude the Saints from upgrading the defense through additional free agents and the draft. The offseason will not end with the signing of Asante Samuel.

Not that I don't think having him on our team would be an upgrade, but wouldn't it be nice if we could find the same success with a player from a small school who didn't have a high draft pick status coming into the league? I sure wish we could have something like what happened with Evans happen with Usama. BTW... Eli hoisted that Lombardi Trophy thanks, in part, to a huge gift from Assante.

Samuel attended the University of Central Florida, and finished his career with 127 tackles (102 solo, 25 assisted), 8 interceptions, and a school-record 38 passes deflected (the previous record was 34 deflections). Samuel also returned 63 punts for 673 yards, for an average of 10.7 yards per return[2]. He majored in Business.

[edit] NFL career
In the fourth round of the 2003 NFL draft, with the 120th overall pick, Samuel was drafted by the Patriots

Yep, Asante and MM were not 1st round picks...or even 2nd round picks....it would be great if we could take this aggressive (knock on wood) approach to FA and then repeat our success in the 06 draft.
