Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (2 Viewers)

His name is Asante Samuel, not Samuels. That is more annoying Meechem, Meechim or Mitchum. Sorry I had to vent.

This quote from the Pats message boards makes me feel a lot better if this is true:

A lot of Saints fans seem to be under the impression that Asante is a cover 2 corner

Seems to me they think he's more of a lock down cover corner.

The world isn't divided between Cover-2 CBs and "lockdown cover corners"

Who will, best case scenario, be at significantly less than 100% IF he is able to start the season. I'm still thinking that if Ellis or Dorsey aren't around at #10, we should take DRC. I'm not sold on Rivers, and I'd hate to see them "reach" for him just to fill a need at LB. With MM's particular injury, combined with the fact that he's 32 years old, Samuel will only take care of one side, which means we'll still be very vulnerable on the other side. I'm a big fan of the mindset that if your front 4 are strong, your secondary is automatically better, but there's also a HUGE dropoff from Samuel to the other healthy corners we have....MM is a good corner, and it didn't help us with the other corner being so weak. Even with Samuel, assuming this is true, and assuming one of the stud DL's are gone, I'd still go with DRC at #10. Otherwise, IMO, the money on Samuel is wasted with the glaring hole still there on the other side, and we haven't really changed much since last year....all we've really done is replace MM with Samuel.
I meant before the injury. The original poster had said he has been wishing for a top CB for almost 20 years. I was just letting him know that we had one for the past couple of years. If and when MM gets healthy, there shouldn't be a dropoff on the other side. Plus, I expect Jason David to be much improved this year.

john 1 29...hopefully that didn't have any effect. I'm thinkin Asante is just really good at what he does. I can't tell ya'll how excited I am reading each post! I remember joking with my friends about landing him and if we do...man...there's no telling what kind of celebration moves I'll be bustin out.

hope you're right dude ..... seriously

OH MY GOD - I think I've found BlackNGold4877. He is "PatsSox363804" on that thread!!

By the way, I think DRC learning behind Asante could have us set at CB for years....

We could go into next season with

Asante Samuel
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
Usama Young
Jason David
Jason Craft

and Mike McKenzie on the PUP for 6 weeks.

Either way, physically I don't see why he can't do most anything. I'm not sure he's worth $100 million as a press-man CB though, his strength clearly seems to be facing the QB playing the ball.

If we end up signing Samuel, I'd expect Gibbs to really start paying attention to how New England used Samuel and make those adjustments to get the most out of him. You don't spend $10 mil a year on a player and try to fit him into what you're already doing. If this signing happens, I expect to see Samuel become our cornerstone defensive player.

If true.....sigh. I just feel $100 million dollar corners shouldn't drop game ending ints in the Superbowl. Any db can be beat if there is no pass rush, I don't care how good he is.

Was it really that easy of an INT? IIRC, it wasn't a Josh Bullocks Special, a ball that hit him in the chest while he was all alone.

I can promise that if the Saints feel that DRC is the best available player at the 10th spot, they will pick him. The Saints do not reach for need in the draft, particularly early. The one time they did, they were burned bad.

Well he had his hands on it. I don't know how "easy" it was, it was a heck of a leap, especially to keep his feet in. Lots of CBs wouldn't have even got their hands on it. But he did, and you know the rule. So however "easy" it may have been he "should have" had the INT.

But it's not like he doesn't have a long history of big time INTs. You can cut him a little slack I think.
