Saints are 14.5 point underdogs to 9-7 Tampa (6 Viewers)

In week 9 the Saints lost to the Panthers,. Saints outgained the Panthers in passing: 230-166 and in running: 197-80. I think the defense lost that game.
Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not saying our defense is good. It is just has been an extra bad combination with our inept offense the past several weeks. I think we need to get the interior D-line a big beefy son of a gun so we can maybe, just maybe, stop the run. Our defense was good for years because we could stop the run.

Saints gave out too many contract extensions to ageing vets.
That's a byproduct of our salary cap management. It was cheaper for us to extend a guy we should cut. The hard part is that we could never be a "better to cut a guy a year too early than a year too late" team because of cap issues. Just like Carr. I like him but we all know he isn't the long term answer. But we're gonna keep him because we have to do cap shenanigans to get under the cap. That means we keep him a year longer than we want. Just like we're keeping Demario, Mathieu, Cam. They are serviceable but ideally you would move on from them and save money. But it will cost us to cut them and we can't afford it.

And that is why new leadership is needed in the front office. The cap mismanagement since Payton left has been completely negligent.

The cap mismanagement started prior to Payton leaving. Most of the contracts we’ve given out have been market value. Including Tyrann and Demario extension and Taysom extension.

Arguably the worst decision was signing Carr when you could have gotten that level of play from Baker Mayfield.

All the talk about Cam falling off a cliff appears to have been more due to his usage. So since 2022 only terrilble contract given out was Carr’s.

And it could be worse…we could be the Browns. I’d say not stooping as low as Cleveland to sign Watson was another show of restraint from Loomis post Payton.

True, the cap shenanigans preceded Payton's departure, but there was a method to the madness.
  • When it became untenable for Galette and Graham to remain on the team, they made a difficult decision that put themselves in cap hell for a couple of years to correct the mistakes of those contracts.
  • The late Brees years they were trying to get over the top to get one more Super Bowl.
  • And in 2021 after the COVID year they had to play games to field a team under the cap because for the first and only time ever it actually went down, and significantly, instead of going up.
Those were extraordinary circumstances, but since 2021, when Payton left, they've been continuing the cap games to no end, except to avoid having to make difficult decisions on aging players. Had they started to clean things up in 2022 we'd be in good shape cap wise by now. Instead, I think the team is in the worst position it's been in decades. Someone needs to be held accountable for that.

So $28 mil guaranteed to Cam, who we all knew is slowing down, wasn't a bad contract. Come on, I love the guy too, but a bad contract is a bad contract.

He’s the 22nd highest paid DE.
Granderson is Tied for 8th w/ Von Miller.

So, bad timing sure…horrible contract like he’s being well overpaid. Nope

We will agree to disagree, but for me that's a lot for his age. I don't care where it's ranked. Just my opinion for the output

I don’t disagree, it’s just not a horrible contract and I think it looks horrible because we tried to rush him at DT all year.

The moment Bryan Young was moved to DE coach and his interior rush was reduced he’s had a sack in almost each game.

DA/Grantham played him a bit. He lost weight to be an edge guy then in camp he was told to gain weight and rush from the interior.

I think if you have him drop weight, take away his run defense snaps and let him be a 3rd down only rusher like the Ravens did for Suggs or Falcons John Abraham in the twilight of their careers you could get more value out of his contract.

I don’t care what you do w/ Carr he’s probably not going to play up to the money he’s being payed.

I agree on Carr. We will never get what we paid for him. He's a good guy, just not worth the money they are paying him.

Can't win without an offense starter at any position. No QB, No RB, No WR, No TE.

So while I do agree that the Defense is not great right now, they may be better if they weren't on the field for 3/4 of the game. The offense can't get a drive going. So when your defense is old, they will definitely get tired and slower as the game goes on. But this offseason will be so much fun because we can evaluate EVERY position because every position is a need and a must.
We also sucked when we had all those players healthy. That dismal loss to Carolina we had Carr, AK, Juan and Taysom. Sure no team can win without its starters but the Saints can't do much better with them.

The Saints are not the only team dealing with injury. The Lion have been hit hard still find ways to win. The Bucs are not that far off from the Saints when dealing with inury. and will likely win the division.

Sure there is maybe a branching universe where the Saints never get hurt and muster 9-10 wins, but can we stop pretending like injuries are the only reason why this team sucks so bad.
