Article Saints Execs love Spencer Rattler per ESPN’s Matt Miller (74 Viewers)

Why do so many talk about Rattler more than Haener. During the offseason didn’t Haener beat out Rattler to be the number 2? If someone believes Rattler could be a starter they must also think the same for Haener in addition they both earned the same amount of wins last season. I think the best option is to move on from both.

Because Haener has had two years in the NFL and has shown that he is not as good as Rattler. Haener got a start and was so bad that he had to be replaced by Rattler. It's very clear who the better QB is.

Most saw they Rattler out played Haener in the preseason. He led them to more points in the preseason. Haener didn't have a td drive during the preseason. DA didn't have the testicular fortitude to name him the backup. It was a thread about how DA needs to name him as the back up. It has been talked about often that the coaching staff felt Haener was more like Carr than Rattler and that is why he was the gameday number 2. Much like the year Taysom was the backup QB but Winston was gameday 2, but if Drew was to get hurt Taysom would start, which he did.

But during trading camp and practices the coaches chose Haener over Rattler as the number 2. So apparently it wasn’t clear.

No they didn't. The coaches always said that they were both #2 and refused to name a backup QB. Haener was active on gameday because he was the most like Carr and could execute a game plan designed for Carr. But, when it was time to start a game and design an offense around a QB, they started Rattler. And after all that, Haener got a start and was terrible. Rattler came in after him and he was much better and continued to improve for the rest of the season. Rattler has a long way to go, but he is much better than Haener.

I think that was a draft/experience bias more than anything.

You may be correct, but my point is that Rattler didn’t wow anyone at training camp. Most people I heard from thought Haener was better of the two. I just think we need to bring in some other young talent with potential that can push Carr. I don’t believe either Haener or Rattler can do that, maybe in a couple years, but not where they are now.

You make my point Rattler didn’t show he was better than Haener, doesn’t that tell you anything. I know you are pulling for Rattler, and so am I, but I don’t see that he has the talent or potential to be viable NFL starter. I hope I am wrong. But the new coach needs to have a plan in place if Rattler turns out to be the player I think he is.

If you think Rattler didn't wow anyone in training camp then you weren't paying attention to reports out of training camp. Who said that Haener was better than Rattler in camp?

What part of what I wrote shows that Rattler isn't better than Haener? Giving Rattler the starts over Haener shows he is better. Rattler replacing Haener and then starting the rest of the year shows he is better than Haener. And frankly, all you had to do was watch them play and you can tell that Rattler is better than Haener.

I'm not pulling for anyone in particular but you certainly appear to be pulling against Rattler. I just want a good QB, I don't care if it's Haener, Carr, Rattler or someone else. You just seem to have this weirdly dim view of Rattler and refuse to see any of the upside in his game.

In the end, it's clear after two years that Haener is not a starting caliber NFL QB. Carr is a starting caliber QB, but he's reached his peak and his peak is mediocre starter. And at his age, he is likely to decline from that soon. Rattler showed some promise last year but needs a lot of work. The only way he is going to get that work so that we can find out if he is any good is if he gets starts this year. Otherwise we go into the 2026 draft being forced to draft a QB or having to spend money on a new QB after letting Carr go.

Cut Carr and develop Rattler. Why? Because he's cheap and talented. Maybe we have something, maybe we don't. If we don't, draft a potential franchise QB high in 26 draft. Next year is a wash anyway. Don't sign any high priced vets, and draft like you've never drafted before. Use 2025 to cut costs and rebuild.

The deep ball issues have nothing to do with lack of arm strength. They are caused by his lack of time practicing with the MASH unit of WRs that we put on the field when Rattler was playing. He had no time to get timing down with those guys because DA ran practices at half speed and they weren't even here during training camp.
You're absolutely right.

I'll add that lack of time to make his reads (even Peyton Manning was slow his rookie year) and having no pocket to step up in, both also contributed to his inability to make consistent long throws.

Too small, not enough arm talent.
Same knock on Brees initially (definitely not saying Haener is another Brees) but is likely the most intellectually capable of the 3 in our QB room.

Before I toss Haener out with the bath water, I'd like to see him play with a decent OL and WR's. Just like Rattler (although I see more raw talent in Rattler) to really judge the man I need to see him play with at least a modicum of talent around him.
