Just about every draft projection from that draft had Penning as our pick.Sure, but it seems clear that whoever scouted Penning either didn't do a good enough job scouting him or failed to convey to Loomis how not ready he was. Maybe Loomis went rouge a bit, but I find it hard to believe if they said we have a 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th round grade on this guy, he would have taken him that high in the first. It contradicts everything Loomis and Ireland have said about trusting your board and the grades the scouts gave them. Maybe the scouts said he has a late first or even a mid-2nd grade but I would be shocked to find out that the scouts told Loomis his grade was lower than that and he took him anyway.
