Saints losing College Scouting Director to the Broncos for a personnel VP role (1 Viewer)

What's your source for that allegation?
One of the local writers (can’t remember which one) suggested that Loomis overrode the scouts on that one, that they said to not take Penning in the 1st.

Well.. bear in mind that anything that I've posted within this thread are just things that I've been told, and I am not 100% that it's all accurate. or even that I remember it all verbatim, like the thing about Ireland may have been another person in the organization making the recommendation against drafting Penning, which is fuzzy in my memory because it was a couple years ago. I can say that I personally believe what I have been told to be true, for the most part, due to the sources track record, but don't take it to the bank. I mean, it's hearsay.

Ireland was also against drafting him lol.

Penning, Davenport, Turner, Ruiz (took 3 years to be descent but not great), Foskey (got more from Granderson as a UDFA rookie than him). That's not a good hit rate. You could make the argument that with the exception of Ruiz, that if any of those picks played like you would expect for a high round draft pick, that the Saint might still be in the playoffs even if everything else was the same.

Ireland is definitely not terrible. But the scouting over the last several years has definitely held this team back and will continue to do so till it gets better, no matter who the HC is.

A lot of people on here use MSU as their source.

COVID year... I will pass, because it extremely disruptive to the Saints draft process. Which is pretty thorough.

Davenport and Turner was Dennis's prototype edges. So, I really don't know where the egg or the chicken is on that if Dennis lobby for his type of edge and that what's Ireland compile.

All that Ireland really does is get his scouts to write up reports and create a draft board. He doesn't make the pick.

Plus, we have to be in perspective of draft slots and quality of draft. Which weren't great and extremely chaotic. Getting Paulson Adebo in the 3rd round would never happen under Normal conditions.

I know that this sounds like excuses, but we did have a couple of years of irregular drafts.

Scout teams typically present the decision makers with options, players that hit their desired metrics (both physically and mentally).....and there is a rumor that Penning was a Loomis decision, that he hand picked him....not saying it's definitely the case but I tend to believe it.....
Ok late in 2021, PFN Chief Draft Analyst Tony Pauline reported that some scouts already had Penning rated as the top tackle in the class. https://www.profootballnetwork.com/...-trevor-penning-be-ot1-in-the-2022-nfl-draft/

So it's not like the Saints were the only team that thought Penning would pan out many other did also. But it's still early with him. You never know.

Some of yall talking like he was the one making the picks or leading the scout team. Notice only he was taken, he probably was our best one.
