Saints losing College Scouting Director to the Broncos for a personnel VP role (2 Viewers)

Same scout team that brought us Penning?

Scout teams typically present the decision makers with options, players that hit their desired metrics (both physically and mentally).....and there is a rumor that Penning was a Loomis decision, that he hand picked him....not saying it's definitely the case but I tend to believe it.....

Scouting team didn't want to draft Penning.

Didn't know.

I know nothing at all about this guy, but I'm sure "he wasn't that good anyway" or something. I do still find it troubling that we seem to have an easier time losing guys than bringing guys in. Little by little the culture that we were trying to preserve with the guys that are in the building whittles away.

I'm not really worried about losing the current scouts. The draft evaluation has been atrocious. It's why we are where we are. How do you give Foskey a high 2nd round grade when he did nothing all week at the Senior Bowl practices?

Might not be a bad thing. We've had some hits, but quite a few misses lately. If we are going in a different direction on offense, having a different set of eyes looking for the talent could be a positive.

You hate to lose a guy who is apparently a good young scout, but that's the price of having good people in your organization. And they have continued to develop these guys over the years in the front office so I expect they will have someone to promote or bring in new blood. But, I have to say that people are not surprisingly way overreacting to the loss of an Assistant College Scouting Director that the vast majority of us had never heard of before today.

And frankly, at least Payton hasn't come for Ireland. I guess it could still come, but he hasn't moved for him yet. And, yes, I know they have had issues with several first round picks under Ireland, but they have actually been good after the 1st round and in the later rounds where the team has to rely more on the scouts due to the number of players in each draft.

Speaking of, I saw it asserted on another Saints board that Sean had mentally checked out his last couple of seasons here…that he barely spent an hour a day at the facility. This was presented as insider info, hard for me to believe, but I wasn’t there…..
No way I’ll ever believe that.

Sure, but it seems clear that whoever scouted Penning either didn't do a good enough job scouting him or failed to convey to Loomis how not ready he was. Maybe Loomis went rouge a bit, but I find it hard to believe if they said we have a 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th round grade on this guy, he would have taken him that high in the first. It contradicts everything Loomis and Ireland have said about trusting your board and the grades the scouts gave them. Maybe the scouts said he has a late first or even a mid-2nd grade but I would be shocked to find out that the scouts told Loomis his grade was lower than that and he took him anyway.
