Saints sign Chase Young to 1-year deal up to 13M (2.7M base, 1.86M signing, 450K workout, 7.99M total gameday roster bonus) (1 Viewer)

Considering his ceiling, $13 million for a one year prove it deal is actually pretty reasonable. That's what Davenport and Granderson made last season. Right around 25th in '24 season salary for edge rushers.

And I've been a critic of his since his second season with the Commanders. He actually had a decent rookie season, but hasn't really lived up to the hype since.
This is pretty much the best way to look at it. If it’s anything other than a rookie, you’re gonna have to pay for a pass rush no matter where it comes from: DE, OLB, DT. DE is also where we need the most help, and idk who else we could’ve or should’ve drafted that wouldn’t have broken the bank.

Considering a handful of OLBs and DTs with higher contracts (didn’t do any research just assuming 5-10 exist), I think it’s fair to say he is around to 30-35th highest paid pass rusher.

His ceiling is top 10, and it’s in a one year deal, so I think it’s fair to say that we are not overspending by much if at all bc I think most would consider him to be a top 40 pass rusher in the league.

Give a smart and lazy guy with all the talent in the world one year to make generational wealth, and more often than not I’d bet one them getting it done barring injury. Mix in a little pride being hurt after being the #2 overall pick and just missing out on a Lombardi, and I’m more than happy w this pick.

49ers could’ve kept him for basically the same money that they paid to Floyd… but they chose Floyd, and let Young walk.
🤔

Would you rather play (for the same money) for a team that just went to the Superbowl and likely will be in the mix to do so again next year?…

Or..

…a laughing stock that just choked away the easiest schedule ever and has the worst head coach in the entire league???
Would you( on a prove it deal) go against the NFC South or the NFC West? Not complicated

Can’t complain about this. Not overly expensive for a guy that managed 7.5 sacks last year at at the least is talented and hopefully more motivated than he’s been. Heck, Davenport got 10.5 and he’s produced a whopping 2.5 sacks over 2 years. It’s just the market.

Will it work, possibly. If it doesn’t nothing lost. Was I the biggest fan, no but he’s about the best scenario we could’ve hoped for with the cap space we had. Would I rather Danielle Hunter, most definitely yes but the saints didn’t have 25 million a year to give him.

Good deal for both sides. Young has little incentive to sign for additional years unless they include guaranteed dollars, and the Saints have little incentive to guarantee anything beyond this year without seeing that he can play and stay healthy. As others have said, the guarantee for this year is pretty much irrelevant unless this thing goes completely off the rails prior to the start of the season.

If he’s as good as all of the sunshine pumpers around here would have you believe…

…why is he signing a 1 year “prove it” deal?

I really have surprised myself with how indifferent and blah-blah-blah Dennis Allen has made me about this team.

Just can never tell about players and how they fit with a team. Look at Winston....prior to him being a saint I think most on here didn't have many positive things to say about him. By the time he left I think most would say he had a positive impact on our whole organization.
Yeah , off the field

I’m confused as to why we’re mad at this contract? They created the cap space this year to sign an edge rusher, it was always gonna happen the question was just who. He’s the best (+ youngest with the most upside) left on the market and the others that were better were either franchise tagged, resigned with their teams, or commanded much more than we could pay (Hunter @ 2 years $49 mil, Huff 3 years/$51 mil, Greenard with $48 mill guaranteed etc). I guess you could say maybe Clowney would be less money but he’s not for sure better and doesn’t come with the added bonus of getting a head start on signing a young DE with tremendous potential to a multiyear contract should he excel here. And if he doesnt excel here then coolio, $13 mil gone from Gayle’s wallet and off of the books since this contract doesn’t affect the cap next year unless they bring him back. And If they DO bring him back then that means he was effective this year…which is a good thing. Plus the one year deal also means we’re not precluded from drafting someone this year as well. I’m failing to see the problem with this.

I would say Penning is absolutely in the plans. He was never going to develop super fast per his pre-draft profile and he's a better fit in this system.
And with Marrone as OL coach if he developed it would have been on his own . Notice that Marrone was NOT hired to be OL coach somewhere else just an offensive consultant

Based on losing our emergency LT Landon Young and him still not getting PT lol. Say whatever you want about next year but last year Penning was the equivalent of Kadarius Toney by week 4
Look beneath the surface and you'll find the answer to Penning's issues

Because “know it all arm-chair GM’s” on this forum are better equipped to shoot this signing down based on their insider info. This is a no brainer, win-win for US.

Who's sunshine pumping? Most are saying they're not expecting much but also acknowledge that his ceiling is as high as it gets for what he's getting paid. I'd hardly call that sunshine pumping.

I get the skepticism and disillusionment with Allen and the team. Been there and done that. But I've moved on and will try to call a spade a spade on everything else. The moves this offseason, I can't really complain much about. Better than I expected tbh.
