Saints will interview Vikings DBs coach Daronte Jones for Defensive Coordinator [on February 15] (2 Viewers)

At his age, 3-4 might fit a guy like Cam Jordan better. The job of outside containment shifts a bit more toward the LB’s. If Cam plays on the outside of the DL, he could potentially be effective for another season or two. I’d really like to see him retire as a Saint.
Cam’s been playing a lot of standup, he even showed up to camp lighter to get the most out of his body. Having him put weight back on into the 290’s range is only going to compound the loss of explosiveness.

Let him play Strong side LB where he can wash TE’s in run defense and then split passrush snaps w/ another young player

Allen threw him a curve ball w/ the 3tech role.

Jordan is experimenting with playing at a lighter weight. In a typical season, Jordan said he usually plays between 288-290 pounds. He showed up for training camp 14 pounds under that number this season — just in time to shift inside with the big boys.

“The wrong time, huh?” Jordan said.

I hope Daronte Jones is the guy and we can get Staley for assistance HC/Linebackers.

By all things I’ve read Staley is a detailed guy, but that detail leads to things being over complicated. Can’t see the forest for the trees kinda guy. He’s be the details guy to Kellen’s big picture, but I’d absolutely cry if he ends up as DC.

Jones being a secondary guy just feels right and Staley can help tie the fronts to the coverage (it was his secondary that failed as Chargers HC)

Maybe LB coach/Run game coordinator. Or Assistant HC/Run game coordinator
Schemes are built back to front these days, defenses want to limit explosive pass plays first and fit the run second. It’s one reason teams love nickel, they would rather a 7th guy in coverage versus a 5th guy on the LOS.

I would agree with picking a DC with a DB background to make sure we are designing and teaching sound coverage schemes. Stopping the run will come down to getting better talent on the field, if we have to commit extra resources to the run then we’re just asking to get crushed by the big play.

I agree, in that article they point out that the Chargers defense was excellent in getting teams to 3rd and long. I’ve read other articles that proved he can shut down a teams run game w/ best of them.

A 66% conversion rate on 3rd downs in passing league is damning. So it’s either his secondary coach was trash or he couldn’t mesh the concepts well enough. Since he was HC and in charge of building that D how he wanted it, I’m leaning towards the issue being him.

I’d love to be wrong but it’s proof why most DCs are former secondary coaches in some capacity and we know Staley is a LB coach by trade

Agree with you again, no way I move Cam inside. He has played his best out on the edge, and can be just as disruptive as an SLB in any personnel grouping. He wouldn’t be expected to play coverage or anything, he would just be an edge like he has always been.

I had put down Derrick Ansley as a candidate because he was DC with the Chargers when Moore was there and has a DB background. But I have to wonder, how much of those coverage breakdowns were Staley and how many were Ansley? That said, the Packers liked him enough to make him their defensive pass game coordinator. They improved from 26th to 9th in pass defense DVOA.

I didn’t realize he had slimmed down. I wouldn’t mind seeing him try OLB. That said, my point was for him to play less DT. In years past, he was a swing player, moving inside in some packages. I think he’s a big to old for that these days.

Points back to Staley. I really like him as a voice for LB’s. I like his energy and demeanor. I wouldn’t say he’s a fiery coach, but he’s energetic and praises a lot. Below is a mic’s up training camp.

I had a friend who explained to me business and hierarchy. He said all businesses have 3 figure heads.

The a**hole or harda**, the mediator, and the pushover. Kellen strikes me as a mediator. I point back to Sirianni scolding AJ Brown for something in the SB and Kellen came back and got him the ball on the next series. It kept him engaged.

Who’s the hard*** on the staff? Or who’s the guy who will scold guys? Even Kellen admitted that’s secondary to his nature, he’d prefer a calm approach and then if necessary his approach changes but it would be easier for him to have that guy on staff that’s not afraid to chew guys out so he doesn’t have to.

I'm not sure they'd release a video that made him look bad, but I did like what I saw there. The DBs were running into each other and getting burned a few times though.

No idea what kind of scheme he would run, if he brings over Flores’ scheme though that’s a heavy blitzing 3-4

Kellen spoke about taking advantage of the dome/crowd. The Vikings/Flores scheme crowds the LOS on 3rd down, and they play Zone.

This is importantly because crowd noise can effect a defense as much as it does an offense. Especially if that defense has a lot of rules. Send one guy in motion and if the communication isn’t proper then entire thing breaks down. That in theory happens more often when a defense is in man coverage on those pivotal downs.

Sudden a shift can cause confusion and the advantage is no longer in the defenses hands. Playing Zone on those critical downs should help that since motioning vs zone doesn’t cause the defense to chance much.

They identify the new #2 or 3 and everyone adjust based on their coverage principles, like “banjo”

This type of scheme should take advantage of our crowd far easier and our offense should travel better.

There’s a hard knocks video of Aaron Glenn absolutely shredding a classroom verbally and yes the coaching points and his energy don’t seem conducive to a DB room. It’s a small clip though so I’m reaching but I see him as having a more excitable energy than Kellen on the surface and I think that’s a good thing for an assistant HC. Allows for some contrast

We don't have the pieces for any kind of decent defense now so all of it has to be rebuilt anyway. The only DEs we have under contract are Foskey and Granderson. Maybe Kpassignol too but I'm not sure. So we have to rebuild anyway and the defenses that have been stopping modern NFL offenses are 3-4 or 3-4 hybrids that use B gap pressure with a 2 high shell over the top. Plus LBs are cheap and easy to acquire and are usually great value in the draft.

Plus Breese and Cam work as 3-4 DEs and the idea is to be multiple not just run a 3-4.

It has nothing to do with the Dome Patrol days.
Exactly! We don’t have the talent or pieces for 4-3 or 3-4 so it doesn’t really matter where we start from.
