Spencer Rattler’s first start was… (1 Viewer)

Olave getting concussed early on didn’t help either. It made shaheed his primary read. Football is like a boxing match. The fighters trade blows until one of them weakens then the other starts doubling up blows until the other submits. Our offenses inability to trade blows, allowed our defense to eventually get pummeled. So you can’t completely blame the D for letting it get out of control. The offense needed to contribute.

It looked clear that Rattler had some chemistry with Means that he did not have with Shaheed. That's going to take time and some reps in practice.

Yeah. Shaheed earns his money on deep routes and it takes time and reps for a young QB to get his feel and timing for those throws. Rattler was close on what could have been some big plays.

Mistakes were expected but I thought he handled himself and the game well.

I don't buy it. Just looking at that last real drive in the 4th quarter, he had Shaheed wide open in front of him on 2nd down. Then on the 3rd down roll-out, he's got a WR streaking as his first read. He threw it over the top out of bounds to Shaheed instead.

If it wasn't a single read, he wasn't doing it today. Could he get better? Sure. Could he not? Sure. We have no idea after this game.

We have an idea that he has the talent and that the game isn't too big for him. And there is no guarantee that Carr makes any of those plays either. On the other hand Rattler did some things that Carr can't do and it's time to get him the experience to find out if he can learn to do those things and continue to do the things Carr can't do.

Yep. Far from perfect but I though he played well for a guy making his first NFL start against an aggressive Todd Bowles defense.

I agree overall, but the offense was doing enough to keep the game close until the defense stopped tackling and started giving up huge YAC on almost every play. The looked tired, but they had to do better than that. And just like I couldn't blame the Defense when they only gave up 12 and 15 points, I can't blame the offense when the defense gives up 51 points.

So as long as you ignore the bad things, sure, he played well.
What did you expect out of a guy in his first start playing behind a bad oline with no run support?

Yes, he did fine. He still had 2 ints which was disappointing, but overall, he was fine for a rookie.

I actually think it is great for him face adversity early because he can go look at film 🎥 and learn from each game.

If we allow him to play throughout this season, he will be ready next season.

He can get his timing down with Shaheed ans Olave this season.

Unfortunately, DA will try to save his job and go back with Carr.

Carr can do roll-outs with single and two-stacked reads. He's done many this season. I'm not sure why you guys are suggesting he can't.

Rattler wasn't out there scrambling like crazy and making guys miss. He had a few good scrambles up the middle for relatively short gains, but I did not see a guy who is going to win games with his athleticism. He's going to need to develop into a passer who can take advantage of his big arm.

pretty good. He made some good reads, delivered the ball well on most of his throws, and made some rookie mistakes, which is to be expected.

Anyone expecting him to come in and be an instant phenom doesn't understand the talent at the NFL level.

What really counts, though, is what he does this week in learning from the mistakes he made, building on the things he did well, and what adjustments he makes to the way he reads defenses and how he reads what his receivers are doing. The potential of him is about to be shown in the next couple of weeks.

I agree except that with a game on Thursday there isn't much time for him to fix anything or even for Kubiak to make more adjustments to help him. And the defense is already clearly tired and injured, which won't get better with another game in 4 1/2 days. Especially when it looked like the Defense gave up at the end of the game.

I liked what I saw. I think the coaching staff failed him by not trying to run the ball more in the second half.
