I didn't know that we currently have the 4th oldest roster in the NFL. This is really due to bad drafting in the early parts of the draft on our part. Guys like Payton Turner, Zach Baun, Adam trautman, and Marcus Davenport have all been busts, or injury riddled up to this point in their careers. 2 aren't even on the team anymore.

The problem is that the saints brain trust knows that some of these players they are drafting are either considered projects and shouldn't be 1st round picks, or that they are injury prone. Yet, they draft them anyway.

Then there's the problem of trading away draft capitol for just 1 player. It's always been a staple that you build a team through the draft with young talent. Then you supplement the rest of the team and it's holes through Free agency. But the saints do it bass ackwards. This usually brings the age numbers up, because you are signing older players.

What bothers me the most is that we have one of the best personnel evaluators in the NFL in Jeff Ireland. Mickey needs to start trusting him and let us start getting younger. And, we will probably need better coaches that are better teachers so that young talent can be developed.

Some of our players are soon going to start to decline and lose a step like:

Cam Jordan
Demario Davis
Tyrun Matthew
James Hurst

Others are going to start to succumb to their injuries as they begin to take a toll on them. Ram, Peat, Winston, Maye and others.

Don't get me wrong. I love this team and think that if things go our way, great things can happen this year. Especially with the schedule we have, and the weakness of our division. Maybe not winning the Superbowl, but getting to the NFC championship game. If the ball can bounce our way for a change, maybe even playing in the big game.

What do y'all think about the age of our roster.

I wouldn’t call Davenport a busy. Good player when he plays. Minn gave him a lot of money so he’s not a bum
He either had a half a sack, or 1 sack last year. He's oft injured. Yes, he picks up a lot of pressures, but @ some point those need to turn into sacks. Now, he is very good against the run, but @ the de spot, your job is to rush the passer. @ this, he's been a bust.

For what we gave up to jump up and pick him, Davenport was a colossal bust.

The picks we traded turned into Rashaad Penny, Micah Kiser and Deandre Baker. Two of those guys didn't even play in the league last year and the other guy has gone over 100+ carries in a season once.

He pretty much was directly responsible for most of Cam's sacks last year. QBs were avoiding Dav and running into Cam's arms. There was one play where Dav pursued a QB and the QB fell to the ground and Cam jumped on him for a sack.

Part of the all in strategy was quality over quantity in the draft. I remember hearing about how the Saints were so loaded that they didn't need 10 draft picks. They just needed a few instant impact players to help win now. Well quality over quantity is all well and good but by god you better nail the few picks you have early in the draft. That didn't happen.

The Saints being so loaded that they didn't need to keep their picks was a myth. The roster was never so stacked that they had no use for picks. They didn't have room for drafted players but they had plenty of room for undrafted free agents. Don't try to tell me you have no room for all your picks while your carrying Little Jordan Humphrey on the roster.

This is very true. When you miss on so many 1st round picks, especially when you keep trading up, it really hurts the team. And projects in that round is not a good way to go.

So what are the

Ok. So, there is a link in that article that leads to another article that lists average team age from 2018 to 2012. Saints average age in 2012: 26.5. Youngest (Browns) 25.0, middle of the pack 25.9 (Colts), oldest 27.1 (Bucs, so probably will be a bit lower in 2023 sans Brady).

I don't see a winning-team | age correlation on that table, and I don't think the age average difference is that significant.

And we don't know what the 2023 roster is going to look like. Surely Cam and DeMario will be a year older, but the Saints shaved 4 years off by switching from Dalton (born 1987) to Carr (born 1991).
