At a board meeting on Wednesday, Nissan decided to move on from the EV merger with Honda. The sudden change comes after Honda reportedly wanted more control over the partnership.

According to sources close to the matter, Nissan is now searching for new partners. Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida met with Honda’s head honcho on Thursday morning (via Financial Times), confirming plans to end merger talks.

Right now it’s Nissan. They’re on the verge of bankruptcy. Stellantis still has runway to right the ship.

Originally I think the plan was for Honda to be in charge, which might have worked. But these legacy companies are rapidly falling behind, and I don't know if any of them can pivot quickly enough to catch up to those Ev companies from China. They're already starting to lose noticeable market share in important markets

There is a bit of speculation that the Japanese government forced Honda into being open to a merger with Nissan. I'm thinking Honda potentially demanded Nissan become a subsidiary as a way of poisoning the entire thing. IMO Honda can make the argument that Nissan's current leadership isn't capable of turning the ship around and they needed Honda to get their act together.

Word now is Nissan is seeking to partner with a tech company to help it through a transformation. The problem there is the Nissan board is really too full of themselves to let a tech company really tell them what to do. IMO either the Japanese government will tell Nissan to 'bend the knee' to Honda or Nissan will be allowed to wither and die.

My power bill now tells me how much I'm spending on EV charging. I charge the i5 sedan and the plug-in minivan that we have and January is a long month for charging (31 days and cold temps). I'll have to go into my car apps to see how much charging I did, but I know that I charged the i5 at least four times and the van several times (it only gets 32 miles on a charge, and has gas so we don't always charge it).

According to the power bill, I paid $52 on EV charging in January.
