They've already said he's not a variant. He's just Victor von Doom.
They are missing some RDJ variants from The Sympathizer:Can you point me to where they said this? I didn't hear that, I just heard them say he's playing Victor Von Doom. I never heard them discuss variants at all.

When the Russo's announced him, they said he was playing Victor Von Doom but nothing about Tony Stark variants. People made assumptions. So let me issue a mea culpa here.
In the aftermath of the announcement there was information from an article from Daily Variety that was being misrepresented by posters on several subreddits and other outlets that made it sound like they had definitively said he was not a Stark variant. The article does not actually say this.
I don't have time (or really the inclination) to obsess over this stuff like I used to, and just kind of assimilated it as fact after seeing it claimed at several different places.
So there's still a possibility he could be a variant.
Which would make more sense but I still hate.

If this is true why wouldn't you want to keep it a secret so it's a huge surprise revealJeff Sneider is reporting that he got an email from a source on May 12 confirming that RDJ would be back, and that he'd be a Tony Stark from another universe who became Dr. Doom. He also says that this Doom will have a cameo at the end of F4.

Plus, Steven Caple Jr. is in talks to direct I Am Legend 2, but only after getting into an argument with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.www.theinsneider.com

Marvel rarely likes leaks and they will cut you in a bad way. Whoever leaked that, if it's legit, better not let them find out.If this is true why wouldn't you want to keep it a secret so it's a huge surprise reveal
The cameo at the end of the FF movie is obvious. That was my first thought when the Doomsday bit appeared.
However; I sure hope this "source" has no idea what he's talking about because I hate that. "Just chalk it up to the multiverse" is lazy writing IMHO. Keep Dr. Doom as himself. Crossing him into Tony Stark is a terrible idea to me, and weakens who he is significantly. There is absolutely ZERO reason to have any relation to Stark just because RDJ is playing the character. If he's "such a great actor," he should be able to bring us an entirely different character as Victor von Doom than the one he played as Tony Stark - and, again, there's absolutely no reason Doom should ever be seen without his mask, which, if RDJ does a good job of it, will help audiences not even think of the character as "Robert Downey, Jr." but simply as Dr. Doom.
Doom is the greatest villain Marvel ever invented; why would anyone think it's a good idea to change him? Don't water him down. Jack Kirby and Stan Lee are probably screaming "NO!" from their graves at the very mention of this.
This "source" is the guy that leaked RDJ being Doom 9 days prior to the reveal. I'm starting to think they announced it because we won't recognize him in the role, so they want us to know about it. They also supposedly had a comic book storyline where Dr. Doom became Iron Man as a tribute to Stark or something like that, so there is some crossover from the comics between the two.The cameo at the end of the FF movie is obvious. Not sure why. I think we'd all find out before the movie either way. This "source" is the guy that leaked RDJ being Doom 9 days prior to the reveal. I wouldn't be mad if Marvel gave him another chance. They've done so with a couple of other actors, while some others are still persona non grata. He forked up. I hope he learned his lesson, but he'll have to earn his way back. I really wanted to see more of what Kang could bring to the next phase of the saga. Not so sure that will happen in this phase though.Jonathan Majors reacts to Robert Downey Jr replacing him as next Marvel villain

I dunno...Even without his legal troubles Marvel needed some kind of spark. I don't think the whole Kang thing was cutting it. Granted, a lot of it was the writing, but something needed to change.I wouldn't be mad if Marvel gave him another chance.
