The next head coach is inheriting a mess (4 Viewers)

That’s why I’m also talking about patience. Do you mean specifically the next coach or in general?

I don’t know what Allen was told but I don’t think we can expect much over the next 2-3 years.
To me, patience IS time. A new coach is going to want 3 years minimum to complete the turnaround. He may even want some control over who’s contract gets kicked down the road.

I believe there’s some positives. You do have an owner and organization that will support a coach and give them time. Mrs B also isn’t a meddler.

The roster isn’t bad. There are good pieces here. A great draft or two and we could be stacked.

The division is up for grabs and no team is head and shoulders better. So the opportunity to compete for a division title right out of the gate is a possibility.

The fan base is patient and understanding

The only building blocks on defense that I see are Granderson, Bresee, Taylor, McKinstry and Werner. Jury is still out on a lot of the younger guys and odds don’t favor most of them panning out at a high level.

A number of guys are aging out, won’t be under contract, or have serious injury concerns on when they’ll be back and at what level.

OL might be a strength if they can ever stay healthy. RB is one deep unless Miller figures his availability and conditioning out. We have two talented WRs with injury concerns. Not much behind them, though Means looks like he has some developmental potential. I like our two young QBs but that’s entirely going off feeling.

We have some maybes and some guys who are good enough to be on an NFL roster.

I don’t know, it all looks really thin to me with not a lot of room to upgrade this roster anytime soon. Hitting at a higher rate and higher level on drafts and UDFAs would help a lot until more money frees up.

Sounds like you agree with me then.

Do you think someone is going to disagree? Bad cap, limited talent, questionable FO/ownership.
There is still an opinion that some have, that Allen was the root of the problem. They think that treating the symptom cures the disease. To think this roster was built to be a contender was nothing more than self delusion for them.

I honestly think that Rizzi will show that this roster isn’t as bad as we think it is. If the defense would actually tackle, would actively rush the qb and set the tone rather than the whatever Allen was having them do, the team improves quickly. I belive in our OL, we just need one more piece and health. TE I think is workable. Definitely need talent infusion at wr. But, a new attitude and challenge can make a lot of difference also. Let’s revisit this at the bye

I thought this was the case when the team was looking to replace Payton, too, and I’m not sure the circumstances are going to be much better. People will say there are only 32 of these jobs but I think top candidates are more selective than we ever hear about.

The QB room might be more attractive than it was then and while this isn’t looking like a strong QB draft, it doesn’t look 2020 bad.

The cap is going to be a problem and this isn’t a very talented or deep roster.

The organization will really have to sell itself and I also think, offer patience and stability to a new hire, knowing the conditions aren’t in place for a quick turnaround. A lot of good luck can change that but I think the team is going to have to set realistic expectations and be overly competitive on compensation and conditions.

Anybody feel better about it or see it differently?
I think you’re spot on.

The fact is…Payton would’ve never taken this job if GB had offered it to him instead of McCarthy.

I think the positive in all this is that the “best” candidate doesn’t always pan out and sometimes the “worst” hire in a cycle turns out to be pretty good. It’s all a crapshoot.

We need to get the QB right. I doubt we end up in a position to get Cam Ward, so maybe we just need to treat 2025 as a season to reset the cap and culture, whoever we hire. But that wouldn’t be the worst thing, imo

I have my ideas of who should be the next GM, but pointless to talk about until we know if Mickey would keep control.

The Saints have a very patient owner who is willing to spend A LOT of money to field a competitive football team. The kind of owner who will pay big money to a top HC prospect to offset the other deficiencies.

Dan Campbell turned Detroit into a winning team in just his second season, and he did it trading away his franchise QB for a struggling Jared Goff.

We all saw Sean Payton take a Brees-less Saints, decimated by injuries, and post a winning season in 2021.

Nail the Head Coach hire and it is shocking how quickly "dumpster fire" NFL teams turn into winners.
LOL I really don't think people know how little Campbell had to do with turning the Lions around. He truly is the Ed Ogeron of the NFL His best move was to elevate Johnson to OC and hire Glenn as DC. Other than that it's pretty much all their GM Holmes was the architect
from 2020 to 2024 the Lions from the Stafford trade and their own picks had 19 draft picks in the top 100 of the draft AND they got Goff. With that kind of draft capital it's pretty hard to not be in a position to excel. Also they had plenty of cap space.
People also forget that Goff stunk up the joint until Johnson was made OC
Yes Campbell gets his players to play hard , just like Ogeron did at LSU
But he did not build that team , Holmes did and it's Johnson that runs the O and Glenn that runs the D
If the Saints had Holmes as GM and that kind of draft capital and cap space even DA would be successful

I don't honestly think Kubiak is that good, but he was a sought after guy.

I mean sure all three of those jobs with either a pick to draft one of the two best QB prospects in years and the Chargers who had a good team and potential franchise QB were better jobs. But I don't think those types of opportunities are available this year unless a coach thinks Williams is going to be the guy.

But, that doesn't mean you can't get a good coach.
I disagree with you about KK. You don't take a team with a mediocre OL and really only 1 good RB and a limited WR room no real TE even with Taysom and put up 40 + in your 1st 2 games. KK did wonders with what he had in those 1st 2 games. And the only reason we didn't continue with maybe not that much but close to that success is we were DECIMATED by injuries on the O side of the ball
My trepidation about the new HC is that if he's from the O side of the ball he better be better than KK. If he's a D coach I hope he has the sense to retain KK

There might be some coaching candidates that think: "These guys were pretty damn good before the avalanche of injuries they faced this year.

That’s not fair to Campbell. He spent years learning from Payton after he didn’t get the full time HC job with the Dolphins.

They definitely have better personnel. But just dismissing the job DC has done isn’t fair.

It’s almost always the case that when a coach gets fired, the new coach is inheriting somewhat of a mess.
