The next head coach is inheriting a mess (2 Viewers)

Its definitely not an ideal landing spot, and the cap problems are real. On Moving the Chains today, Pat made a good point. Any new coach they bring in is going to want to shake up the roster because they don’t want to keep the players that got the last guy fired. Dead money will make it difficult to do that unless players that should retire will sign up for a Brees-like exit.

The next coach would need to be assured that year one is “do what you can with what you have”, and then they’ll give them some slack to overhaul the roster the following year(s) without judging them too heavily on early performance. I’m assuming Payton received similar assurance about his first year with Wilson, who pretty much weighed down the Broncos entire cap single-handedly.

Right, but there are degrees to that.

Payton talked about passing on the Raiders job before eventually landing with the Saints. It’s made me wonder how much that might actually happen. Taking the wrong job can really tarnish a coach’s marketability.

Entirely speculative but I never thought the Saints were in the running for McDaniel in 2020, even if they had interest. Would you agree there were some important differences in the attractiveness of those openings? Same with Jax and a coach getting to work with Lawrence (at the time) vs Winston-Hill-Book or drafting Pickett, Riddler etc.

Every job is different and it also depends on the candidates - is he from the area (or more importantly, is their spouse from the area), did he coach some of the players somewhere else, etc.

The Saints will definitely need to sell themselves. But I think the first thing they need to do is decide how they want to organize the team going forward. What’s Loomis’ role? Ireland? Does the new coach have any say in personnel - those decisions will shape the field as much as anything.

They will need to sell themselves but they need to decide what they are selling first.

Agreed.

I’m not making the argument the team can’t land a top coaching prospect, but rather how do they go about that and as you described, the team sorting out exactly what they have to sell.

Every next coach inherits a mess. That’s why the opportunity opened up. It’s a head coach role, who is going to admit they aren’t up to it?

We all understand that but it’s also true that every situation is unique.

I thought this was the case when the team was looking to replace Payton, too, and I’m not sure the circumstances are going to be much better. People will say there are only 32 of these jobs but I think top candidates are more selective than we ever hear about.

The QB room might be more attractive than it was then and while this isn’t looking like a strong QB draft, it doesn’t look 2020 bad.

The cap is going to be a problem and this isn’t a very talented or deep roster.

The organization will really have to sell itself and I also think, offer patience and stability to a new hire, knowing the conditions aren’t in place for a quick turnaround. A lot of good luck can change that but I think the team is going to have to set realistic expectations and be overly competitive on compensation and conditions.

Anybody feel better about it or see it differently?
I feel different if there is an IF, a big IF!

Before construction, there should be demolition.

This is a 5 year plan.

The first thing we need to do is get a young talented General Manager and sign him to a five year deal. He should be “married” in philosophy to a new head coach who also should get a 5 year deal.

The time of Loomis and his draft and cap philosophies have come and gone. He gave us a Superbowl and fun years, but we can’t expect different results doing the same.

The coach and GM should build based on the strength of each draft, building the trenches first and skill positions after. Only exception is if we can get a franchise QB to build around.

So I can be optimistic, if the right decisions are made, and forget the idea that we are close. We are not!

I saw Andy Reid accept the Chiefs job a month after the Belcher incident.

Obviously, some jobs are better than others. How good Klint actually is remains to be seen. No one says I'm going to take the most challenging job, if they can they look for the best chances for success. The Bears (1st pick), Commanders (2nd pick), and Chargers (Herbert) last year were all more attractive than this job currently.

I don't honestly think Kubiak is that good, but he was a sought after guy.

I mean sure all three of those jobs with either a pick to draft one of the two best QB prospects in years and the Chargers who had a good team and potential franchise QB were better jobs. But I don't think those types of opportunities are available this year unless a coach thinks Williams is going to be the guy.

But, that doesn't mean you can't get a good coach.

There’s a chance that if injuries heal correctly and we hit on one OL draft pick we could go from horrid line play to top quartile in 2025. And it starts with OL.

As long as it is stated in the beginning, I'm fine with that. 2-3 years to get out of the cap hole and rebuild the talent.

I don’t think it will be said in clear terms but I think it has to be understood. There’s not enough left for the team to stay on its current approach.

Yeah, this.

I don’t see Giants moving on from Daboll just yet, I believe they will give him another season.

Cowboys and Dolphins would be my wildcard, and if the Dolphins were dumb enough to fire McDaniels, we should jump on the phone with him immediately.

Maybe to all of that.

Not sure what Daboll has in favor but you might be right. He’s currently sitting at 2-7 and with about the same overall record as Allen accumulated in New Orleans.
