The Science of Fasting (5 Viewers)

So much conflicting info, hard to navigate for sure

You gotta be careful too... you watch too many youtube influencers and read too many studies you will start to believe that humans shouldn't eat anything at all. I have found the most health and happiness by eating things that are natural and don't come in a bag or box 90% of the time, but will indulge here and there. But as long as I am eating clean and avoiding highly processed foods it has done me wonders.

Welp, back on the 18/6 fast. The holiday pounds are not coming off easily, which is another reason I hate winter. I'd like to get back to 175 by April. According to the scale at work (it's a wheelchair scale they use to weigh the patients, and runs a few pounds heavy) I'm 193 fully clothed. Ugh.

I just started using the Simple app, so I'm wondering if any of you have experience with it?

You got this. I was at ~268 in December when my Doctor told me about my liver. I was down to 253/254 on 6 Jan when we left for the Philippines and maintained that for the 3 weeks there. After we got back on 26 Jan, I slowly trended down to 243.4-243.6 which has been the case for about 4-5 days straight, including this morning. I don't have a goal weight, but I haven't been 205 in about 20 years and I was in the 220-230 range for my 30s, but most of that was muscle mass. I think my goal is somewhere less than 220 which would allow me to carry some muscle mass, but get rid of the fat around my abdomen. In my daily 16/8 now and will probably attempt my first 48 hour fast starting tomorrow (last meal tonight).

I was back up to 260 this morning after staying around 248 for several of months towards the end of last year. Even went as low as 242 for a couple of days after a 40 hour fast. I woke up this morning with the intention of doing a two day fast (approximately 44 hours). I have been struggling to even hit my usual 18/6 or 20/4 fasts that I was doing effortlessly last year. If I can pull this off, I hope it will jump start me back to my consistent fasts and weight loss. So far I'm resisting the lunch temptation. I definitely feel, and see, the added weight.

I did 72 and ate. Back to 27 again and will be 30+ by dinner time. It's definitely much easier this second time hitting 24 hrs. Feels like it went quicker.

Damn...y'all got fat.

(ducks and runs)
Per the wonders of fasting and shedding the water weight - lost 6 lbs between yesterday morning and this morning. It ain't real, but it's a great psychological boost.

About to break a 44 hour fast. Was a little tough yesterday, but today was good.

Gearing up for a few longer fasts in next couple of weeks.
I haven't had any alcohol since NYE, which really makes everything with diet/fasting easier.
Been just eating between 1pm-6pm for the past week. Usually just nuts at 1pm, then fruit/veggie blend juice and a banana around 3pm and a decent dinner at 6pm. Gonna start out with a few 48 hr fasts next week and then see if I can get past my personal high of 82 hrs the week after.
The weight hasn't flown off as fast as I was hoping--since pausing drinking. This should really kick start it.

In the third fast of the last 7 days. Stared with 72 then a meal. Went 30 til a meal. Now sitting 42 and feeling good enough i might go to 72 again... maybe further.

I forgot how great out feels to let the body run maintenance routines.

I did 45 hours yesterday and am doing a +20 hour today. May go for another 44 or even 72 hour after that. You are correct about feeling good. I've slept much better the last two nights, too. And that makes the fasting that much easier.

I typically have insomnia when starting a fast. Even with less time sleeping it feels better.

I did my first 48 fast and broke it last night. I felt pretty awesome all day, especially after I hit 36. I also hit 239lbs yesterday morning which was the first time I have broke 240lbs since I was on active duty, so that was cool. I'll probably transition to a 16/8 routine again until I decide on doing another 48+ fast, maybe I start it after the Super Bowl and shoot for a 60-72 or so.

This was a good listen.

Glad you've found something that's helping you lose weight and makes you feel better. You're on a path which can reward you with pride and better life. It's honestly a rarity to find people willing to do it themselves. Continue your path and soon you'll look back with pride of your accomplishments.

Got a coworker who eats like sheet and drinks so much he's type 2 now and only mid 30's. He's watched my 80# loss and resulting health. I've explained it over and over.

His solution? One of those new shots. He is miserable, but rather than take responsibility for his health he is content to use medicine which makes him feel terrible and prone to emergency bathroom trips and limits lunch options cuz he can't handle food.

Won't even consider giving up booze for a few months to get under control.

It makes me sad.

Thanks. Yeah, the discussion I had with my Doctor about my liver was a wake up call considering my grandmother passed away in November from the final stages of liver failure. My Doctor has me on a few meds, but my goal is to get off of them, heal my liver, reverse Type II and lower my BP (but I think that might be hereditary). My Doctor also mentioned surgery as a last option, but that's not an option for me. I had a friend/acquaintance pass away last year from complications during a surgery like that and I want no part of that.

It was so easy to eat healthy in the Philippines. I ate pretty much all fresh food made from fresh ingredients without all of the processing and toxins/poisons that are put into our food.

It may be, but when you reduce the sugar in your bloodstream it lowers the water content. It's why there is such a significant weight loss initially during a fast. This reduced fluid in the blood acts to lower BP naturally as the veins and arteries aren't as full, if I understand Dr. Jamnadas correctly.
