The Thing People Don't Say Taysom Hill (1 Viewer)

wow, i forgot about that. The fact that he improved 100% from one year to the next as a WR is amazing, what if we had been patient and gave him all of the reps last year and this year as QB1, where would we be? Yes i said it.
No matter what he accomplishes he'll always the gimmick to the media.

No dount about it, Taysom is one of a kind. You have to go back decades to find someone that's even a valid comparison. That's amazing to me.

"Slinging Sammy Baugh" may be the closest comparison. Baugh played in an era (8 decades / 80+ years ago) when the football was more rounded in shape, not necessarily designed to be thrown; He did it anyway. He lead the league in so many different ways, for so many different years at different positions, it's almost unfathomable. He was the original "Swiss Army Knife ". He not only played QB, he also played Cornerback and he was the Punter. One season He lead the league in all 3, Passing, Punting, and Interceptions. His Single Season Punting Yards Average of 51.4 in 1940 stood as an NFL Record For 82 Years, until last year in 2022 when it was broken by Tennessee Titans Rookie Punter Ryan Stonehouse, who set the new record by averaging 53.1 yards per attempt.

Frank Gifford
was also gifted to Excell in different ways. He made the Pro Bowl at 3 different positions, Running Back, Defensive Back, and Flanker (Receiver). His best season was in 1956 (Over 6 decades ago / 66 years ago) when he was named league MVP. Frank Gifford and Taysom Hill are the Only 2 Players in NFL History To Have Scored At Least 9 Touchdowns by way of Rushing, Receiving, and Passing.

Baugh and Gifford lead the league in several different categories in several different seasons, we're named League MVP, and both were inducted into the NFL Hall Of Fame.

Taysom Hill will not accomplish any of that, however, it can be argued that he has excelled in even more different positions than both Baugh and Gifford, just not to the extent of their Greatness.

Lets not forget Jim Thorpe.
I didn't forget Jim Thorpe. He would have to be the Most Versatile Athlete of All Time, and arguably the Greatest All around Athlete Of All Time. He was an Olympian, a Professional Football/Baseball/Basketball Player. Sticking strictly to Football though, he didn't play at quite as many positions. His playing time was from 100 years ago.

Red Grange " The Galloping Ghost" would be another player to consider but again, not to the same extent. He dates back 100 years ago as well.

I read about those guys when I was in Jr H.S. But the one I was most impressed with was Sammy Baugh.

You probably know that Grange's college kick return record wasn't broken till Pierre Thomas did it.

ILL SAY THIS OVER AND OVER; HILL SHOULD BE ON THE FIELD FULL TIME. JUST NOT AS AT QB FULL FULL TIME.
Hill serves the Saints best in his all around utility role. No Doubt! There's no other player in the league that can do what he does.

People buy in to the ever much repeated narrative that Taysom couldn't be a FULL Time QB. There aren't 32 starters in the league better than Hill so that statement isn't true. Hill is 7-2 as a Starting QB. His Career Average Yards Per Attempt At 7.9 is the Highest In Saints Franchise History.

I think we need to prepare ourselves

A few years after Taysom retires he will only really be remembered by us

and at some point in the future there will be another player who does what Taysom does about as well as he did (or maybe not even as well), but that player will play for a marquee franchise (probably Dallas) and the media will not only drool non stop about him, will act that this is the first time there's ever been a player like that

And we will be livid about it, and scream "What about Taysom Hill????!!!!"

And we'll be ignored

Taysom Hill has a career rushing average of 5.5 yards per attempt. That's amazing cconsidering he is often used in short yardage and/or goal line situations, such as  his 1 yard touchdown run against the Jaguars which drives down his yards per carry average, especially on  the limited amount of attempts he gets.
It is amazing since most defenders know what is coming. You could hear Eagles linemen yell “quarterback power!” before the snap. Kudos to Sean Payton for designing his role and kudos to Hill for giving maximum effort every play.

Still a newbie here, so don't jump down my throat. I love Taysom. And the Saints offense has needed to generate production ANY way they can early in this season. (Still much chemistry, etc., to work on). And, i love what Taysom has done to contribute. I only wish he could contribute more when he and Derek are on the field at the same time. i realize much of Taysom's production has come from the QB position, so this may not be possible. But IF Taysom could add to the running attack while DC4 is on the field taking snaps, then that would help the play action pass effectiveness right? As it is, when Taysom is being his awesome self, and Derek's on the sideline, then DC comes in and Taysom's on the sidelines, this does nothing to help play axn, right? When Kamara or other RB is running strong, then that's directly helped the pass game IMO. So, i agree with the folks here saying Taysom should be on the field more, i'd just love to see that be together with DC for this and other reasons. Maybe i'm off base. for those of you that feel Taysom should be the 100% full time QB across the board, this doesn't make any sense, i realize.

I think Taysom is on the field a lot more than we realize. I'd like to see him get the ball more but we don't to break him. The rumor is that he's "only" human.

Such a great point. His body hasn't taken the beating that most ball carries have taken by the time they are 33 years old. That's one good thing about the way they use him. It's frustrating at times because you want him to get more touches but limiting his usage has worked for the most part.

It will be interesting to see how much longer his body can hold up. His limited workload will help prolong his career but but you know what they say about Father Time, he has never lost. Brady gave him a run for his money but he's still the undefeated, undisputed champ. How long can Taysom run super fast and run people over?
He runs high and gets hit.
