There have been funnier movies, but I’m not sure I’ve laughed harder during a movie than this
Among the many impressive things about early Steve Martin was how seamlessly he could switch from straight man to the funny one

I have a couple of good friends whose taste in movies are impeccable, and who’s opinions I value... both of them said ‘you have to watch Planes Trains Automobiles it’s one of the best movies ever !’.. so I did.. and I dont get i… I feel like im sheetting on all the movies in this thread lately and i dont mean to.. but maybe PTA is one of those films where you had to see it at that moment in time, i dont know .

and it had a very serious ending to keep it from being just another funny movie, it really pulled the movie together.

I think it’s that your taste is very, very idiosyncratic
I’m struggling for a way to explain that isn’t snobby - I mean zero slights when I say that you adore some things that would largely be considered pulp or pop or some such, but you respond to them like they’re high art
Which I think is wonderful. Like experiencing a Norman Rockwell or Amstel Adams like a Picasso

I once made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that was actually perfect- have no idea what weird alchemy was in play but when I bit into that sandwich, it was one of the best things I ever tasted
Sometimes your takes on threes company sound like ‘the best pb&j ever’

otoh, those things that aren’t in the spectrum of your taste you just have no time for - like your options seem to be GREAT or banal - not much wiggle room between the two

@Mr. Blue Sky
Sorry
I saw the 🫤 and I honestly didn’t mean any sort of slight
If I was/am mistaken please let me know
I tried to just provide an observation
But I do recognize its troubled water

i don't find steve martin funny.

i don't find steve martin funny.
I no longer do
LA Story was the beginning of the end - trying to be Woody Allen was not the play
then he decided to be Cary Grant - also not the move
I thought he was trying to course correct with Leap of Faith - like he was finding a Bill Murray, Michael Keaton avenue exploring some real character studies. Instead he focused on 2D team-ups - very boring

that's fair. i don't think his style of comedy has aged well, at least not for me. i always liked him when he'd host snl though.
