What’s interesting about Thriller, at least to me- is that when i was a wee lad the first id heard of this album was i believe the first single that was released - The Girl is Mine, which was Michael’s duet with Paul McCartney.. it’s been over 40 years so im not positive, but I think that song is what compelled me to purchase my first copy of Thriller, on cassette…. And it turned out- Oh yeah, there were some other decent songs on the album as well….. who knew.. actually that duet w/McCartney is probably the weakest song on the album .

This movie for me holds up. I watch it every Christmas, multiple times.

I had a set of headphones with the radio built in. First time I heard Thriller was on those most likely listening to B97…

B97 ! And the big deejay on B97 back then was Ugly Jerry Lousteau ! I was actually going to grade school with Ugly Jerry’s brother at that time.. we’d go up to the Poydras Plaza next to the Superdome where the B97 studio was and watch him at work.. to me it was the coolest thing in the world at that time .

I think it’s that your taste is very, very idiosyncratic
I’m struggling for a way to explain that isn’t snobby - I mean zero slights when I say that you adore some things that would largely be considered pulp or pop or some such, but you respond to them like they’re high art
Which I think is wonderful. Like experiencing a Norman Rockwell or Amstel Adams like a Picasso

I once made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that was actually perfect- have no idea what weird alchemy was in play but when I bit into that sandwich, it was one of the best things I ever tasted
Sometimes your takes on threes company sound like ‘the best pb&j ever’

otoh, those things that aren’t in the spectrum of your taste you just have no time for - like your options seem to be GREAT or banal - not much wiggle room between the two
In Zen we would call this Beginners Mind. It’s not a slight at all, as a matter of fact the goal is to maintain Beginners Mind as one progresses along the Eightfold Path

love that

i had a theatre friend (younger than me) who had just found the world of dance - he LOVED EVERYTHING he saw. i was jealous of him bc i was way too jaded and 'experienced/educated' to love anything but the most exquisite work
unfortunately he also got jaded and started discerning particular work

Beginners mind is large and expansive, whereas the mind of the “expert” can be smaller and closed. If you throw a rock in a large lake you get barely a ripple but throw that same rock in a small puddle and…
