Triplett says Saints Interest in Chris "Beanie" Wells is "Bona Fide" (3 Viewers)

Wells should be our pick, there are solid OLBs and Safeties in the 4th also. I think adding Wells with PT and Bush out of the backfield for screens and lining up in the slot would solidify our whole team not just our offense. The only thing that must change, and I think it will, is the amount of carries must go up. Payton had little faith in our running game and I think he wants to be more balanced. 3 headed monster like Giants keeps there offense of the field just as well as 3 and outs from a great defensive squad. Our Defense got the greatest upgrade in the past few years this free agency. We got GW and Vilma back. You can't ask for much more. GW is known to make players play up to their potential, and if not he will find someone who will. Darren Sharper was a superb addition even as a stop gap for this year. The FS we do pick up has a perrenial pro bowl DB to help him transition into the spot. I don't believe Jenkins will fall to us, and I believe between morgan and a rookie we pick up in the 4th + a FS in the 4th with the addition of Greer added with Porter and Young, our defense will become much more dominant as the seasons progress. Wells would be the most solid pick for us that I can see out of the players that I feel will be left. I'm still undecided completely on Matthews and Cushing, and Mauluga (spelling lol) just isn't what we're looking for. God knows if we drafted Wells in the 1st, every Saints fan on this board and in this state is going to be ecstatic. The kid is very talented and the combo of him with Bush in the backfield will be one of the deadliest in the NFL IMO. Shockey will do much better this year, and we will see his first TD in the first game of the year, I can feel it. Adrian Arrington will step up and I can see him on the field a good bit. If we add picks somehow from Lance Moore trade on draft day, I would then go for a Center also. If not you can always grab one for depth later. On paper, like the past few years, we have an incredible team for a small market area. It's our time damnit, the fans here bleed black and gold, and the fans here are the furthest thing from fair weather.. With Breesus lighting the way, the Saints will shine bright!

Nice article. Did you see the defense last year? It was horrible.

Winning increases running success. So if the defense can hold opponents under 20 points we will win and we will rush for more yards at the end of the game, Beanie or no Beanie. Of course, the Saints will not choose offense in the first round. The run pass ratio will become more balanced with a better defense not the other way around.

better defense is the key.

No better balance and coaching is the key. Your Offense effects your Defense as much as your Defense effects your Offense. Just a little something to chew on there. If their any former football players or coaches that frequent the forum they know exactly what Im talking about.

Have you seen the prospects available at 14? They aren't that great either.

If you had to pick between three guys, Cushing, Matthews, or Wells.

Cushing and Matthews, both are what I would call workout warriors. They have been driven up the boards by their 40 times, or other non football related drills. Both have a ton of question marks, from roids to their production on the field.

Wells, on the other hand, has always been a first rounder. He is the best RB in the draft, which MANY have stated is a position of need.

you dont have to take cushing or matthews at 14 . and with pt bush and mike bell you dont have to take wells at 14. trade down and get more picks

so PT cant play against good run defense? I would like to know which game you are using to prove this point. Show me one example of PT getting shut down by a good run defense.

First off, let me start by saying it is more than clear that if Payton believes PT could contribute he will get the carries. But because of that, I am sure you will respond with he didn't even have a chance to produce in some games, which is farthest from the truth.

Now:
@ Was- 1.3 YPC
@ Den- 2.5 YPC
SF- 1 YPC (this is the one that does not count)
Minn- 0 CARRIES
@ Car- 2 YPC
@ TB- 3.1 YPC
@ Chi- 4.0 YPC

Now, the Chicago game. I've never been a person to say that someone had a big game because they made 1 big play. I prefer to subtract the one big play, to see what he did over the course of the game, not during just one play. In that Chicago game, PT ran for 2.1 YPC, when you take away his one big play. So by no means did he tear up the Chicago defense that night.

Again, I know you will say he didn't get the chances. Which is farthest from the truth, Coach Payton knows more than anyone on this site. If he thought PT could contribute, he would have gotten the carries in those games. It is that simple.

It's not that simple. It will be very difficult to trade down unless a big name falls, which in that case the Saints may not want to trade at all.

On the day of the NFL draft, I would be willing to bet the Saints explore trade up and trade down options. But rarely does any of that make play.

I would not be opposed to taking Wells.

I'm sick of having to throw it on every down when we are behind. Whether it's 3 and 1 or 3 and 11, you already know we are throwing it if we get behind.

With a bigger back, maybe our defense can actually get a rest and be fresh for them 4th quarters.

You ignored my points all together. Wells will have little impact on both winning and running success. The drills are football related which is why they do them at the National Football League Combine. Both Matthews and Cushing had above average production in college. And there are other prospects to take on defense.

Hell no. That would be such a waste of a pick. We have more than enough skill players and frankly wells is not a good fit. From what I've seen, he's one dimensional. He doesn't have particularly good skills as a reciever, and that would take him out of about 60 percent of our game plan.

If Payton is looking for a bigger back, why not draft one in the later rounds or just sign a free agent. Investing a top 15 pick in a running back would be crazy IMO. There has to be a better option.

Here's a breakdown by quarter of the points scored against the Saints in our loses last season. In all the games we lost last year we gave up the most points in the 2nd quarter, when our defense still should have been fresh.

1st quarter - 50 points
2nd quarter - 83 points
3rd quarter - 54 points
4th quarter - 50 points

From my assessment our defense was equally bad in all quarters, not just in the 4th when they should have been tired from being on the field all the time. In all but 1 of those loses our defense gave up more than 26 points, that's nothing short of pitiful.
