Triplett says Saints Interest in Chris "Beanie" Wells is "Bona Fide" (4 Viewers)

First off, let me start by saying it is more than clear that if Payton believes PT could contribute he will get the carries. But because of that, I am sure you will respond with he didn't even have a chance to produce in some games, which is farthest from the truth.

Now:
@ Was- 1.3 YPC
@ Den- 2.5 YPC
SF- 1 YPC (this is the one that does not count)
Minn- 0 CARRIES
@ Car- 2 YPC
@ TB- 3.1 YPC
@ Chi- 4.0 YPC

Now, the Chicago game. I've never been a person to say that someone had a big game because they made 1 big play. I prefer to subtract the one big play, to see what he did over the course of the game, not during just one play. In that Chicago game, PT ran for 2.1 YPC, when you take away his one big play. So by no means did he tear up the Chicago defense that night.

Again, I know you will say he didn't get the chances. Which is farthest from the truth, Coach Payton knows more than anyone on this site. If he thought PT could contribute, he would have gotten the carries in those games. It is that simple.

Why would you take out any big plays? Makes no sense....they are part of the game.

You ignored my points all together. Wells will have little impact on both winning and running success. The drills are football related which is why they do them at the National Football League Combine. Both Matthews and Cushing had above average production in college. And there are other prospects to take on defense.

Wells would have a big impact. The Saints are already the one of the best ball control offenses in the NFL, but you can always improve. Sean Payton likes to compliment his passing game with a Big RB, and you will not see the balance people want to see until the Saints get a guy who can carry the ball 18-22 times a game and wear down defenses.

The drills are not football related. What is the point of the 40? These guys are football players, not track athletes. The bench press, there is a big difference between how strong you are under the bar and on the football field. The high jump, this is football, not basketball. The high jump might come into play for recievers, but not nearly as much as people believe. Another big thing, football players play in pads. They don't run around in spandex. And the biggest, why in the world would you judge a player on what he did in 3 days rather than what he did in 3 years? The NFL Combine is the most overrated and biggest waste of time event in the NFL. And if you ever run into NFL coaches or scouts, they will tell you the same. Just much more educated.

Who then? Cushing and Matthews are not worth the 14th pick. I've bene stating this for god knows how long. And most on this forum don't like either. Even though there are the people who have fallen in love just because of their combine numbers and measureables.

Lets put it this way, there are defensive players that could be taken. But none are that n word. Even though in the first you should look at BPA, not that n word.

we need to be able to run the ball, be able to wear down a defense....if they like Wells I say take him, I want Matthews personally, but the Wells pick would make sense, we got Sharper, Greer, Morgan, Coleman as defensive additions and we can get a safety prospect in the 4th (rounds were safeties are normally picked)...it could go either way with that 1st round pick...but the Saints know who will be available to them in each round they select, I'm sure they have a few sheets with a few scenarios on how to improve this team in this up coming draft....should be fun to see what they do with so few picks....I'm looking forward to it...

did anybody count how many threads there are of beanie wells so far? can anybody guess how many more we will have?

He should've omitted the shortest play as well. When you take away the largest and the smallest gain and average the rest, you get an accurate gauge of the player's performance during the game. It's a standard practice in statistics.

Washington - PTs worst performance of the season. didnt get anything going, but only had 6 carries to work with.
Denver - not a great game for PT. only had 6 carries, and yet 2 of them resulted in touchdowns.
San Francisco and Minnesota - obviously dont count as a bad game because he didnt get any touches
Tampa Bay- the first time we played them he had 10 carries, for an average of 5.2 ypc. you accidently left that out because it weakens your arguement.
Chicago- PT grinded it out on the ground with over 20 carries into the heart of a very physical bears defense. his hard work eventually paid off when he busted loose for a big run (which definitely does count, because it put 6 points on the board). PT finished that game with close to 150 total yards rushing and receiving. thats hardly a poor showing on his part, but nice try.

right, because Payton is known for running the ball :jpshakehead: Just because he didnt give PT the carries, absolutely does not mean PT wouldnt have been able to contribute. Everyone on this board knows that Payton didnt commit to the run in certain situations when he should have. Even Sean Payton himself admitted this, so this last point of yours is especially weak.

which does not translate into football. When a runningback gets a bunch of carries, he will likely have multiple short gains of less than 3 yards. Thats part of grinding it out on the ground. You pound away with short gains until eventually the defense gets worn down and the RB busts a long one. But 2 or 3 yard gains are much more common than a 40 yard gain, so removing the longest gain and the shortest gain is going to pull the ypc total downward in almost every case.

I agree. When analyzing a players performance, its best to just watch the tape and compare their performances with other players that play the same position.

Ignoring a 40 or 50 yard TD run would be like trying to critique a movie without watching the conclusion. If a running back makes a big run like that, chances are it was the most impactful play of the game, and ignoring it is impossible if you're trying to evaluate how mch a certain player helped his team win a football game.

i think or d. will be much improved with the changes made. also we have a healty cb we didnt have last year. if we pick up a smash mouth runner i would not complain... ive been predicting that for months.. but i prey its not NO SHOW MARINO. nice guy ive met him but i dont think he has what we need.

Here's a breakdown by quarter of the points scored against the Saints in our loses last season. In all the games we lost last year we gave up the most points in the 2nd quarter, when our defense still should have been fresh.

1st quarter - 50 points
2nd quarter - 83 points
3rd quarter - 54 points
4th quarter - 50 points

From my assessment our defense was equally bad in all quarters, not just in the 4th when they should have been tired from being on the field all the time. In all but 1 of those loses our defense gave up more than 26 points, that's nothing short of pitiful.

Do these numbers exclude defensive and special teams scoring?

Just say no to Beanie Wells. Alot of his own fans throw the word around soft, when speaking about him. He was injury prone throughout college and the worst part about it is that he seemed to always be out for the big games. If he cant take the pounding in the Big 10, he is not going to be able to take it in the NFL. He is a very solid back, though.

when did he become a NO SHOW . he may not be what we need ,but he is the best rb in the draft
