Tyrann Mathieu and Saints to re-visit talks (1 Viewer)

Panic pick also makes no sense to me since there was so much talent on the board for different positions.

They wanted this guy, I just have no idea why.
That’s exactly why it was a panic pick! They saw Brisker go 1 pick before they were about to take him… they tried to trade down with no luck… time was running out, and SOMEONE pulled the trigger on this kid?!?

The only way this ends up making any sort of sense, is if they are about to trade Lattimore, Adebo, or Roby.

Otherwise, they just used a top 50 pick on an “at best” 4th string CB and STer.

Just makes absolutely no sense to spend pick #49 on a backup corner.

That's a TWENTY-SEVEN picks higher than Adebo who played fantastic for us last year.

If he wasn't drafted to play Safety... why the heck did we draft him?? No way he's starting over Adebo or Lattimore. Slots covered by CGJ.

Someone help me understand this??
Adebo isn’t a sure thing. I like him but he’s not a lock. CJGJ is going to be pricy and we have no money. Mayes may end up being forced into FS if PJW doesn’t do well/Mathieu doesn’t sign…so Taylor could start at SS in 2023. Clearly, the Saints value his versatility and ability to potentially start at numerous spots, as well as be a special teams ace in the meantime. I don’t think Taylor is in the FS plans though

He’s not a FS. That’s pretty much the only secondary position I’m confident he won’t be playing. I think he backs up the CB spots, and perhaps in 2023 plays nickel of CJGJ leaves or SS if Mayes fails.
Then it's weird to spend such a high pick on someone who has zero chance in starting right?

If we drafted him to play backup CB and to potentially replace someone IF they leave, that seems ridiculous for such a high pick.

Don't you also find it ridiculous to think a professional team would have only ONE player they wanted?? The bears took who we wanted before us.. and we panicked??

You don't think they had backup options?? Sorry, I just don't buy a professional team is that incompetent.

Watching the draft play out there's no way we didn't have a group of players they wanted. They WANTED this guy.

The Saints drafted Turner last year to be a backup at DE. There was not going to be ANY player drafted in the 2nd round that would have started for the Saints this year. So they took something they liked that they felt could contribute as a backup to multiple spots/be great on special teams and play a key role in 2023.

Because things happen. The best you can do in the draft is accumulate the best players you can regardless of position. Checking boxes is an inferior strategy to accumulating talent because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Accumulate players not check marks.

Turner point makes sense.

Thanks for responding.

Further evidence that it was a panic pick.
That's just speculation. You have no clue what's going on in the draft room. Just about every team has a draft board and a plan B if a pick doesn't fall where they want. The Saints FO has never struck me as being unprepared or unprofessional. This idea that Taylor is some sort of panic pick is absurd on its face.

Depth and long term contributions. Roby won't be here long, probably won't make it to camp and definitely not past 2022. Crawley is, well, Crawley. So the 2ndary needed some depth, this way the kid is not forced to step in as a need from day1.

So they used a top 50 pick as insurance “just in case” someone doesn’t work out?
