Try not to look at it as a 1year pick, Malcolm Jenkins didn't start out the gate either. So they used a top 50 pick as insurance “just in case” someone doesn’t work out?

The ability to start at multiple positions is really valuable. Who do you think they could have drafted in the 2nd that would be starting for the Saints this year?So they used a top 50 pick as insurance “just in case” someone doesn’t work out?
Turner was not drafted to be a backup. He was drafted to be a rotational player. Much easier to do that at DE than at CB. Taylor is a great special teamer that they hope can eventually develop into a nickel guy or contributor in the secondary. I hope he was not drafted as insurance if CGJ negotiations go south. The Saints drafted Turner last year to be a backup at DE. There was not going to be ANY player drafted in the 2nd round that would have started for the Saints this year. So they took something they liked that they felt could contribute as a backup to multiple spots/be great on special teams and play a key role in 2023.
True, they should always take the BPA within their ratings cloud, and they do.Because things happen. The best you can do in the draft is accumulate the best players you can regardless of position. Checking boxes is an inferior strategy to accumulating talent because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Accumulate players not check marks.
That's just speculation. You have no clue what's going on in the draft room. Just about every team has a draft board and a plan B if a pick doesn't fall where they want. The Saints FO has never struck me as being unprepared or unprofessional. This idea that Taylor is some sort of panic pick is absurd on its face.
1st round picks are not meant to be rotational. Cam will be retiring in the next couple of years, so he may slide over to that side but I don't he was drafted to be just a rotational guy.Turner was not drafted to be a backup. George Pickens, Alex Pierce, or Skyy Moore would contribute immediately on the offense… James Cook would likely be the starting RB for around 6 games! The ability to start at multiple positions is really valuable. Teams and GMs LOVE to try to look like the smartest guy in the room. It’s a fact!Don't you also find it ridiculous to think a professional team would have only ONE player they wanted?? The bears took who we wanted before us.. and we panicked??
You don't think they had backup options?? Sorry, I just don't buy a professional team is that incompetent.
Watching the draft play out there's no way we didn't have a group of players they wanted. They WANTED this guy.

None of those guys would have started.George Pickens, Alex Pierce, or Skyy Moore would contribute immediately on the offense… James Cook would likely be the starting RB for around 6 games!
Trey McBride realistically could have won TE1.
Bryan Cook is an actual Safety that would’ve made a bunch more sense.
So there’s 5 guys off the top of my head

The Saints took Payton Turner last year!!! Carlos Ruiz the year before!! They’re known for this!!!
I’m just happy they didn’t take another no-name “look how smart we are” pick in the 1st round!

It's still a nonsensical notion no matter how you try to dress it up. Teams and GMs are gonna pick who they think will best help the team. Their goal is to field a winning team. They couldn't care less about looking like whatever people think they should. I know I wouldn't if I was a GM. They don't always get it right. And no one has a perfect record in the draft, but the Saints FO gets a hit far more often than they miss.Teams and GMs LOVE to try to look like the smartest guy in the room. It’s a fact!
