Tyrann Mathieu and Saints to re-visit talks (2 Viewers)

So they used a top 50 pick as insurance “just in case” someone doesn’t work out?
The ability to start at multiple positions is really valuable. Who do you think they could have drafted in the 2nd that would be starting for the Saints this year?

The Saints drafted Turner last year to be a backup at DE. There was not going to be ANY player drafted in the 2nd round that would have started for the Saints this year. So they took something they liked that they felt could contribute as a backup to multiple spots/be great on special teams and play a key role in 2023.
Turner was not drafted to be a backup. He was drafted to be a rotational player. Much easier to do that at DE than at CB. Taylor is a great special teamer that they hope can eventually develop into a nickel guy or contributor in the secondary. I hope he was not drafted as insurance if CGJ negotiations go south.

Because things happen. The best you can do in the draft is accumulate the best players you can regardless of position. Checking boxes is an inferior strategy to accumulating talent because you never know what will happen tomorrow. Accumulate players not check marks.
True, they should always take the BPA within their ratings cloud, and they do.

But the Saints also talk about having a vision for each player. I'm sure, absolutely no doubt, that they have one for Taylor. Usually the vision can be seen, at least generally, by fans without a ton of guesswork. In this case, I just can't see that choice, at that point in the draft. Imo, it just makes no sense. In time that vision will become apparent, but for now the choice leaves me puzzled.

That's just speculation. You have no clue what's going on in the draft room. Just about every team has a draft board and a plan B if a pick doesn't fall where they want. The Saints FO has never struck me as being unprepared or unprofessional. This idea that Taylor is some sort of panic pick is absurd on its face.

Thats not speculation. Thats plain illogical. It doesn't make sense to think that the Saints didn't have a list of players ready for this pick when the round BEGAN much less 1 pick before them.

No, this is just an emotional fan attempting to make sense of a world where the Saints don't hold their world view. If I think coconut is disgusting, I may also think anyone eating it must be doing so under duress. If you pick German chocolate cake over apple pie, it's because an evil villian has kidnapped your family and threatened to cut off their body parts until you finish eating it. It's sometimes hard for people to be honest about their personal biased feelings when they strongly feel right about something. Only a persecuted soul would eat coconut willingly and this Saints front office, which has been participating in drafts for ages, has no idea what to do while on the clock. Is that logical?

1st round picks are not meant to be rotational. Cam will be retiring in the next couple of years, so he may slide over to that side but I don't he was drafted to be just a rotational guy.

George Pickens, Alex Pierce, or Skyy Moore would contribute immediately on the offense… James Cook would likely be the starting RB for around 6 games!
Trey McBride realistically could have won TE1.
Bryan Cook is an actual Safety that would’ve made a bunch more sense.

So there’s 5 guys off the top of my head

Don't you also find it ridiculous to think a professional team would have only ONE player they wanted?? The bears took who we wanted before us.. and we panicked??

You don't think they had backup options?? Sorry, I just don't buy a professional team is that incompetent.

Watching the draft play out there's no way we didn't have a group of players they wanted. They WANTED this guy.
Teams and GMs LOVE to try to look like the smartest guy in the room. It’s a fact!

The Saints took Payton Turner last year!!! Carlos Ruiz the year before!! They’re known for this!!!

I’m just happy they didn’t take another no-name “look how smart we are” pick in the 1st round!

None of those guys would have started.

This is why I dont follow draft picks before draft no matter who they pick there always someone better, I promise none of this going matter in 2 years

I liked McBride and those receivers but when you factor in Harty, Callaway and TQS there's still a lot of talent for that #3 spot. Doubt they've given up on Trautman, Johnson has talent and a focused Hill might be good despite his low career catches vs salary but we can't do anything to change that.

Roby hasn't been all that great when he's been asked to play and he and Lattimore have missed time. CB is one of those spots where it's really hard to argue against adding depth there even if they don't start. Plus I think Allen made those comments knowing we'd be going after Mathieu, I think it was the plan all along unless we had someone real talented fall. Start Taylor at CB this year and as he gets acclimated in the future give him more reps at safety.

Also we were last in the league at yards given up on punt returns despite having a really good punter and ST pro-bowler. That's a severally underrated impact he can have as a rookie if he can help improve that.

It's still a nonsensical notion no matter how you try to dress it up. Teams and GMs are gonna pick who they think will best help the team. Their goal is to field a winning team. They couldn't care less about looking like whatever people think they should. I know I wouldn't if I was a GM. They don't always get it right. And no one has a perfect record in the draft, but the Saints FO gets a hit far more often than they miss.

This is a defensive team so I welcome all the additions to the defense. Playing with multiple players only adds to the effectiveness of the defense we do not want to rely on just the starters but every set we run (mainly a 4-2-5) we need DB's for so we have to have 5-6 starting caliber defensive backs and a talented defensive line that can stop the run and get to the passer and linebackers that can pursue and we have that.
