USMNT - ‘23 and beyond (3 Viewers)

Agreed. It was a complete reversal. Aaronson and Pepi have both made themselves more valuable as supersubs than starters...Aaronson a bit more than Pepi. Theres not many players in the pool that can read the game like Pepi. He is always where he needs to be.

Thats sort of the odd thing about games where Balo starts and Pepi comes on. Players dont look for Balogun, they arent trying to get the ball into him. But Pepi - and maybe its because younger, less experienced players are on the field - they look to get him the ball.

The next window is Germany and Ghana. We will get a better idea next month.....and Gio should be available.

In all fairness, Balo has that same natural " knack" to be in the right spot/area, but also has reaction skill ( see his goal )

However, if you go back 2 years, my biggest knock on Pepi was his lack of "instinctual play" - where do i need to be when the ball is ( at a certain spot, moving a certain way as is the player ) - and i said back then that he needed playing time, at a high level, to round that part of his game out. And this is the result. He now knows when to dart for near post or slow down for back pass- something he didnt do just 2 short years ago. Thats knowing your teammates but more importantly knowing where the space is that your teammate sees developing too. Very nuanced part of a strikers game to materialize and some do quicker than others. Some of the better goal scorers were never the biggest or strongest players, but they absolutely knew where to be and when, and had the ability to finish. ( Mueller, Klinsmann, Lewandowski ( altho he is a big dude ) , Suarez, Cavani, Benzema, etc etc etc )

Both Balo and Pepi seemingly have grasped this ( balo i think is more instinctual than Pepi - but that has more to do with his academy/coaching from young age )

And FWIW this was exactly the score line you would expect vs 73rd ranked team. We didnt "play down" to the competition. Something that had been a bit of an issue over the years. But yeah, lets see what happens in the next window when we play top 20 opposition who arent looking to just "show up".

Liked all of what i say last night. Just gotta keep it going.

I forgot too- we host 2026 so we dont need to go thru qualifications- so our entries into Gold Cup, CONMEBOL etc are going to be our measuring sticks.

At the beginning of matches (first 30?), CP and Weah and maybe even Dest are looking for their shot as much as looking to play someone through
Wes is the only one who seems to think ‘assist first’
And this isn’t a knock- our early goals seem to come from throwing pressure at the defense and pry something open
2nd half tired legs seemed inclined to be more generous with passing than dribbling into attack

McKennie has his passing boots on tonite

Don't think I've seen so many long crosses by one player that didn't miss, every single one was perfect....he was, by far the player of the match.....he set up numerous scoring chances.....my only criticism is they need to finish better....the energy and chances were there.....I think Pepi should be getting more minutes.....

Well, finishing has long been a problem for them. Just don't have the goal scorers that the best world cup teams seems to have.

Balogun is becoming, if he isn’t already, a world class finisher. That’s as much the giant get he was as the position we’ve been lacking for, ever. The wingers just need to figure out how to play with him instead of trying to play as they have their entire NT career without a legit center forward by trying to do it themselves.

Which then leads again, to Pepi. He isn’t as clinical or naturally gifted or as groomed as Balogun who grew up with Arsenal. But the guy has made himself probably the 2nd best finisher we have. He just doesn’t miss a bunch of chances.

I’d say with Berhalter, Pepi is a supersub. Berhalter isn’t much for creativity. He isn’t the Sean Payton type of mind that forms a system around his players strengths. He is a system guy and hammering square pegs into round holes type of guy.

We have the talent to play a 3-5-2 to have Balo and Pepi on the field together. But we would need someone else besides GGG.

not that it would ever happen for all the reasons
but I would have Balo, Weah and Gio in front then have CP and Pepi as the supersubs

October friendly roster announced, and while Im firmly NeverBerhalter, this is may be the least Berhalter roster of all time. The omission of the likes of Long, Roldan, Morris, Acosta, The Pirate of Carribean, Yedlin, Arriola etc is pretty telling that maybe, MAYBE, he has finally decided to let go of some of them.

Its a solid roster. Tyler Adams having a setback is the only bad news here. Gio back in the team AND listed as a midfielder on a Berhalter roster is huge. I guess it took all that mess to have someone else show Berhalter how effective Gio can be at the 10 for him to change his tune.

GOALKEEPERS (2): Ethan Horvath (Nottingham Forest/ENG; 9/0), Matt Turner (Nottingham Forest/ENG; 33/0)

DEFENDERS (8): Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic/SCO; 12/0), Sergiño Dest (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 28/2), DeJuan Jones (New England Revolution; 7/0), Kristoffer Lund (Palermo/ITA; 2/0), Tim Ream (Fulham/ENG; 52/1), Chris Richards (Crystal Palace/ENG; 12/1), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United; 26/3), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach/GER; 6/0)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Johnny Cardoso (Internacional/BRA; 7/0), Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo/ESP; 17/0), Lennard Maloney (Heidenheim/GER; 0/0), Weston McKennie (Juventus/ITA; 46/11), Yunus Musah (AC Milan/ITA; 29/0), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund/GER; 20/4), Malik Tillman (PSV Eindhoven/NED;64/0)

FORWARDS (6): Brenden Aaronson (Union Berlin/GER; 34/8), Folarin Balogun (Monaco/FRA; 4/2), Kevin Paredes (Wolfsburg/GER; 1/0), Ricardo Pepi (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 18/9), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan/ITA; 62/26), Tim Weah (Juventus/ITA; 33/5)

Yedlin, Roldan and Arriola- gotta be what mid 30s now? Morris is one trick pony. Long stinks.

The question now is what does he produce WITH this roster.

We come out playing Berhalter Ball with THIS roster, we @#$@#ED.

Right, largely the same roster he underperformed with in the last window - and added Gio.

Callaghan had this roster humming in Nations League. While Germany is in another class than Mex/Can, youve got to see this team go toe to toe and take on the German back line instead of just sending the crosses in non stop.

The other thing people are going to have to get over, is that Gio probably wont be in the 11 for either game. He still hasnt played a minute for bvb this season. Folks are probably going to gasp that Berhalter is taking a shot at Gio by not starting him, but if you havent played a single club minute, the best you can hope for is to bring him on around the 70th minute as a subersub.
