We Needed This Beatdown (1 Viewer)

This was not a good team when we had most of those pieces. It's not going to be a good one with them next year. We have no depth precisely because we screwed the cap up so badly. The time to rip the bandaid off is now. Eat some contracts, sign UDFAs, start all your drafted rookies, and play for the future next year.

This is why I did not want to extend Kamara. We did ourselves in further for a fan favorite who will end up retiring before we are even competitive again. Taysom is 35 and made of glass at this point. Our #1 WR has the type of concussion issues that end careers. Our #2 WR is a glorified #3 WR.

The time for drastic changes is now because if this culture festers another couple of seasons, we could end up in a really bad place as a franchise.

The real sin is how they traded away so many draft picks. Every team by default gets 7 draft picks. The Saints over the last 5 years average 5.8 picks per year while treating the cap the way a spoiled 10 year old uses their parents credit card.

The Packers over the last five years: 53 draft picks.

The Saints: 29 draft picks.

The Packers have drafted 24!!!!!!! more players than the Saints. That is more than THREE full drafts worth of players more!!!!!!

The Saints have been managed horrendously and it all starts at the very top.

Getting blown out by a bad Raiders team was necessary. There was too much delusion within the organization that we can just get healthy and run this back. Darren Rizzi is not an NFL HC, and I've never thought he was. Spencer Rattler is a 5th round talent whose biggest flaws do not get fixed at the NFL level. The rest of the team is void of talent and incredibly old at too many starting positions, specifically on defense. The salary cap is a complete disaster.

The time for a total reset is now. Take your lumps, fire everyone, clear the cap, play a bunch of rookies next season, and go 4-13 next year if you must. Get a top draft pick and find a franchise QB. If we don't do that, we could end up in a franchise spiral that takes a decade to emerge from.
They can't just "clear the cap".

... and speaking of quality backups... one thing is to have 1-2 guys step up when 1-2 starters are down... another is to field half an offense of "quality backups" for 3 quarters of a season.

During the Packers game, they showed a graph of the number of games the Packers starring o-line had missed so far into the season: 1 game. One starter had missed one game. How many games has the Saints o-line lost so far? Not only the starters, but the backups as well?

But really what can Loomis do? Yes I know he can shift cash but this team is still so buried in mismanagement of the cap that other than extending people what can be done? Say they rebuild, cut Carr, Davis, Jordan, Mathiew, and the rest of the older high paid players, whatever magic they can try you’re still 2 years away from any sort of reasonable cap

Listen. There are human beings on this board, that say depth is depth. That every team loses when they get into their depth. Ignoring 'quality' depth. Ignoring the next man up being a 3rd round pick instead of a UDFA. Now, those same people propped up Dennis Allen for nearly 3 years, and honestly probably would still be defending him today.

But people need to really take a step back and realize that in this example, the Packers have drafted 24 more players in a 5 year period. That's an extra draft pick worthy player at every single position on the field, plus 2 more picks. An entire team of draft graded, drafted depth. I just fail to see how thats not, enormously easy to understand. We have poor quality starters. Old men playing multiple positions. Our best WR is a guy someone else didn't want 5 weeks ago. And nearly the entirety of our 'depth' wouldn't even be on other rosters.

And to nail down the point of how we've been conditioned to not value draft picks, there is a thread asking if we could potentially trade draft picks for Shanahan. You cant make this stuff up.

We are where we are because of Loomis. There is no other way around it. His decisions in the draft and the cap. Its all on him.

The scariest thing to come from today’s game was that our defense was shredded by a bad team led by Aiden O’Connell and an ancient running back who had never come close to a 100 yard game. They made us look foolish.
And it happened at home. The Dome used to be an advantage. Not right now.

I'm not sure it will matter. Loomis is arrogant at this point. He knows he inherited a golden ticket when Mr. Benson passed away and does what he wants without ramifications. He's loaded the building with his yes people and doesn't care about winning anymore. He'll come out after the season smacking his mouth with some gum and give bad answers again. Then he'll hire a head scratcher of a HC like Glenn or Marrone and we'll try to put a good spin on it because we want to be hopeful. Then he'll make some questionable extensions, restructures and draft picks.
Yes. I have bad feelings that this will occur.

Please Gayle come save your kingdom from the serpants.

No team has adequate backups for this many injuries. This is a myth.

There's a reason you have this many injuries, every single year. And there's a reason you don't have depth though. You can say its a myth, but its very easily quantifiable. You sign old players to dumb extensions, you have to work out from 80-100+ million over the cap every year, you trade away draft picks to draft other players that you whiff on and what do you have left to sign? UDFA and players you are getting at a bargain because.....they are always injured.

I keep hearing this argument, but it doesn't remove fault from Loomis. Or responsibility from the franchise. It is what is it because of their decisions. Its not like our practice facility is poltergeist. Its all very, very explainable. Its not an excuse, it was by design. You cant use the excuse that a house is falling, when the foundation is made of rice crispies. This was utterly predictible.

The Saints have a 4-19 record against winning teams the last three seasons. We are LOSERS and will continue to be LOSERS until a dramatic change in direction is made. Even with everything going our way it will take at least 3 strong off seasons to turn over the roster, fix the cap and acquire the QB of the future. Gum smacking Loomis is not the man for the job - let's start by getting him out of the GM chair and go from there.

This is 100% everything that needs to be said.
