What happens to Reggie when Mike Bell returns? (1 Viewer)

Nothing happens to Reggie when Bell comes back, he'll continue to play his role. I'd be more worried about how carries are to be split between Thomas and Bell. Thomas is the better back, by far, but Bell has earned some carries, in my opinion.

first off. WHY WOULD HE NOT BE BACK NEXT YEAR!?!?! HE SIGNED A 6 YEAR CONTRACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get the facts before you post your little hearts out!!!

sorry.

Now, as for the running back position. Pierre Thomas has looked, IMO, a lot better than Mike Bell. Reggie Bush is hitting holes like never before. Infact, he had 6.2 ypc against the Jets. Not bad, right? Anyhow, this is my RB situations.

1st down and 10: Reggie bush (looking for a big play or atleast a couple yards to make it easier for the recievers)
2nd down and 4: Pierre Thomas
2nd down and 1: Mike Bell
2nd down and 8: Reggie Bush (this is a passing situation, possibly a RB draw to reggie to get it to hopefully around 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 3)
3 down and 1: Mike Bell or Pierre Thomas

Now as for 4th and 1's or goalline situations. It will more than likely be Bell, just because of his ability to move a defense. For anyone who thinks Mike Bell is a better running back than Pierre, you are crazy. If you think Mike Bell is more valuable than Reggie Bush, you're crazy. You are intitled to your own opinion, but on the other hand I am intitled to call you a nutcase.
Some cocky comments Mr. Football.......guess you got all the facts?

Well, one thing is sure. If you have ANYTHING even slightly negative to say about Bush you're going to get thumbs down from everyone.

My thoughts - he'd be a beloved fan favorite if he'd been an undrafted FA. Even then, he's only a 3rd down back and punt returner. If he can protect the ball he'll be a nice asset down the back stretch. We'll need everyone to contribute this year and his time will come along with Lance. Having the burden off his shoulders should keep him healthy.

Reggie is the 3rd down back and continued to get in as such even after the fumble.

So to answer your question, nothing will happen to him.

I think you mean 3rd string back because you have to be able to break tackles as a 3rd down back.

It is funny how when Bell was healthy, he was the absolute BEAST who can't be stopped. PT is now the man and he's deserved it, but people feel the need to put down Bell. Why can't they both be pretty darn good running backs?

If Reggie was an undrafted FA he would have been on the practice squad.

mike bell has started 2 games dude!! Reggie has been here for 4 years!!!

wow. so much disrespect for Reggie. He does too much for the community, the team, and the players for these stupid *** discussions.

EDIT/ADDITION: IM DONE WITH THIS THREAD.........!!

Reggie has regressed. No one's hating, they're simply stating observations. I promise you even reggie himself is unhappy with his performance yesterday. Stop painting yourself out to be a better fan b/c you blindly defend him. I'm more sick of of the blind defenders than the threads about reggie's problems

Excellent post. Reggie will be fine and he'll continue to get his touches. As long as we have Payton at the helm, I'm not gonna worry. With the bye here and 12 games left to play, Reggie will have plenty of oppotunities to redeem himself.

I think you answered your own question right there. Reggie is not a traditional back and isn't used that way. I haven't broken down all the plays he's in... but it appears that when he's in the Saints are in passing formations, and Drew can audible into a run for Reggie if the defense shows a formation. Mike and Pierre line up in a lot of I-formations -- I haven't seen Reggie in that formation this year (I may have missed it).

To me, this looks like Mike and Pierre play the "same position" and Reggie plays something different. So Mike won't take carries away from Reggie - Mike instead will spell Pierre. It also looks apparent that Pierre is no more effective at moving the pile than Reggie, so Mike might be used in those situations. Look at the past 2 games -- Reggie is getting most of his touches in the first half - when the passing game is used more... and he's averaging over 5 yards per carry the last 2 games. Pierre is used in the second half as the defense wears down. Why should this change? Both backs right now are extremely effective running the ball right now.

Reggie will continue to get 5-10 carries, and 5-10 passes per game for 10-15 touches per game. What will limit Reggie's carries are the game situations that determine if we should be passing more or traditionally running more.

As far as the offseason - we should leave that to the offseason. I believe Reggie restructured his contract last year to take more money as a bonus, so it may be more cap friendly to keep him on the roster this year.

To be honest, I'd prefer to not have a back with a single 100 yard game this year -- I'd rather see an 80 yard per game rusher and 50 yard per game rusher and 30 yard per game rusher every game. This will keep our backs healthy into the post-season.

Hold on a sec bucko... Lets put this in proper perspective.

"If you have EVERYTHING negative to say, every day, MANY times a day, about Bush you're going to get thumbs down from everyone."

Now, why? Because everyone is pretty fed up with the literal "daily slapfight" over Bush. Be happy I'm not a mod, because every thread that even looked like it was going down that road would be sent to BTL or simply deleted, and you guys would have to find something else to try to lord over one another.

Thank you.

Reggie is a talented player, and doesn't need the constant excuses and apologies.

His role has been reduced, and unless he suddenly and unexpectedly improves his YPC up the middle, I can see him getting 10-12 touches per game, evenly split running/receiving.

Bell is our most dangerous option on straight runs, Pierre being real close if not tied. Pierre is our most dangerous option in space, because he has great hands, vision, and breaks all but the most solid tackles. Our most dangerous punt return man is probably not Reggie. I think it may be Harper or even Jenkins. What does that leave for Reggie? That leaves him speed. Although not nearly as fast and quick as he used to be, he still has it. Speed is a valuable NFL commodity in some instances. Some teams will sell their soul to get speed. It can create some favorable match ups, and gives us a few useful options.

The remaining question is, is any player that gets a dozen touches worth $13 mil per year? I'm thinking there are more productive uses for that much cap money.

If his salary is really 13.6 million dollars next year then I agree he will have to take a HUGE pay cut or else he needs to be cut. We are going to have to pay Sharper more next year, and we will have to pay Evans (FA) and many of the following: P Thomas (RFA), L Moore (FA), K Clancy(FA), S. Fujita (FA), Usama Young (RFA), Roman Harper(FA), J Bushrod (RFA), Mike Bell (FA), Zach Streif(FA), and G Hartley (RFA).

Furthermore their are a few Defensive FA's that would really look good in Black and Gold (hopefully we can afford one top tier upgrade): J Peppers, Wilfolk, Hampton, Dansby, Derrick Johnson and several other LBs.

My thoughts are that Thomas and Bell are true running backs that can wear down defenses. Thomas has the wiggle and Bell can run you over. Reggie adds a demension a a reciever in the passing game that the others do not. I love Reggie on draws and passes in the flats BUT, I am pretty sure his touches will be going down due to the productivity of the other two. Payton also is not forcing the ball to reggie like he has in the past. I would be willing to bet that before the year is up we see Reggie running the wildcat at some point. As far as next year lets just enjoy the ride we are on now.

When Mike Bell returns, he and Pierre will be the 1 and 1A backs and get the majority of touches. Reggie ... why bother discussing him any further. He's contributed very little and ball security remains an issue. His punt return decisions have been awful, costing the team valuable field position. His future this season? A back who comes in on obvious passing downs who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

Did you see Payton last night after Reggie's fumble cost the team a touchdown? Are you a good lip reader? I promise you ... the Coach was very displeased with Reggie. Like I said, it's almost pointless to consider him a vital part of the team any longer. I've really lost any hope of Reggie being an impact player for this team. Maybe the only way to grab his attention is for Payton to put him on the inactive list for a week or two and see how he responds. Lance Moore will not return a punt for a touchdown, but he won't make bone-headed decisions on whether to field punts or let the ball bounce 15-20 extra yards.

I hope Reggie likes the view from the bench because that's where he's going to spend a lot of his time.

To be honest, I'd prefer to not have a back with a single 100 yard game this year -- I'd rather see an 80 yard per game rusher and 50 yard per game rusher and 30 yard per game rusher every game. This will keep our backs healthy into the post-season.

Me too.

In this game of huge egos, it's rare that talented RB's are willing to share snaps. We need to take advantage of it while we can.
