What happens to Reggie when Mike Bell returns? (1 Viewer)

If his salary is really 13.6 million dollars next year then I agree he will have to take a HUGE pay cut or else he needs to be cut. We are going to have to pay Sharper more next year, and we will have to pay Evans (FA) and many of the following: P Thomas (RFA), L Moore (FA), K Clancy(FA), S. Fujita (FA), Usama Young (RFA), Roman Harper(FA), J Bushrod (RFA), Mike Bell (FA), Zach Streif(FA), and G Hartley (RFA).

Furthermore their are a few Defensive FA's that would really look good in Black and Gold (hopefully we can afford one top tier upgrade): J Peppers, Wilfolk, Hampton, Dansby, Derrick Johnson and several other LBs.

My thoughts are that Thomas and Bell are true running backs that can wear down defenses. Thomas has the wiggle and Bell can run you over. Reggie adds a demension a a reciever in the passing game that the others do not. I love Reggie on draws and passes in the flats BUT, I am pretty sure his touches will be going down due to the productivity of the other two. Payton also is not forcing the ball to reggie like he has in the past. I would be willing to bet that before the year is up we see Reggie running the wildcat at some point. As far as next year lets just enjoy the ride we are on now.

When Mike Bell returns, he and Pierre will be the 1 and 1A backs and get the majority of touches. Reggie ... why bother discussing him any further. He's contributed very little and ball security remains an issue. His punt return decisions have been awful, costing the team valuable field position. His future this season? A back who comes in on obvious passing downs who can catch the ball out of the backfield.

Did you see Payton last night after Reggie's fumble cost the team a touchdown? Are you a good lip reader? I promise you ... the Coach was very displeased with Reggie. Like I said, it's almost pointless to consider him a vital part of the team any longer. I've really lost any hope of Reggie being an impact player for this team. Maybe the only way to grab his attention is for Payton to put him on the inactive list for a week or two and see how he responds. Lance Moore will not return a punt for a touchdown, but he won't make bone-headed decisions on whether to field punts or let the ball bounce 15-20 extra yards.

I hope Reggie likes the view from the bench because that's where he's going to spend a lot of his time.

To be honest, I'd prefer to not have a back with a single 100 yard game this year -- I'd rather see an 80 yard per game rusher and 50 yard per game rusher and 30 yard per game rusher every game. This will keep our backs healthy into the post-season.

Me too.

In this game of huge egos, it's rare that talented RB's are willing to share snaps. We need to take advantage of it while we can.

It's just a matter of who will have the hot hand. (and sure hands)

When we have Bell, PT and Reggie to put in, we will just have a lot more choices and depending on what the defense keeps throwing at us, Payton will put in the players he thinks has the most advantage against that scheme/personnel.

I will root for Reggie as long as he is a Saint but I do not like his regression.

Thank you.

Reggie is a talented player, and doesn't need the constant excuses and apologies.

His role has been reduced, and unless he suddenly and unexpectedly improves his YPC up the middle, I can see him getting 10-12 touches per game, evenly split running/receiving.

Bell is our most dangerous option on straight runs, Pierre being real close if not tied. Pierre is our most dangerous option in space, because he has great hands, vision, and breaks all but the most solid tackles. Our most dangerous punt return man is probably not Reggie. I think it may be Harper or even Jenkins. What does that leave for Reggie? That leaves him speed. Although not nearly as fast and quick as he used to be, he still has it. Speed is a valuable NFL commodity in some instances. Some teams will sell their soul to get speed. It can create some favorable match ups, and gives us a few useful options.

The remaining question is, is any player that gets a dozen touches worth $13 mil per year? I'm thinking there are more productive uses for that much cap money.

You just saved me 15 minutes of thinking and 5 minutes of typing. Very well said.

is ther any way we can stop some of these thread. Like a automatic ban if you start any thread that deals with PT vs Reggie , or those kind of threads. People we are 4-0 can we just enjoy how the team is playing.

When will these Reggie thread stop!

1st round pick, High dollar salary, performance thus far. they should never stop. I chant REGGIE,REGGIE,REGGIE evertime he's back there for a punt return and I know he is due for a great game. But when I take my off black & gold colored glasses I feel its ok to question his performance and value to the team. I don't agree that we need to trade him or bench him but I feel its ok to discuss his performance. Its just what fans do. Maybe the question should be you think his break up with Kim is affecting him mentally? :mwink:

Go Saints! and Go Reggie.

Reggie's cap figure will be $13.5 Million next year so maybe you should get your facts before you post in all caps.

Reggie will be cut or he will restructure. End of story.

Edit to add: Here's Jeff Duncan (before the season and the emergence of Bell) addressing how Bush's salary will push him to the front burner this offseason as far as a difficult decision for the Saints front office: http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/messages/chrono/16600073

Under the current CBA, 2010 will be an UNCAPPED year. (And I almost never post in ALLCAPS.)

If Reggie moves enough merchandise and tickets to pay for himself, it really doesn't matter what his cap # is next year.

And IMHO, while he may not be what everyone wished a #2 overall pick would be, he definitely makes the team better, no question.

I understand your point. I think the question is, could the 13.5 mill be better spent if used elswhere?

The thing is, his cap number doesn't necessarily reflect what he will make next year. To a large degree it represents an allocation of money he has already received -- his signing bonus -- and his cap number could actually rise if some of that allocation gets accelerated, for instance if he is cut.

What he will actually make next year barring a renegotiation might be $8M, for example (I'm just using that as a for instance, I don't know the answer). He might actually bring in more than $8M in revenue.

I'll put my response in a multiple-choice format. If I have a toolbox, and that toolbox contains a hammer and a flat head screwdriver, then adding a Phillips head screwdriver will:

A) Allow me to throw away my hammer,
B) Cause me to throw away my Phillips head screwdriver and make do with the flat head,
C) Cause me to shop around for a cheaper flat head screwdriver,
D) Allow me always to have the right tool with me for the job at hand.

All three RBs have their benefits and their drawbacks; Bush's drawbacks may be more visible, but at least some of that is due to the scrutiny he undergoes (and has undergone since before he was drafted). Is Reggie more of a special-purpose player? Arguably, yes--but special-purpose is not the same as purposeless.

Yeah but in this case the Phillips head screwdriver obviously has had some unbelievably slick substance spilled on it that make's it fall out of your hand and stab you in the foot.

Bell will be on the bench as the third string running back, Reggie will get his 3-5 rushes a game and be in on 3rd downs (even after he fumbles the ball like yesterday) and Pierre Thomas be a featured back until he suffers and injury.

Just like I said last week, I was getting roasted for my belief that Reggie wouldn't carry the ball 200 times and that he would see equal carries as Thomas......He has 36 carries in 4 games when we have been down a running back in ALL four of them.....Bell and Pierre have not be on the same field yet. I can't see him with more than 5-7 rushing attempts a game, he will either fumble the ball away or get injured.

You guys realizle that if Pierre was healthy he would have more yards than anyone in the NFL, right?
