Question What More Must Taysom Hill Do Before He Retires To Be Considered An NFL Hall Of Fame Player? (16 Viewers)

Lol. 99 attempts for 2,477 yards. That's over 25 yards per carry. Every offensive coach we have ever had should be fired for not giving him the ball on every down.

Sorry. Joking. You have games played instead of rushing attempts in that list. He has 2,427 yards on 432 attempts for an average of 5.6 YPC. Which is still very good, but not 25 YPC good.

Anyway, you are right that Hill won't have the lifetime numbers for the HoF. He's 34 and he is not likely going to play long enough to get there. So, he would need something like a bunch of All-Pro nods and/or a bunch of Pro Bowl appearances to make the HoF. Alternatively if he was the main offensive weapon on a team that won a Super Bowl or two, that might get him in. But that seems unlikely at this point too.

In the end, he's a great player, but he's just not an NFL HoF player.
good catch!

He won't get in because selections now are just based on stats.
This.

We all know what he can do on the football field, but the rest of the league just considers him an oddity, a guy who was never good enough to earn Pro Bowl acclaim at any one position. You did make a good case in the OP though.

Don't think he has a chance to make it, not that he doesn't deserve to (in some respects).....had the Saints been contenders and he had a huge game in a NFCCG or a SB it would help his chances.....but at 34 his play is likely to decline soon and it will be tougher to stay healthy.....

I get the sentiment, there is just no other player like him.....but don't think that will be enough....

Devin Hester was inducted into the NFL HOF. He was a One Trick Pony. An Excellent Return Specialist. An ordinary average position player as a WR only.

He doesn't hold or share 36 NFL Records (and counting) as Taysom Hill does which are varying and unique.

Every NFL Record held by Devin Hester relates specifically to being a return specialist.

1. Most special teams touchdowns in a career: 20 ( 14 punts, 6 kickoffs, and 1 missed field goal.)

2. Most non-offensive TDs in a career: 20.

3. Most kickoff and punt return TDs in a career: 19.

4. Most punt return TDs in a career: 14.

5. Most punt return TDs in a season: 4 (2007)

6. Most kickoff return TDs for a game: 2 - Tied

7. Most combined return TDs in a season: 6 (2007, 2 kickoffs, 4 punts)

8. Most rookie combined return TDs in a season: 5 (2006, 3 punt, 2 kickoffs.)

9. Most combined return TDs in a game: 2 kickoffs (12/11/06), 1 punt, 1 kickoff (11/25/07)

10. Most non-offensive TDs in a season: 6, twice - 3 punts, 2 kickoffs, 1 missed field goal (2006), 4 punts, 2 kickoffs (2007)

11. Fastest TD in Super Bowl History: 14 seconds.

12. First Super Bowl opening kick returned for a TD: Super Bowl XLI, 92 yards.

The NFL Hall of Fame has broadened their scope of players deserving of induction. Devin Hester was just inducted into the NFL HOF in 2024.

It's not beyond reason that Taysom Hill will be considered to be inducted into the NFL HOF based on the many unique NFL Records he holds or shares.
Hester's return TD numbers are unlikely to get duplicated. The closest active player is Cordarrelle Patterson, with nine return TD's versus 20 for Hester. The closest in history was at 14 (Brian Mitchell).

You could argue that Hill's unique triple threat numbers are unlikely to be repeated, but that is more because a player will be dominant enough in a single role to keep getting the ball in that same role throughout most of their career. If Payton had abandoned the QB idea and used Hill similarly to how he is used now, he may have been able to rack up some numbers.

As it stands, Hill isn't in the career top 250 for rushing yards, receiving yards, or receiving TD's, and he is tied for 203rd for rushing TD's. I didn't even check passing because he won't be on those lists.

Without any big career numbers or awards, it's really hard to say he deserves to be there. Even a SBMVP might not help him, as the PFR HOF monitor doesn't even use that in their scoring (because single game records/awards aren't the ticket to the hall).

This Thread has a prefix: Question

This Thread Title asks a question: What More Must Taysom Hill Do Before He Retires To Be Considered An NFL Hall Of Fame Player?

In my OP in this thread at the bottom of my post I asked the following question:

What Other Individual Accomplishment(s) Does Taysom Hill Have To Achieve, If Any, Before He Retires, To Be Considered An NFL Hall Of Fame Player?

Most reply post have not attempted to answer the questions. Those posts only say why he won't be inducted into the HOF. (For the record, I respect those opinions.)

Several members have made an attempt to suggest what Hill must further accomplish to be considered an NFL HOF player. Props for answering the questions!

A few members have given the nod that he already deserves to be considered an NFL HOF player. 🤟

Thanks to all who have replied to this thread so far! For those that haven't replied yet, please attempt to answer the questions in your post.

I will put everyone on notice.
Taysom will be a first ballot HoF five years after he retires!
I know many of you will think it’s not happening but for the biggest reason possible he will be a she in! It’s how he affects the game from a defense point of view. There have been many great players that defenses have to game plan for, WR, RB, great QB but only one that has defenses disturbed completely when he is in the game.

All of the stats mentioned above will aid his trip there but there is no other player that gets the attention throughout the league then Taysome Hill.

He will be accepted not by position as the norm but as a complete football player! A special place for him and his Bust!

I think if he were more durable to be able to withstand the heavy load, and could have been a much more featured player the way we used him on Sunday, rather than keeping kid gloves on him for most of his career, he’d be in.

Probably too late though.

Out of curiosity, do you also believe that former Bills special teams ace Steve Tasker, who played for Buffalo from 1986-97, also belongs consideration into Canton? He was sorta his generation's version of Taysom Hill as this all-around "utility player"--Punt returner, special teams ace, occasional WR, back-up CB or DB from time-to-time. Didnt put up the same offensive numbers as Hill has, but he excelled in a wide range of positions that has made Hil unique and special.

Easley is 11th overall for DB's on PFR's Hall of Fame Monitor. His score is boosted by five pro bowls, three first team AP selections, and a DPOY award. Hill doesn't have those types of accolades on his resume.
Lets also keep in mind that if he hadn't had a pretty serious career (and potentially life-threatening) injury that forced his early retirement after the 1987 season, Easley easily plays another 4-5 seasons and retires in the early 90's with far more career INT's, deflected passes, tackles, and Pro-Bowl selections. I also think the Seahawks wouldve remained a more competitive, playoff-caliber team if he'd remained instead of their secondary and entire defense just collapsing by 1992 and it took that organization almost a decade, with a new owner, new HC, a near-relocation to Anaheim to remake itself into a perennial playoff contender.

Indeed, I predict the list of career highlights and awards for Taysom Hill will read much the same way Steve Tasker's does. Team-specific honors, but not Canton, Ohio......
