World Cup 2022 - Qatar (with SR Pick'Em league) (5 Viewers)

Totally agree on the run up.

For so many years the thought was a power run up and smash, you have less control due to focus/leg fatigue.

I was always opposite...either I'm making or blocked but keeper gonna pay for it.
I played with a goal keeper who had Mexican national team experience (way way back - too many moons ago to count). After stoning a PK in a big game he told me there really is a lot of psychology and even some culture that goes into defending PKs. I still believe this is true.

Dont rely solely on confirmation bias Neymar and Lewandowski buried their PKs with slow run-ups, hops, and skips.

I did not, I labored over the pick but ultimately decided Spain should win. Whoops.

A lot of contentious history between the Spanish and the Berbers. Not all of it distant.
I have Morocco in our office draw. I actually called before picking them. I have them inmy bracket beating Portugal, but not advancing past France. But I will still root for them.

They have only given up 1 goal throughout the cup.

They crushed their qualifying process 20 goals to 1 in the Qualifying Group stage.

No FIFA cup team came out of the group stage with more points than Morocco (including France and Brazil with less group stage points) which tells you how good the groups are in 2022.

The last time they lost was in June (to surprisingly the US). Im a little disappointed that the FOX commentator teams were less prepared for them to arrive as a Dark Horse winner.

Glad they progressed and I think the take away here should be that the US is not as far behind as a Netherlands knockout would make it seem. We are on a competitive path along with many national teams rising to the level of European/South American soccer.

I think the largest obstacle for the USMNT is not finding more talent for the roster in the next 4 years (we will do that). The real obstacle is finding competitive matches to play to keep us sharp (the downside to a free bid for 4 years).

Totally.

I think it actually boils down to an individual and his mental make up.

I was too "thinky" - therefore, to take the "thinking" out, it was a pretty fast run up. Selected side and went after it. Didnt look at keeper at all. Either he was guessing right and saving or not. And i didnt possess 1/5th of the skill these guys have.

At this level, the skill these guys possess along with the confidence, i really think the mental make-up is what breaks the player in that moment.

Its absolutely true and why you saw Bono speaking to the 2nd PK taker just to remind him that " i know where you are going" - make him think lol.

See USMNT thread- apparently we are locked into playing Copa America. That should help.

Lewandowski didn’t (at first) it looked as bad as any of the Japanese attempts did
And Neymar is kind of the point- you have to be at a Neymar level of skill AND confidence to make that effective
The other way seems like it gives WAY too much time to think/2nd guess

Welp Qatar worked out for one player...

CR 7 signs a 2.5 yr deal worth $200,000,000 PER YEAR ( soooo 1/2 BILLION for 2.5 years )

my word.

figures.

US
LSU
Saints
and now Swiss.

Terrible defending but whatever.

I thought Neymar's PK was really bad actually, it was hit ridiculously slow to the point that I think the keeper can actually just run over to it if he doesn't guess on the run up but that's kind of the point of those silly run ups I suppose, to get the keeper to commit before you even touch the ball. A keeper with more confidence in himself might've really embarrassed Neymar but I'm not even sure he tries that against someone else.

If you're the Portugal manager, if they hold the 2 goal lead or score more, do you bring in Renaldo as a sub in the 2nd half or let him rest?

Edit: 4-0 now.

My son had a love/hate relationship with PKs. He loved having the chance to score for the team, but hated the possibility of letting them down. Between club and high school, he was in about 4 PK situations, including the 2nd round of the playoffs last year. And none of those 4 times did we feel the excitement of winning. :(

Penalty kicks, much like overtimes, are punishment for not being able to win the game in regulation .
