Yeah ok it’s one game but we need to re-sign Chase Young and Payton Turner (1 Viewer)

If going forward Rizzi can bring that same focused coordinated effort in all three phases, then by default, that means that we have the players. Rizzi said that everything and everyone will be re-looked at. But imo yesterday, CY and PT both looked like they belonged on the Saints going forward. And we need them to belong considering our financial situation. TBH, I can understand the Saints fumbling around with the win yesterday and not icing it. They were used to losing. But now that they’ve won, hopefully they get used to winning, and we see steady improvement going forward, building a highly confident team.

I need to see more of what they did yesterday with the remaining games left.

Sweet, okay. Then what's the plan? Free agency?

1. Upgrades in FA are going to be more expensive. Much more expensive.

2. Effective replacements in FA (same output) are as expensive or much more for pass rushers.

3. Take a chance on a FA coming off of a rookie contract. Vikings took an expensive chance on Davenport. Upside side and youth is still expensive.

Draft?
Yes, you could hit on a DE, but if you don't then it's the same issue we're seeing on the offensive line. Too much risk to rely on solely.

I say cut Foskey loose who has shown nothing. Save your money and keep Young, Turner. Draft BPA every round.
Its probably going to take us 2 more years to fix the D line imo. I am pretty sure you are thinking the same.

Have you not been watching him the past two games? He has finally started showing up and making plays.
Enlightened me... What play? The sack yesterday was caused by a lineman tripping on himself. Other than that name another please.

You don’t keep underperforming players just bc of numbers. Plus, we don’t even know who the next HC will be, with also not knowing who the DC will be or defensive scheme. Are we all just assuming that we will run the same defense?

Well of course that'll all be taken into account, but at the end of the day pass rushers are needed to get to the QB.

My point is because the Saints currently own their rights, it'll be cheaper for them to keep them versus shelling out equal money for inferior players or much more money for better players. Under no circumstances are the Saints getting better DEs for equal or less money than they're paying now except when it comes to Foskey. The other option is the draft. The team can't wait until the draft to make decisions about personnel at DE. It's too important.

In an ideal world the Saints would go into free agency and just buy the best DEs available. They can't do that. Talent in the Saints price range just doesn't come available at DE unless it's a Young type situation or a Davenport situation. So trade our underwhelming DEs for different more expensive underwhelming DEs?

All of you singing the praises of Chase Young are insane!!! He's that same guy with the motor that runs like its running on 80 octane fuel.

I agree with this take. We cant afford to go on a spending spree. We can only hope that Rizzi turns it around and he gets more out of the players. Then we re-sign them. Go watch that CY sack at the end, he went pure beast mode on that OT.

If someone signs Young to a big contract shouldn’t we get a decent comp pick out of it next year ?

These are Peyton Turner's career stats. And now in his contract year he is barely below average. How many players have we've seen do this? Be hurt, play terrible. Have that contract year boost. Sign the contract and then revert to normal?

Leonard Floyd signed for $10 million. Chase signed for $13 million. Floyd has always been a better player and he’s producing more currently. Calais Campbell’s old behind signed for $2 million and is doing slightly better than Chase.
Dante Fowler has 8.5 sacks on the year. Signed for $3.25 million.
Are you sure you want to go down this road?
The goal is to spot the talent. Not overpay with hopes that they will shed a bust label

I agree that it makes no sense to just get rid of all of your DEs except Granderson with the expectation that you will be able to get better for less in free agency. We tried that at DT and it did not work and it would be much harder to do at DE.

IMO, you keep Young on a reasonable deal for a starting DE. He has flashed the potential he always had and has been at worst solid. He has a lot of pressures but does not get home enough. But, at least he is getting pressure and I think the change in philosophy will help him going forward. And, as already mentioned, he has a void year on his contract so you actually save some money by brining him back.

I'm not as sold on brining Turner back. IMO he just hasn't flashed enough to justify it and his injury history is a major concern. I think you might be able to upgrade him with a cheapish free agent that costs the same or less.

I would, however, bring back Kpassagnon once he is healthy. He's a solid veteran that sets the floor for the DE position. You are okay at DE with Granderson, Young, and Kpassagnon. And I think that is what this should all be about. Set your floor as high as possible at DE and then hope that he right DE falls to you in the draft but don't force a DE pick because you have to draft one which is likely what would happen if the only DE you keep is Granderson.

As far as Foskey, I would like to see him with another DL coach or possibly in a different scheme but he would be on my bubble in camp.

Older players like that are usually chasing rings. Those guys, outside of Fowler, took less money for a shot at a ring ring. Those kinds of players aren't likely to sign here and hitting on the right ones is harder than you make it sound. Just because you can in retrospect find guys that signed for less but were more productive doesn't mean those guys are easy to find in the moment. If it was that easy then everyone would do that instead of paying big money for DEs or drafting DEs with high round picks.

And as I noted above, we tried to find those value players at DT and as a result we are much worse at DT than we were before.

This fanbase over-reacts a little much huh? Rizzi has his first press conference, extend the man. Payton Turner gets his first sack, extend the man. Chase Young makes one of his first plays of the season, extend the man. I know the word fan comes from fanatic but can we pump the breaks a bit?

Agreed. They've all earned recognition and "attaboys" for showing us something we hadn't seen before. Rather than extend, how about asking "can you do that again"? "how frequently"? and followed up with a "show me!"
