Triplett says Saints Interest in Chris "Beanie" Wells is "Bona Fide"

So, would drafting a guy like Wells make PT the new Stecker?

In regards to special teams, I would assume so. Pierre is golden on kick returns. Roby showed some speed as well.

it's been said before but you can get a rb in any round. #1 offense last year and they are worried about a rb in the first round, has to be a smoke screen. no pass rush last year, no playmaker at OLB, and back 4 was very suspect.

Pierre Thomas had one of the best success rates in the league for picking up first down. try again.

I'd need to see some stats on that. Reggie has a good 3rd down conversion ratio. I don't know about PT.

If we got Wells, who will be trade bait - PT or Reggie? I can't see any of these being a 3rd string back. We will have Bell, PT, RB, Hamilton and Wells.

I am more curious about the TE postion. We have 6 on the roster. Who stays and who goes?

The Saints will neither trade Reggie nor Pierre if they draft Wells.

But we are not the Giants. SP loves to pass the ball. That would be a lot of money in 3 backs with one or two of them just sitting on the bench. I just wish they would make the switch and make Reggie a WR.

That's not a lot of money. Wells would be on a cap-friendly rookie deal and it is not like Pierre is making a grip. We managed Reggie and Deuce's deal. Even with Wells, the Saints would be paying he and Pierre less against the cap than what Deuce would have counted against the cap this year. Also, it is no different than having over $200 million committed to the D-line. So are you saying that if the Saints chose Everette Brown or Aaron Maybin, you would object?

Reggie will not be moved to WR.

Payton will always run a pass oriented offense. that is his style, its not going to change. and there is no reason for it to change, considering the offensive success he's had with that approach. The Giants rushed the ball over 100 times more than the Saints did last season. The Giants offense is based on the run. The Saints offense is based on the pass. The Giants needed to use 3 backs because they run the ball way more than we do. with PT averaging 4.8 ypc there is no reason to take the ball out of his hands, but that is exactly what would happen if we select Wells. just does not seem like the smartest use for our number 1 pick, considering the problems we have on defense and the superiority of our offense.

The Saints will be a pass-oriented team, you're right. But they would like to get closer to that 55/45% pass-run ratio they were at in 2006 and not the 61/39% pass-run ratio you have seen the last two years.

Take the Best player available. Thats what Loomis will do. Look at his record:
2004
1. We took Will Smith and we already had darren Howard and Charles Grant. Majority of boadr wanted the next corner who Chris Gamble who was taken 10 picks later. Will Smith was great value.
2005
1. We took Jammal Brown and the board went nuts that we didnt take Derrick Johnson but Brown was rated much higher than Thomas Davis and Derrick Johnson. Brown great value
2006
1. Reggie Bush. Some wanted to trade with the Jets and take D'brick and Mangold but Bush was the best on our board.

Im so tired of this. When you have several backs that can't get 1 yard maybe there needs to be some changes on the offensive line. Its clear that we can't get any push....... and if anything should change to help the run, it should be that first.

IF (and this is a huge "if") we could trade back far enough, I wouldn't be opposed to picking OC Alex Mack with a late first round pick.

look at DVOA and DYAR statistics from football outsiders. PT was one of the most successful backs in the NFL at getting first downs. If you think Reggie is better than PT at getting first downs on the ground, i am convinced you do not watch Saints football.

I'm talking about 3rd and shorts, and since I don't watch Saints football I guess I dreamt PT getting stuffed at the line at Washington when we needed a 1st down.

Getting first downs when we're ahead is a lot different than getting 1st downs when we need them in crunch time. But my opinion really doesn't matter. Obviously Payton himself isn't satisfied with PT if he is entertaining the idea of getting Beanie Wells in a few weeks, so express your frustrations to the Saints F.O.

This is going to be one polarizing pick this year. People are going to be upset unless we take Jenkins. I think he's probably the guy that people whine about the least.

i guess you were asleep during the many other times that PT did come up with the conversion. you probably were also dreaming when Reggie got stuffed at the line on third and short in Denver, fumbled the ball, and it was returned for a touchdown.

If I remember correctly. PT had like 8/12 in 3rd and shorts..RB was 5/12 or 6/12 in 3rd and shorts. I'll search for the exact stats. We remember the failures the most because they came in crucial/clutch situations.

Like I said, Payton is willing to take Beanie, so he's obviously not happy with the running game as is. So it's just something we'll all have to accept eventually if it happens.
