N/S Biggest choke artists of all-time (#1 on page 8) (1 Viewer)

That is not a choking moment.

Also, I had no problem with what Turley did. Aaron Brooks was down, his legs were pinned under a defender then the Jets LB was pulling at his facemak bending him backwards.

Seriously could have hurt Brooks if Turley didn't step in and kick his ***!

It has to be one of the biggest meltdowns in NFL history. He was a complete madman

I don’t know if its because who the QB was, but if it was Drew being mistreated the way Brooks was being mistreated by Jets LB, half the team would go Apeshirt and I don’t think anyone would claim they were in a meltdown foe defending Brees.

Payton Manning's interception throw to Tracy Porter seems big,
Big, for sure. That said, I think the truest litmus test for a choke is when you are leading, not trying to come from behind, and you lose it. The Saints were leading the Colts by 7. Even with a successful TD drive there, Brees was going to (most likely) have a very good chance to put the Saints in position to win the game on the last play.
I'm no Peyton homer. I don't think he is the GOAT and will argue Drew over Manning all day, every day. But in that moment, the Saints held all the cards. They had the lead by a full TD and had time on their side. Porter could jump the route because even giving up a double move for a TD meant giving Brees 3+ minutes to go get a FG.

Was the play game changing? Most certainly. That play changed the outcome probability of the game from 65-35 to 99.5-0.5, or something like that I would imagine. But a massive choke? Maybe, maybe not. Now, had the Colts been up 7 or 3 in the same scenario and he threw a pick, then that is absolutely a choke of monumental proportions.

Or if they were tied and sitting dead in FG range with a chance to go to the Super Bowl and had 19 other options that were all reasonable and instead chose to throw across his body back into the middle of the field, or something like that. That would be a HUGE choke.

But nobody would really do that, would they?

Well, right now, sure.

The past three years are something else. I think that you would be hard pressed to find a collection of more unique and heartbreaking season finishes three years in a row. It's pretty incredible actually. The fact that we have fans interested in this season shows great resiliency.

You really could back this statement all the way up to 2010.

:hihi: It was that your recency bias was....recent.

Jackie Smith's dropped pass, Cowboys versus Steelers, Super Bowl XIII

I know many people who feel that this moment should be higher on the list. I personally think that this is the worst drop pass in the history of the NFL. The ball hit him in the numbers and it’s almost like he completely forgot how to move his body with the ball approaching him. It was also an ENORMOUS moment in the Super Bowl. I think that this one is hurt a bit because it is an old moment and not everyone was around to see it. Also, who exactly is Jackie Smith? Most of the names on this list are players that the average football fan would know even if there wasn’t a dramatic choke job associated with them.

but that blitz pickup:clapbig:

Tough one there for a HOF TE. I mean, even though this is before WR turned TE's were a thing, this guy caught what, 500+ passes in the NFL. He kinda knew what he was doing.

And instead of tied 21-21 after 3 quarters, we end up with the Steelers having the ball, up 21-17 and they would go on to score a TD that drive to get to 28-17 and take almost complete control of the first Super Bowl to feature a rematch.

If Smith catches the ball, it doesn't even come close to ensuring a different outcome of the game, but it does alter the entirety of that 4th quarter, which most likely would have been one for the ages.

And yeah, great pass pro by the RB there!

Difficult not to consider Andy Dalton -- 0-4 in playoff games, 57.2 passer rating, one TD, 6 INTs, 3 offensive TDs total.

With pretty good defenses backing him up.

Sorry, but that's not an accident.
