Real Estate Agents and Builders to stop using the terms “master bedroom” and “master bathroom” (1 Viewer)

The word master existed long before slaves were brought to America. So it didn't have it's roots in slavery.

You do know I was talking about American slavery right? It's right there in my post.
Not the way you initially wrote it. But I think that IF the root of the word is slavery period, folks wanted it gone. Ya dig? That's the gist of what I was getting at.

You do know that slavery existed before the US was established, right?
Again, the word is derived from magister in Latin and old English and has nothing at all to do with slavery. No more than a masters degree or a horse master or master helmsman or master chief or martial arts master or masters golf tournament or any other word with master in it, other than slave master.

I get it and point out many more examples, master and apprentice, master and student, mastery of of language. I am ONLY saying that if Master's Quarters or master bedroom has a history in slavery, then it should be removed. That's my only point.

Understood.

Let me ask this:
When you "master" a skill then what are you going to call it now?

Postmaster
Quartermaster
Masterpiece
Mastermind
Harbor master
Scout master
Masterful
Shopmaster
Webmaster

None of these words have anything at all to do with slavery.

That's why nobody is calling for the words in your list to be renamed. Master has multiple definitions. "Master" as in to perfect a craft has no roots in slavery. "Master" as in the master of the house and the master bedroom (vs. the servants' quarters) has roots in slavery.

I understand what you're getting at, but I dont know the source of the quoted part of your post. The word master existed long before slaves were brought to America. So it didn't have it's roots in slavery.

That said, I stated I don't really know where we are in terms of whether the word should be discontinued. If it should be, then by all means let's get rid of it. I just think we should make sure that's the right call. That's all I'm saying.

The quoted part was my attempt to paraphrase the way it's been explained to me. I think I did the general gist of it justice, but who knows. It's not something I have experience with, being a white man.

And I'm with you, I don't feel super strongly about this one particular instance. But it's just one of those things that removing the word removes zero value to society. I think a utilitarian approach is best for this one - greatest good for the greatest number of people.

How many people is keeping the word good for: zero

How many people is removing it good for: no idea, but it's more than zero.

Ergo, get rid of it.

I guess the question i have is whether there's a movement to get rid of it. Is it just one, or a few people raising it, or a significant number of them? I'm just curious because I hadn't heard of this before this thread.

Yeah, who knows. I've never heard it before, and keep in mind that it was only changed by the Houston Realtor Association. Article said it had been broached a few times over the years, so it wasn't spontaneous. For all we know it was an issue raised by one realtor who might have been some white dude.

The ironic part is that this is a flash point issue that's probably going to make a lot of people angry which will create a bunch of internet conversations which will force every city's board of realtors to address it which means it'll eventually become commonplace. The outrage will bring it to the forefront.

Master of the house is not "rooted" in slavery as I've repeatedly pointed out.
