When you had Brees, Brady, P. Manning, and Rodgers all playing at the same time, it was fairly easy to fill out the layer cake-type chart of elites, second-tier, and third- or bottom-tier QBs. It's not so easy now, with those greats all retired now. Mahomes, Burrow and Jackson come the closest to deserving the elite title at present. Allen and Herbert are second-tier. Rodgers is still around but he's about done.

Carr is solidly a second-tier QB, as he's been throughout his career. Fits the MO of second-tier, which is he needs "healthy help" to win consistently. The help hasn't been healthy this year, as seen with the injuries on the o-line and WR.

I don't know if it was rust or not, but it's the pattern of Carr's career. He usually has 2 or 3 great games, 2 or 3 bad games, and the rest middle of the road each season.

There's definitely a pattern of play in Carr's first week coming back from injury. We saw it four times last year. And when he's fully healthy like the last six weeks of last year when he was the highest rated QB in the NFL and the first two weeks of this year. Also our record is pretty outstanding in games he starts and finishes. And terrible in games he misses or gets knocked out of.

The funny thing is that I think except for a few outliers who are convinced Carr is terrible and on the other side who are convinced Carr is elite, most of us agree on what Carr is, it's just that we are quibbling over if he should be called mediocre, good, or very good. Dude has been in the NFL for 11 years at this point he's the player he is. We are just arguing semantics.

Yeah, it's only relevant if I think someone is a good QB and want to prove it. But the guys I don't like? QBR is totally irrelevant.

True, but Carr becomes straight up garbage if things aren't 100 percent perfect. That's the only way anybody can win with Carr is if you protect him like you have the Cowboys OL from the 90s or whoever had the best OL in history.

I think Carr is ok. He is maybe the 15th best QB in the league. It's really hard to differentiate between 2nd tier QBs. 10th through 20th all looking about the same.

But I remember Emory Hunt saying Carr should be the worst QB in the league. It's because the league is so bad at developing QBs that he is middle of the pack. He didn't mean that Carr is terrible, just that so many other teams don't have anyone at all.

I had the same thought process, but indeed that second tier is fairly large these days, when you consider the top tier isn't as large as it once was.

Allen would indeed be near the top of the list of names on it, whereas Carr would be down the line. Unless and until Allen's Bills can somehow overcome the Chiefs in a playoff game, he'll remain second tier.

I mean Allen had a total shootout with Mahomes in the playoffs a few years ago. Wasn't his fault that they didn't win.

I guess I get your point if you define elite as guys with huge talent that have won a Super Bowl, but to me an elite QB is a guy that can consistently lift his team on his shoulders to get a win and who can get his team to the Superbowl even if things aren't perfect. Allen can or does do that. Carr doesn't really do that so I would put him and Allen in different tiers. Whether that puts Allen in the 2nd tier and Carr in the 3rd tier I don't know, but IMO they don't belong in the same tier of QBs.
