Saints to interview Aaron Glenn on Jan. 10th [Nick Underhill: Glenn probably gets an in person 2nd interview in a couple of weeks] (1 Viewer)

They were terrible when he took over and have become good. The stats this year are reflective of a lot of injuries and despite those injuries they are still a good defense.

They are 20th in total defense

30th in pass defense, 6th against the run. The 6th against the run is a bit misleading. They rank 22nd in YPC against. They are 27th in yards per play.

Teams dont really run on them much because they cant defend the pass. They give up 4.5ypc. They arent a wall against the run. They just are a faucet against the pass.

How about Jeff Hafley, the Packers Def Coordinator? Their defense made a big jump this year, and before that he was the head coach for Boston College for 4 years, 3 of which led them to bowl games, which is pretty good for Boston College. He also led the Cleveland Browns to no 1 in passing defense as their defensive back coach.

"Part of a staff that helped guide the Browns to No. 1 league rankings in 2014 in opponent passer rating (74.1) and opponent completion percentage (57.1) while finishing No. 2 in the NFL in interceptions with 21, the team's highest total since 2008."

They have had at least 12 defensive players on IR and they're still 7th in points allowed. That's overachieving IMO.

What do you base your opinion that probability says its highly unlikely? What numbers support that position?

We just gave you 3 or 4 HoF QBs, one that is arguably the GOAT, that developed under defensive head coaches. And at least two of them won Super Bowls with their defensive HC in charge. And one of them won 7 Super Bowls. And Matt Ryan would have one if they had not blown a 28-3 lead to another QB that was developed by a defensive HC.

The fact you want numbers is silly. You go back around 30 years to name a few when the league and its rules were vastly different. Roethlisberger was developed by Cower more then Tomlin, but the point still stands. Name 1 franchise QB developed in the last 10 years by a defensive head coach. Name 1 defensive head coach that has gone to the superbowl in the last 10 years.

The simple truth is the trend is that offensive head coaches develop franchise QBs, and offensive head coaches win superbowls for the last 10 or so years. People who invest against the trend in stocks, crypto, real estate etc end up in bankruptcy far more often then not. The probabilities are the same here.

Never bet against the trend. Glenn coming here will likely not end up in the superbowl for his tenure here. If I gambled, thats where the smart money bet would be based on trends.

Cant argue with that. If he can overachieve with a bunch of injuries. This is absolutely the place for him.

I still think we need to go offensive minded. Glenn doesnt give Allen dolt vibes at least. There was nothing about Allen that was HC material. I just want the HC to have more control over his team. Which is why I want Glenn to have multiple teams interested, so he can negotiate some power away from Loomis.

Like that's ever going to happen. You take the offer or go somewhere else. Mickey will have other options too.

There is also this from DerrickB's article:

  • 2020 (Before Glenn): 2.95 points allowed per drive
  • 2021: 2.52
  • 2022: 2.28
  • 2023: 2.03
  • 2024: 1.91
Points allowed per drive and DVOA posted by Rouxble are probably a better measure that PPG allowed or rushing or passing yards per game. Glenn has done a great job this year considering their injuries they have had this year.

I'm not sure that Glenn is some amazingly innovative defensive mind, and I'm not even sure he's the best HC candidate, but he has improved Detrot's defense greatly so he is very good on his side of the ball. But, I think it's his leadership skills and ability to build a team culture, that are the best argument for him to get the job.
