2024 Tropical Weather Thread (2 Viewers)

So entergy website showed us green around 1 now it’s back to red so going to drive to the house soon to check it out.

Not sure if it’s technically ‘tropical weather’ but I saw a water spout when I was on the Causeway this morning
It seemed like it was way over by the spillway

It did raise the question about safety- it doesn’t seem like they’re particularly dangerous- the wind is pulling water up, right? A bridge is going to be a barrier to the water, right?

There are two types of water spouts.
1. Tornadic waterspout. This has the same processes as a tornado, the only difference is they are over water instead of land. These can be extremely dangerous just like a tornado. In fact, one of the biggest tornadoes I have ever seen was on I-55 near Manchac, easily a 2 mile wide tornado over the lake. Luckily it weakened and was much smaller as it crossed over I-55.

2. Fair weather waterspouts. These typically form on the edge of developing convection. They barely move, are mostly translucent and tend to be quite weak. I wouldn't want to drive through one on a motorcycle on the causeway or get hit by one on a sailboat but other than that, pretty much harmless.

When I was stationed in Goula years ago, we had one come ashore and damage a lot of buildings and cars that were in the parking lots at Ingalls.

Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.
I was witness to that massive one on Grand Isle some years back, that thing looked like something from the pits of hell. It came ashore next to the camp we were in, caused damage but I thought it would be worse.
