Britney Griner released 12-08-2022 (2 Viewers)

I wouldn't say I'm not blessed, but I'm not 200K for 6 months of work blessed.

Its all relative. If you are living well and healthy, its really all that matters.

( oh and the WNBA season is 4 mo ;) )

Obviously we all wanted her to come home. Nobody is arguing against that.

Not everyone.. when BG‘s name came up in a conversation with my boss a few months ago, he said to me , and i quote: “I hope she rots”…. He said he had a problem with the fact that she had spoken out against America previously .. so becuase this woman had less than an ounce of hash oil, and held different political beliefs than my boss- he believes that she deserves to do 10 years or more in a Russian gulag labor camp… and im guessing that he is far from the only person who thinks that way…. Granted, my boss is a filthy piece of human debris, but i am unfortunately not independently wealthy, and i need my job so i bit my tongue when he said that.. incidentally, after New Years i plan to start answering recruiters’ phone calls and make career a move, but for other reasons .

I'm very familiar with that sentiment being expressed by others.

Shame on him. It should go without saying that we want every American home.

The issue is with who we gave up.

Yup, plenty of people out there saying "Can we send over the Merchant of Death in exchange for them keeping Griner? HAWHAWHAWHAW!"

So all opinions aside about the rightness or wrongness of the trade, I wonder if there's any feeling on earth quite like the one she had getting in that car, safely out of Russian custody. I can't imagine an orgasm, a lottery win, even cheating death that would compare. Maybe the doctor saying "oops, we were wrong about that whole brain tumor thing" might come pretty close. I'm a little sad that I will never experience the level of pure joy that comes from going from the prospect of a lifetime of misery (let's be honest, she ain't living out 9 whole years there) to the confirmation that it's over. Damn.

Great point.

You say that but let's also not kid ourselves that you wouldn't have just as many saying similar things had it been a political, media or prominent figure on the opposite end of the political spectrum. People in general just have a difficult time seeing past their own ideology. His boss probably just sees her as someone who "hates America, so why would we want her back?" I quote because it's something I've heard as well.

Personally, I hope this experience gives her a greater appreciation for her country and I'm glad that it's finally over for her. But I also agree that who we gave up is extremely problematic. And if he goes back to what he was doing before, then I hope everyone really comprehends what that cost means.

Hooray, now she can get back to her life playing basketball & he can get back to his...
Yeah, he is not getting back into anything. For the remainder of his life the most sure way the world over to get an arms deal busted will be directly, indirectly, tangentelly, or in any way otherwise involving Viktor Bout.

There are going to be files kept on what he eats, how many steps he takes an hour, and how many times he sneezes.

Besides, his contacts are outdated and/or burned by now, and he has been released, not pardoned. He sets foot outside of Russia and he will find many nations with waiting jail cells.

I never thought she should rot or do 9 years for such a ridiculous thing. All this does is further solidify the very popular view of American ignorance. American ignorance is a very popular belief in a lot of countries. She was a guest in their country, even if you're going there for a job. She had to know Russia isn't some paragon of excellence, any American goofing off there is gonna get the book thrown at them harder than the locals. I don't think she's very smart about the world outside of the USA, especially given the timing of her arrest. The reality of the situation is we're involved in a proxy war against Putin's regime which probably didn't help her at all.

I think her return home was inevitable but I don't like what we gave up inexchange for her. The Broncos no longer have made the worst trade in 2022. No matter how you slice it, that merchant of death is a horrible person.

Thank you for wording exactly how I feel. Amazing post.
