Comic Book Talk (3 Viewers)

Anybody else hear about the drama at C2E2 this past weekend? Apparently an exhibitor/vendor was selling bootleg books and CGC graded them 9.9 and 10. They're catching serious flack on their own forums.

The sight of a 9.9 is a red flag. A 10 is a flashing sign that says fraud

Wow, did they have the rookies grading books or something?

The theory is that they had an inside at CGC. No way Marvel signed off on something like this though.

An easier summary of the situation with confirmation that it wasn't approved by Marvel. Apparently, this place is stunning two more of these bootleg variants this weekend in Boston.

There's talk that it's a lot more than 367 books.

Yeah. I read about this the other day. This might ruin CBCS beyond repair; a major chain of custody situation. But this is what happens when you let the one guy who really knew the business and ops prior to Beckett buying them out jump ship to an online comic book retailer (he's now at MyComicShop.com). And what will kill them further is their efforts to act like everything's ok. I consistently get emails from them about doing this and that. Their days might be numbered.

A big claim will probably make it impossible for them to get insurance.

Wow, how are you not able to find that many books? Man, that looks bad in all sorts of ways. Sounds like they're not too concerned, though. Wow.

So Joshua Williamson is going to be writing Superman in the near future. I remember reading his stuff in the Flash a while back. I've dropped DC for about the last year or so, though. I wonder if this might be something that will be worth checking out.

I've basically dropped everything from the big 2 at this point. They're 90's market collapse levels of bad for me at this point, except without the car crash factor that makes some of that stuff so bad it's good. Sad but lots of great indie stuff out there.

Hanging out in Columbus, Ohio this weekend (they're still salty about last weekend) for GalaxyCon. Main target for me after spending an hour listening to Jim Shooter tell a few history stories was to meet Denys Cowan, one of Milestone Comics' founders.

He signed a bit of my Milestone stuff, including a copy of the first Milestone Compendium that came out earlier this year. He showed me the cover that he just finished for the second one that's coming out soon and it looks awesome. Wish I could've snapped a photo, but of course, reasons.

Needless to say it looks great. Icon and Superman (among others) graces the cover.

Just found out that And Books, Too (the comic shop in Lafayette) will be closing in the next couple of months. The owners are retiring. I'm bummed because I've been visiting that shop since I was a teenager. The kids and I are definitely going to have to make a trip there one last time.

I visited it once earlier this year and was only saddened that I could not find anything I needed. Nice store in a nice location.

That sucks. It was always a great store. Went there many times over the years when I was passing through.

They are apparently having a 25% off everything sale starting next Tuesday (Jan. 3). Might make the drive and see if I can score anything and to visit one last time.
