Comic Book Talk (3 Viewers)

Man, I remember when #75 (the death issue, black polybag) came out. Idiot who owned an LCS back then speculated the damn price of that book to $75 by the day the book came out. The backlash, rightfully so IMO, put him out of business. If that thing is worth $150 in mint condition (9.8) I would be shocked. The white bagged (Adventures of Superman #500) is worth less.
I have that #500. Lol. So that's worth a little something, heh. Haven't even opened it yet.

I bought several copies, one to read the rest to keep in mint condition thinking each one would one day be worth a million dollars

I think everyone, including people who didn't even read comics, bought multiple copies of that book.
And this is why it doesn't have value, even today.

I see it all of the times at cons I go to. People digging through what are typically $1 bins scavenging for #1 issues of anything just because. They're marks for vendors who know just how to talk them out of their money.

I've got like five issues of X-Men 2099 #1 in a long box somewhere that I will sell to these people for the low price of $100 a pop. 🔥deal! Can't be beat! They'd be robbing ME blind!

I never collected just for the possibility of a book growing in value. I was all about the stories. However, there were a few books I bought multiples of just on the chance they would go up in value. After the speculator crash in the mid to late 90's, I gave up on that. Now, I usually will just grab a trade.

It's maddening now. There's an app at the center of the speculation business now. A rumor of a TV show/movie/whatever, it's posting and telling folks to get this book or that book. And people subscribe to it. They live by it.

Sun and I (at least I think it's our Sun) are a part of this comic collectors Discord server where some live by that app. The focus is off of the Big 2 these days (unless there's some announcement) and are keying in on the indie titles now since the do lower print runs.

Case in point, I have been following the series Black by Kwanza Osajyefo. It's its own universe in which only black people have super powers. Well this latest series was announced, titled White, and it was announced to have a print run of only 2,500 copies each issue. The app went crazy with speculation. There was a total of over 40,000 requests for the first issue. I eventually went digital with the series. The first issue (first printing) was at $150 at cons late last year. It was at FanExpo Dallas for $30. I can't explain how it (speculation) hasn't crashed more.

Yeah, I have a few thousand in storage that are, at least, near mint or good condition, but I don't even see the point in trying to sell them. You and Sun would know more about the market than I would, but I feel like it crashed years ago, for the most part. I'm just glad I cashed in my Marvel trading cards while that was still a thing. I traded in multiple duplicate hologram cards to pay for what was sitting in my pull list.

I have the black bag, as well. I believe they printed those things into the ground, though, so they're not exactly scarce. For me, they aren't about the money. It just brings me back to a time before I had much to worry about.
My favorite LCS owner and I discuss this a lot. I collect Captain America, Black Widow, Winter Soldier, and The Falcon. Most issues are worth less than the cover price. But, I buy what I like, and not what I think will be valuable. With a few exceptions, anything from the 90's is worthless. Just use ebay to see what each issue is selling for.

I was able to find an affordable copy of Captain America number 48 and made an offer today. I'm waiting for a response. I never thought that I'd have a complete copy of a world war II era book. It's a cgc slabbed, "restored" book because the cover was re-attached but I'm good with that. This is the final Timely Comics appearance of Steve Rogers.

Damn, thats a great find. Hopefully your offer gets accepted.

I'm hopeful, but skeptical. A sub $500 CGC slabbed 2.0 graded book from 1945 probably won't happen.
Yeah. That's a very tight window unless the seller really wants to get rid of it. Hoping you can score it.

Guess this can go here

If this happened the internet would explode

It should actually go in the Flash movie thread. This has nothing to do with comic books.

Done

Didn’t realize there was a thread
