Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (2 Viewers)

For those of you with SlingTV (or thinking about SlingTV) the new AirTV box is out now. It integrates OTA programming with SlingTV programming, plus access to the usual suite of Android streaming apps. It's a very interesting concept that got a lot of good press at the expos.

do i need amazon prime for the fire tv box to access the shows? i can get netflix and hulu through the xbox1 now. is this what you have as far as the games?
Mohu Leaf 50 Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna Multi MH-110584 - Best Buy

did u put it in the attic and connect it to the splitters for the different rooms?

where do you buy the kodi box? and once i do that do i need the different accounts (hulu/netflix/prime). is kodi a one time buy or monthly fee?

just trying to learn about all the options.
For beginners, stick with the Fire Stick. It's reliable, backed by Amazon and because of it's popularity there will always be good, unofficial "support" for any sideloaded apps like Kodi. You don't need Amazon Prime, but it can make the experience better. I decided to try it out during a free 30-day trial and bought it at a promotional price when Shakespeare in Love won an award. I justify it with the free shipping and cheap prices of stuff I buy anyway, but no longer have to go out and visit a store to acquire. It's less than a Netflix membership.

We recently cut cable and I am purchasing an attic antenna. Question: Is there a way to convert from the coax cable coming from my antenna to HDMI to plug into my TV? My old cable box used to do this and I don't want to plug the coax right into my TV (for aesthetic reasons). Is there a converter available?

they sell converters. it's basically looks like a cable box, the same one used for people that still have non Digital TVs. what is ugly about plugging the coax into the back of the TV?

Thanks - the location of the TV is the issue. It's above my fireplace and coax doesn't run to it - only HDMI. The cable box was hidden away in the cabinet next to it. No easy way to run the coax to the TV without it being seen. I've looked for these converters and see a few. Anyone have recommendation on an inexpensive one?

I do have prime but I use primarily a smart TV which I have Amazon Video on. Curious if I am not foreseeing other benefits that "make the experience better" if I had a firestick?

You know, if you have the HDMI running there it shouldn't be that big of an issue to snake coax there too.

If content is solely the issue, probably not.

I dont have the patience for the TV apps. They seem to have a slow response in my experience. I have never used the Amazon Video app. I had it installed on my Roku, but I never got around to logging in. Kodi is probably the biggest draw to android-based devices which probably isn't an option with the TV apps.

The new Fire Stick is substantially faster than the first version and blazes in comparison to my TV apps.

from what I saw on youtube, I can put a scaled down version of Kodi directly on my Samsung smart TV but I am not sure I want to and like you I am not very happy with the responsiveness of the TV smart functions. I am glad it isn't just my TV

I forgot to include a link.

https://www.airtv.net/player/

I like that it incorporates the Google Play store. That should make installing Kodi pretty simple.

So I have been getting mailings as of late for AT&T Fiber. Is anyone here a subscriber? Are their speeds as good a they promote for streaming?

Viacom will eventually give in as the cable cutting continues.
http://cordcuttersnews.com/viacoms-ceo-is-no-fan-of-cord-cutting/

It’s no secret that Viacom is no fan of cord cutting*services such as Hulu or PlayStation Vue. Recently it pulled its channels from both services and has decided against adding its channels to YouTube TV. Now once again Viacom, which owns channels such as Spike, BET, CMT, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon, is pushing back against streaming.

I would like to have Viacom channels on my PS Vue, but they are not worth a $100 a month. (cable bill down from $140/month to PS vue $44/month)
all they are doing is encouraging people to go watch their shows on apps like Kodi, Mobdro, Showbox, etc..
I wonder if they will start getting pressure from their advertisers?
