Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (5 Viewers)

cut COX yesterday. bill was going up almost $30. nope, without reading thru 47 pages, any quick tips on cord cutting?

so far we have an XBOX 1 and downloaded the netflix app (we already have an account) and downloaded hulu. do i have to have an account for hulu to watch AMC?

the only 2 upcoming shows i'll miss is better call saul (AMC) and prison break (fox i believe)

other than that, what do you do for sports come football season? does an HD antenna pick up nbc/fox/cbs?

I'm in Youngsville also. We dropped Cox cable but kept their internet. Now, we have a Roku 3 with PS Vue, Netflix, and CBS All Access. This pretty musch replaces all of the features we needed through Cox. As for football, I bought a Mohu Leaf 50 and watch the games on that.
One thing that I would have done different now that I've changed everything is to buy an Amazon Fire TV box instead of the Roku. The Roku is not bad by any means but I could have gotten most of the same functionality out of the Fire TV and have the ability to sideload Kodi for anything else that I could need.
Good luck!!!

hd antenna will pick up football games and those local stations for news etc.

I have Netflix, and Amazon prime, and a fire t.v. box loaded with Kodi for everything else.

I cut the cord in 2013 and have not looked back. Welcome to the club.

You will need Internet, but most packages are under 50 bucks a month (I pay 34.99 in my area for 50 MPBS).

Internet 34.99, Netflix 11.99, Amazon 8.25 (99 per year). In the past I have opted for HBOnow for 14.99 per month usually every April - July for Silicon Valley, and Game of Thrones. But I am probably just going to roll the dice with Kodi for that too this year because I believe the seasons are staggered with GoT starting late.

Knocked a 180 dollar cable bill down to 55.23 per month. Fire T.V. is a one time buy of 89.99 (sale it can drop as low as 69.99). Also HD antenna will set you back around 20 for a decent one, up to around $100 if you need a good one. But that will vary for people, depending on your range to the broadcast towers.

But you can really mix and match, Hulu, Netflix, Prime. All are about 10 bucks a month, get the ones that fit your needs best. I.E. if your worried about missing out of more recent shows Hulu is probably better than netflix. Netflix is doing decent originals and is nice for binge watching seasons. But really once you get Kodi, you can probably do without everything else. I only keep netflix for my mom who has one of my 4 linked accounts because I don't think she would grasp Kodi, and she has gotten used to netflix. Prime i've had for a decade and got it for the 2 day free shipping. So any digital content they continue to add is just a bonus for me.

If you sign up for a streaming service like Vue, I don't think you'll need Hulu. In fact, I don't believe it has AMC anyway where I know Vue, Sling, and DirectNow do.

Going the legit route, you can purchase individual seasons of shows on Amazon. The major networks are available over the air and arguably looks better. P

Not even arguable.

Over the air broadcast waves are not decompressed. Your antenna pulls directly from that signal for viewing. You get the best quality picture possible.

Cable, even HD take those same signals and compress them and relay them to the cable box which decompresses them for viewing.

OTA > Coax

Not even debatable.

Guests are always shocked to find out we don't have cable. I have the antennae in the attic, so you don't see it in the living room. And the TV is hooked to my surround sound system. So a typical NFL game is in Dolby Digital 5.1. It's pretty awesome.

Also, you can get one of the more expensive longer range antennas (mohu for example), run it in the attic, split the signal w/ spliiter, and dump it into existing coax run left over from cable and presto - antenna signal to everywhere in your home and people can watch different channels at the same time.

Kodi will install on (most) any Android based box. The Fire TV works well for this. I believe you have to have Prime to access Amazon video, but why wouldn't you?

I cut the cable years ago. OTA for sports. I have my parent's comcast login for hbo, etc. Netflix, and Prime(had this for years just for the free shipping). I use newsgroups, sonarr(tv), and radarr(movies).

Jay, you do not need Amazon Prime for the Fire TV. You will have to create an Amazon account but don't have to buy the Prime membership.
Yes, that is the antenna that I have. I just have it hanging in my living room window with a couple suction cups. I don't know if you can "split" it to other rooms.
You don't need a "Kodi" box. It can be side loaded on most any Andriod based (Fire TV) streaming device. To my understanding it is basically a file sharing system. No monthly fee.

Play Satation Vue with Roku ...I kept Cableone Internet....150Mbps download/ 500GB plan for $80/month. I returned their crappy modem and got my own Netgear CM600 / 24 x 8/960Mbps cable modem and saved another $9/month...I should have done this YEARS ago!!

Those shows you are going to "miss" will be on Netflix in one year. Fear the Walking Dead season 2 just got added to Netflix. Better Call Saul season 2 will likely be added in a couple weeks.

There is only one show in all of TV that I actually want to see as it happens, and that is Game of Thrones. Which you can either pay 15 a month for 3 months for, or buy the episodes as they come out.. or wait for the DVD collection.

go to youtube and watch how to download Kodi on the firestick. We pay $10 a month to the local cable co. to get local channels. Everything else we watch on KODI, Movies and TV shows. I even watch saints games there. Normally after the game is over but sometimes I watch it live (rarely).
