Derek Carr won’t take a pay cut for 2025 but willing to restructure to help the cap (7 Viewers)

Would you said the same thing about Nick Foles, Brad Johnson, Trent Dillfer, Joe Flacco, Jimmy Garopplo, Kaepernick, Rex Grossman, Matt Hasselback, Jake Delhomme , Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins, Brock Purdy???

Is that enough names??? I never understand how people can say a QB will NEVER take us anywhere when there are so many examples of non elite QBs making it and winning the SB
The Saints are no where near and would never be good enough around Carr to carry him to a super bowl like these guys. You can name those few average QB's who have had playoff success but in reality I can name 15-20 more names of average QB's who have never done anything in the playoffs. Just because something outlandish has happened in the past doesn't mean its going to happen just because we have one of them.

There is no way that if Carolina or Atlanta signed Carr instead of us that you would be saying, oh he can bring the Panthers to a Super Bowl. Just because a guy puts a Saints uniform on that you have to exaggerate how good they are.

Winning as many games as possible is always the goal, better chance of playoffs that way.....

I would disagree with the new coach, because we really just don't gain much by cutting him but it wouldn't be a show stopper for me.....
Doing whatever it takes to win as many games as possible in the present would likely lead to the opposite over time. It'll leave you in draft purgatory and still out of the playoffs. Just like we've seen over the last few years.

I'd prefer a pretty hard reset over a season or two with a chance to get back to being great.

I’m old and don’t want to sit through a rebuild - but sadly it’s where the Saints undeniably are sitting.

We, as fans, have watched 4 more years slip by with bad football and bad prep and limited talent and now we are left with a team that needs the inevitable reset Loomis tried to kick down the road since 2020.

So we are faced now with another 2-3 years of bad football as the bad contracts hopefully get purged and the young talent hopefully comes in.

You could choose to see it that way. Or you could choose to see a young team grow into a veteran team. What I hate the most is watching a veteran team run into the ground with no hope for the future, which is what we've been doing for 5 years.

Dude, you're 48. You have time for at least 3 or 4 more rebuilds. 😀

Cut him, cut him like he's a Starbucks line and your flight is boarding

I'm with you. I'd rather cut Carr and restructure the rest of the team. Then we can see if we have anything in Rattler. I he succeeds we have our QB, if not, we have good draft picks to go get a QB next year or the year after.

It won't work. And you rather pay Ramczyk 18mil in new money? You guys are insane...

Get it in your heads he's getting restructured.

It one of the things I hated about DA. He would just keep playing veteran players that were not getting the job done. He refused to take a risk with the younger players in hopes of finding a gem unless he was forced to do it. Like the WR situation this year, he would not play the young guys like Means or Tipton early int he season so by the time everyone else was injured and they had to play, they had no experience. And, the way Means played before his injury, I do wonder if he was better than Cedrick Wilson and if he should not have been taking some snaps from Shaheed so Shaheed could stay healthy.

Ram isn't getting new money. He slashed his cap number to the minimum and will retire in June when even that minimum salary will come off the books.

Ram is going to retire and be a post June 1 cut/retire. Ram has nothing to do with it. But, if you cut Carr, convert the salaries of other guys to bonuses, you gain like $26 million in cap space next year. Tripplet has several articles discussing the options.

I've never been a fan of intentionally tearing down a roster to start over, but we are at the point where the natural progression is that we are going to take a step back and more or less start over anyway. I'd rather start that process now than in two years.

What we would gain is more cap space in future years which might be attractive to a new coach given our current cap situation. In addition to a year to find out what you have in Rattler and better draft picks if he turns out to be bad.

I certainly get the idea that every year is sacred and you try to win as many games as possible and I'm more or less always thinking that way, but if you are a HC tasked with rebuilding a team it's possible that the best strategy is to take one step back so you can take two steps forward in the future.

My understanding is the cap space savings is not all that much, maybe I'm wrong or misunderstood that and I totally get why a new coach may want to cut ties with Carr.....

I mean, it's not like they are mortgaging the future to keep Carr around 1 more year, unless I'm missing something.....But I totally get what you are saying....

That's not correct the max restructure space we have without Carr is 5 mil. Exactly the amount we need to sign draft picks with no room. 0 dollars to sign a backup qb or anything. You have to handle Ram before june 1st to get that. BTW you end up worse in 2026 by doing so.

It won't happen, get over it, stop spreading the bs like it's an option.
