Derek Carr won’t take a pay cut for 2025 but willing to restructure to help the cap (21 Viewers)

LOL so we build a really good defense and run the ball well. Guess what Mahomes has a really good defense. Jackson has a really good defense Even the elite QBs have good teams around them.
It's easy to just say let's build a really good defense. This is where drafting comes into play(I guess our drafting has been ok but not good or great) This is where free agency comes into play (can't really get great starters or good depth bc we don't have cap/ or like this year we slowly ate a little bit of it). It's going to take time. I have nothing against Carr, I just don't think he is the future, then again that will be up to the new coach, who I hope is an actually leader.

Lol well that’s a whole other discussion.

If we are staying with Carr, it helps us financially of course. I don’t see anyway he isn’t with us moving forward. However, if we hire Rizzi or someone like that who’s just a lame duck coach I’d like us to find a way to bite the bullet and just move on.

All I think about is it just really sucks for players like AK. He’s committed to being here and we just aren’t truly committed to putting a real winner on the field or haven’t had a coach in a while that can help Loomis do that.
All it does is kick the can down the road. Another year year of being way over the cap!

The Jets and the Colts should inquire about Carr, I doubt he wants to be here for a rebuild at his age and may be willing to work something out with his no trade clause.

If my employer wants to reduce the financial remuneration from my current and valid contract in order to sign other or younger colleagues (draft/FA), I would say: No thanks! Fulfill your contract, or pay me out and terminate me.

So yeah, i totally understand Carr. The FO/GM made the contract.
I think it's presumptuous to ask him that in public. Why not everyone else ?

I thought about the Colts as a landing spot, but that team tried three years in a row of winning with a veteran QB at the back end of their career and didn’t achieve much, I don’t think they want to go that route again. Besides, Darnold and Cousins will both be available without needing to give up any draft picks.

I mean, the cap situation isn't ideal, but it's certainly manageable. There definitely is room to create more space through restructures if needed, but I suspect we won't see that many restructures this offseason as Loomis will be trying to wean us off of some of the older players'contracts tying up cap space. That stuff takes time, but 2026 should be a year where there will be a lot more cap room and flexibility to make some deals and assemble a talented team.

Restructure is a fancy name for pay raise.

Best thing to do is cut him before his guarantees kick in and reboot.

This thread is identical to so many threads in Raider boards while Carr was there.
If you cut him, you still need a QB and there is zero cap space to sign one. So you go with Rattler or a rookie. And watch Carr end up in the top third of the league statistically for a few more years with another team. That would be painful.

Bro, I just don’t get it. How can a fanbase hate a guy so much?

I’m fully convinced that some people just don’t watch any other games to be able to understand that Carr is solid.

The fact that someone actually comped Minshew to him all but confirms it.

Unreal.

Carr is being held to a standard matched only by all-time NFL greats by many people here. Any negative play he has gets magnified to disproportionate levels.

Great post, totally agree.....that hate was on full display when DC was roundly criticized for the diving attempt for a 1st down in which he was injured.....In all my life I don't think I've ever witnessed a QB being criticized for what I would very much call an effort play....

I've also not seen any of the Carr haters propose a scenario where the alternative to Carr is actually an upgrade (or, better, if you're into the whole brevity thing....man).....

I mean he was the best "bridge" option QB available at the time, and he is very likely still our best option in 2025.....beyond that? Probably not, we will see....

If winning as many games as possible in 2025 is your main goal then yes, Carr is your best option. But, I could see a new HC coming in and wanting to reset it all. If so, he might want to find out what he has in Rattler, make the season about developing young players, get higher draft picks in 2026, and then either draft a young QB if Rattler doesn't work out or use the good picks to build around Rattler.

I'm really fine with either option as long as the new HC is the one making the decision.

Winning as many games as possible is always the goal, better chance of playoffs that way.....

I would disagree with the new coach, because we really just don't gain much by cutting him but it wouldn't be a show stopper for me.....

I just listed to Nick Underwood on Wake up Mintzy and he says the new coach will have a lot of say on who stays and who goes and could decide to move on from Carr, but he'd have to be a post June 1 cut, and good free agents will not wait until June 1 to sign with a team.

So it sounds like Loomis is willing to cut bait from Carr if the new coach wants to, so if He's our QB for the 2025 season, it's cause the new coach wanted him, not cause he was forced to have him by Loomis.

What we would gain is more cap space in future years which might be attractive to a new coach given our current cap situation. In addition to a year to find out what you have in Rattler and better draft picks if he turns out to be bad.

I certainly get the idea that every year is sacred and you try to win as many games as possible and I'm more or less always thinking that way, but if you are a HC tasked with rebuilding a team it's possible that the best strategy is to take one step back so you can take two steps forward in the future.
