Derek Carr world tour thread (updated with combine visits) (2 Viewers)

Yep…a QB playing at a very high level while on a rookie contract is pretty much the biggest advantage you can have in today’s game.

It’s just a very small hit rate. You may have to draft Kolb, Foles, Wentz before you get Hurts. And then you have just a short window because they want to get paid after 3 years now.

I felt the same at first but it seems the theory is he prefers the jets even if that means seeing what happens with AR. He’d rather be their second choice than our 1st. Granted that could be false and I have no idea what their our offer was
That's not necessarily true. Jets haven't made him an offer and our offer is already on the table. We may have a deal already in place where we match/beat the Jets offer and he comes here.

He's just waiting for the cards to fall with Rodgers. He could easily get $7-8 million a year more if the Jets and us start bidding against each other. Or he could just take the offer already on the table but there's no rush for him to do so.

The Saints are a whole average year older than the Jets, both defenses are arguably just as good as each other - except the Saints were missing a shutdown CB most of the season, Saints are arguably more talented everywhere on offense short of RB and OLines are a draw, and Saleh is also a defensive head coach that hasn't proven anything offensively in the NFL. At one point the Jets had the #32 offense and #4 defense. But yeah, totally not DA or PC.

Jets o-line is a mess. They played poorly last year, have given up the 3rd most sacks in the league since their GM took over, and 13 out of 18 are set to to be free agents.

I think they have one good guard, Tomlinson. Becton is an overweight bust. Mitchell was a 4th round rookie last year with short arms. Center is a FA. We're in significantly better shape than they are there. They have a deeper stable of RB's and I think I'd give them the edge at TE.

Saleh hasn't shown to be any better than Allen and I'd take Carmichael as OC over Hackett any day of the week.

All are definitely possible, but not necessarily a given.

Here's some other possibilities:
  • FA starts and other QBs become available. Maybe they're as good as DC4, maybe they're not. But given the laws of supply & demand, you're never more valuable than when you are the only option. When "other options" hit the market, your value MAY actually decrease.
  • speaking of "other options", if Rodgers doesn't pan out for the Jets, they might prefer JimmyG due to previous familiarity with him for certain coaches on Jets staff
  • LJ8 may become available, and a viable trade option for some teams, depending on tag Ravens use on him
  • Daniel Jones may become available, and is a younger option than DC4; with upside potential; i think DC4 has reached his potential
  • Justin Fields is still lurking in the background as a possible trade piece; Bears supposedly want to trade out of #1 pick (makes sense, IMO) and looking for a ransom to do just that (not sure they'll get it, given the top players in this draft and the teams in those top spots); they may get stuck with that #1 pick and take a QB? If that happens, I'm fairly certain Fields will become available....if not this year, then next. I'd be interested in Fields! In fact, I wonder if the Saints aren't looking into that behind the scenes?

While DC4 has every right to wait for as long as he wants, for the deal he hopes to receive, he's playing a game that might actually result in LESS money than what he's currently offered. For whatever reason....his market seems to have been set. 1 team! We can argue over the Jets and Panthers, or some invisible 4th team, but factually speaking.....I think we'd hear about a 2nd offer, because the bidding will begin. That hasn't materialized, for whatever reason, and there's about to be several more (less expensive) options become available. That doesn't bode well for DC4. And those last 3 scenarios are very real possibilities at this time of writing. They could all be moved, or they could be retained by their current teams. If any become viable options, DC4 will likely earn less than offered.

Can't blame the dude for wanting to earn more than he's been offered, and I'm certain it's disappointing. I wish I was born richer and better looking, but the reality of that situation is that I wasn't, and I have to work with what I've got. What DC4 has is ONE offer on the table, and the prospect of "other options" to become available on the very near horizon. And maybe i've completely mis-read the situation, but it just seems like DC4 is looking for ANY reason not to come here. Even IF the Saints have a verbal agreement that "we'll match your best offer", it's been 3+ weeks since that meeting; at what point do you recognize that your best offer has already been received? At this point, it just seems like DC4 is jumping through hoops to solicit a 2nd offer, which just hasn't materialized. And at this point it looks like he doesn't even want to be a Saint, even if that's not the case...

I don’t like seeing this about Carr.
Joey Bosa on Carr: "We knew once we hit him a few times, he really gets shook. And you saw on (Covington's) sack, he was pretty much curling into a ball before we even got back there. Great dude, great player...but we know once you get pressure on him, he kind of shuts down."
Every QB gets rattled when the pressure gets to them.

For 2022, the Saints (19th) and Jets (17th) were both middle of the pack in adjusted sack rate for their offensive lines. That said, I agree they have more questions at that position group than we do going into 2023.

Yeah you’d have to think adding Penning to the mix helps there. At least you’d hope he’s healthy.

The guy just got out of seven years with one of the most notoriously mismanaged franchises in the League.
I don’t blame him for checking out a few teams.

Yup, Carr and his agent don't need to rush anything, we would they? It strikes me as odd that there are some folks that think he would sign immediately with the Saints or any team really.....not realistic.....

Between injury issues and Andy Dalton being a statue that ranking is probably our bottom. Meanwhile the Jets are pretty much a complete question mark.

Carolina is definitely just a leverage throw-in. Carr’s camp is desperate for some counter-offer validation action.

As we all know, when Loomis/Harley put a value on someone, they don’t budge…unless they absolutely have to.
That's why I'm glad we didn't trade out of FOMO...let it play out exactly the way it is playing out. We can end up with Carr for < $30M...I'm thinking in the 25-28 range.

Still not my preference, but its better than just throwing money at him while plugging our ears and screaming "franchise QB"

Whole thing could be as simple as Carr really wants to be in New Orleans, doesn’t entirely like the money offer, and the Saints have essentially said “Bring us a better offer from another team first.”

Just spit-ballin’.

With Daniel Jones asking for $45 million, would you be okay with just signing for under $30 million if you were Carr?
Maybe not, but keep in mind that's what Jones is asking. Whether he gets close to that is an open question. Don't think anyone is gonna give him $35 million much less $40. $45 is just bonkers.

That's hardly unique to Carr. True of most QBs. You give him protection and he's very good. If he gets hit a lot, different story.

Exactly....his agent is asking for it....opening negotiations....and the situation couldn't be more different for those 2 QB's....

Daniel Jones is 25, Derek Carr turns 32 later in March

Jones just led the Giants to their 1st playoff game since 2016 and their 1st playoff game win since....2011.....

I would say Jones will likely not get $45mil, but he does have immense leverage right now.....I wouldn't be shocked if he got between 35-40mil.....

Oh, did I already say that Jones is.....25......

Yeah, 25 vs 32 is a huge difference.
