Derek Carr world tour thread (updated with combine visits) (5 Viewers)

Yup, Carr and his agent don't need to rush anything, we would they? It strikes me as odd that there are some folks that think he would sign immediately with the Saints or any team really.....not realistic.....

I thought he would sign prior to FA and that it would max his value not competing with Jimmy G and Rodgers as options. It looks like Carr's market is smaller than expected, only 2-3 teams, and maybe the Saints are the only ones that will offer him a contract prior to the draft. Maybe he is hoping Seattle, NYG, and Balt can't figure it out with incumbents. Or Rodgers staying in GB changes the math.

Yeah, I'm not surprised he's been taking his time. There's no real sense of urgency yet. As long as it gets done before the new league year starts, he doesn't have much to worry about.

Have to admit, seeing Rodgers go to the Jets would be history repeating itself. The way Farve/Rodgers saga played out, to how the Rodgers/Love situation is playing out…and then Farve going to the Jets, and then Rodgers potentially signing with the Jets as well. I may have to see this go down
Hope so. Then next year Roger goes to Minnesota. Then we will meet him in the championship game. Cool.

The allure of playing for NY isn’t the same as it was in 1975 or 1985. Heck, it even doesn’t have the allure it had in 2005.
This is a post streaming era. Everyone gets every game. You see a lot of players make their championship marks and HOF careers in small markets. Payton Manning. Brees. Favre. Rodgers.
Mahomes. Burrow. Allen.
Being in NY or any other big market is no longer a requirement.

And to your point about it being better for a Evangelist to be in the South; is it?
Because I’ve lived here my entire life and there is vast difference between New Orleans and the Bible Belt South. IMO, NOLA and Atlanta are the two cities in the Deep South that aren’t “Bible Belt” towns.
You go 50 miles out of N.O. and it's much like the bible belt south

But this is the dichotomy I’m talking about.
You can say the same thing about Dallas and the rest of Texas.
Atlanta and the rest of Georgia.

With Carr, I’d say 9-8.
I'm thinking 10-7 if we can stay fairly healthy. Although I don't have much faith in DA I think having DC gives him more confidence in the O and maybe makes him a bit less conservative. DC is very good at pre-snap reads ( McDaniels discouraged him from using that ability to change plays ) I think that will give PC the confidence to open up the playbook more.

I’m looking at the schedule and I’m sorta leaning to that.
With Carr, you go 5-1/4-2 in the division (possibly spilt Atlanta and Carolina, sweep Tampa), Chicago, GB (without Rodgers), Rams, Texans, and Colts.

All are definitely possible, but not necessarily a given.

Here's some other possibilities:
  • FA starts and other QBs become available. Maybe they're as good as DC4, maybe they're not. But given the laws of supply & demand, you're never more valuable than when you are the only option. When "other options" hit the market, your value MAY actually decrease.
  • speaking of "other options", if Rodgers doesn't pan out for the Jets, they might prefer JimmyG due to previous familiarity with him for certain coaches on Jets staff
  • LJ8 may become available, and a viable trade option for some teams, depending on tag Ravens use on him
  • Daniel Jones may become available, and is a younger option than DC4; with upside potential; i think DC4 has reached his potential
  • Justin Fields is still lurking in the background as a possible trade piece; Bears supposedly want to trade out of #1 pick (makes sense, IMO) and looking for a ransom to do just that (not sure they'll get it, given the top players in this draft and the teams in those top spots); they may get stuck with that #1 pick and take a QB? If that happens, I'm fairly certain Fields will become available....if not this year, then next. I'd be interested in Fields! In fact, I wonder if the Saints aren't looking into that behind the scenes?

While DC4 has every right to wait for as long as he wants, for the deal he hopes to receive, he's playing a game that might actually result in LESS money than what he's currently offered. For whatever reason....his market seems to have been set. 1 team! We can argue over the Jets and Panthers, or some invisible 4th team, but factually speaking.....I think we'd hear about a 2nd offer, because the bidding will begin. That hasn't materialized, for whatever reason, and there's about to be several more (less expensive) options become available. That doesn't bode well for DC4. And those last 3 scenarios are very real possibilities at this time of writing. They could all be moved, or they could be retained by their current teams. If any become viable options, DC4 will likely earn less than offered.

Can't blame the dude for wanting to earn more than he's been offered, and I'm certain it's disappointing. I wish I was born richer and better looking, but the reality of that situation is that I wasn't, and I have to work with what I've got. What DC4 has is ONE offer on the table, and the prospect of "other options" to become available on the very near horizon. And maybe i've completely mis-read the situation, but it just seems like DC4 is looking for ANY reason not to come here. Even IF the Saints have a verbal agreement that "we'll match your best offer", it's been 3+ weeks since that meeting; at what point do you recognize that your best offer has already been received? At this point, it just seems like DC4 is jumping through hoops to solicit a 2nd offer, which just hasn't materialized. And at this point it looks like he doesn't even want to be a Saint, even if that's not the case...
DC even when FA starts is going to be the best FA QB available only one close is Jimmy G.
Jones has been below average up until this past yr and he still was not that great
All the rest will have to be traded for and command much higher salaries
The difference with DC is that he became available way before FA started so that really makes the 3 1/2 weeks a non-factor because there is no rush to grab him before options run out
Plus there are a few QBs hitting the FA market that would have a direct effect on his market value so it makes sense to wait a bit .
It has nothing to do with if he wants to be here or not

Jim Everett 2.0?
Lol, I can’t say that wasn’t the first thought in my head too. Ofc you can say no QB likes getting hit except TH. But Bosa specifically mentioned Carr. Bosa is a freak and anyone in the right mind wouldn’t want this guy to hit them. You know if he does he’ll stand up and cheer and the crowd would go nuts as well. So if I were a Qb I’d have an extra awareness of where this guy is at all times. As a Saints fan, it’s been awhile since we had to consider, “is our Qb a wimp?” DB certainly wasn’t, JW either. AD takes a sack without curling up on the ground while trying to call TO. If we ever sign Carr I’ll then do a deep dive on his play. I refuse to invest the time before it’s time.

I’ve been all in on Carr even before the Saints were publically interested because he’s DA’s best play and probably only his only QB play. (SP had every QB wanting to play for him)

I thought this was a good segment from AFR, regarding the QB situation. The Jalen Hurts part really hammered the point home for me, about getting a QB on a rookie deal, and resetting. As opposed to overpaying for mediocrity.

i have to give Matt some credit on his recent AFR which showed that a team doesn’t necessarily have to go 2-15 for two years to reset for a QB in the top 5 of the draft. He mentioned, Kc went 7-9 the year before they drafted in front of us to get Mahones. Then there’s QBs that slip down, such as Hurts. Then there’s ones gotten in the middle of the draft like Russell Wilson. Even with that said, at 29, we cannot package enough to get to the top 10, imo. Not without doing something stupid. But has we held our own pick from last year, then we’d be drafting where our record indicates, and that position is possible to draft into the top 10 of the draft.

Hurts is in his 3rd yr with an excellent team with a very good Oline and very good weapons around him AND a top 5 defense. So if we draft HH @ 40 and don't sign Carr and he busts we've wasted the rest of Cam,Davis and probably AK's career. Almost the same if he takes 3 yrs like Hurts to MAYBE develop then we have 1yr before he signs his next deal @ 25-30m because that's gonna be the going rate for a mid tier QB in 4 yrs. AND he'll be 29, 2yrs younger than Carr. He's not a Burrow or Maholmes that can come in and 1st or 2nd yr play at an elite or near elite level
I don’t know if you all have picked up on this trend. But it seems that our D plays much better like 100% better when they believe in the offense. Or believe that all they need to do is force a couple three and outs and they win. This is why they tended to get better as the offense took shape. After JW going down vs TB they regressed Bad. It wasn’t until Ad regrouped the offense that they got better. I think this is why you see Cam Jordan being vocal about getting players, such as Carr for example

Jets o-line is a mess. They played poorly last year, have given up the 3rd most sacks in the league since their GM took over, and 13 out of 18 are set to to be free agents.

I think they have one good guard, Tomlinson. Becton is an overweight bust. Mitchell was a 4th round rookie last year with short arms. Center is a FA. We're in significantly better shape than they are there. They have a deeper stable of RB's and I think I'd give them the edge at TE.

Saleh hasn't shown to be any better than Allen and I'd take Carmichael as OC over Hackett any day of the week.
Three of the jets Oline are Fa’s I believe. We have a far superior oline

That's right they do, we have a better O-Line, and they also have some defensive players that are free agents too. Here's just a few names, Sheldon Rankins, Solomon Thomas, Kwon Alexander and LaMarcus Joyner to name a few. They have at least 24 free agents on both offense and defense and most were starters last season. They have a long row to hoe before anyone can consider them favorites to win anything in their division.
