Derek Carr world tour thread (updated with combine visits) (1 Viewer)

That would be good.

I was also listening to Sirius NFL radio and Move the Chains. Kirwan (former Jets FO guy) and Miller were talking about the Jets.

They made it sound like the Jets’ wouldn’t be appealing and the Jets would have to overpay for someone like Carr because it’s not a good situation there.

Yeah, I watched David Carr 2 nights ago on NFL Network discuss what his brother is looking for and it described the Saints.

Well he can't be signed by anyone till March 15 after 3:59. New NFL year. No reason for him not to visit other teams. Watching the offense last year there was a complete lack of creativity. Does Pete break out of his conservative un-creative style? Doubt it.
He can be signed right now. He was released to be a free agent, not a guy who's contract expired. Those guys have to wait. Carr also won't count against a team for the comp pick calculation.

This is not true. That date and time pertains to expiring contracts. Carr’s contract isn’t expiring; he’s been released from it, and is free to sign with whoever he wants whenever he wants.

Which is why I find it very interesting that we are already restructuring guys, something we historically wait until the last minute before free agency to do.
Interesting.. good tidbit there thanks.

To call Hurts elite is a bit premature, let him perform at a very high level for a couple more yrs. He was not that good in his first 2 yrs
They called Burrow elite after he led his team to a SB in his first season as a starter and rightfully so. Not saying who is “better,” but why wouldn’t Jalen be considered elite for doing the same thing?

I would like to pushback halfway.
There’s this line of thinking that tearing the entire franchise apart, trading everyone for draft picks and tanking for the number one pick is an automatic way to a franchise QB.
Mahomes wasn’t picked at one.
Hurts wasn’t either.
Allen wasn’t.

Yes, but here's QBs in the first round since 2018:

2018 - Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson
2019 - Kyler Murry, Daniel Jones, Dwayne Haskins
2020 - Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, Jordan Love
2021 - Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Mac Jones
2022 - Kenny Picket

Some years you have one or two hits. And some years you have squat. And in the last 5 years you only have 2 elite QBs, with Hebert and Allen not too far behind. How many of those guys will be worse than Carr?

Yes, you can find an elite QB in the first 2 rounds, but you just have to be lucky. And you won't know if the guy you drafted is "the guy" till about year 3. And, guys like Cam Jordan and DD are likely gone and there's no telling if the defense will still be as good with those guys gone. And if he's not the guy, you're set back 3 years. The chances of being bad for a long time are pretty high.

Finding someone on the level of Burrow or Mahomes or Hurts is possible, but the odds of getting a Baker Mayfield is greater. So, if you have a chance to get a guy like Carr who will immediately be the best QB in the NFCS and one of the best QBs in the NFC, you jump on it whatever it costs. Especially if you're a coach that's going to be fired if you get it wrong.

With the right moves, Carr can get the Saints to the NFC Championship game. I don't think they win that game until DA can figure out how to defend Hurts, but that's as good as we've had since 2009. I'll take that as opposed to relying on a rookie and only winning 4 or 5 games.

It’s well known that Carr and Da have stayed in contact all of this time. Hmm, Not one or two years after DA was canned, which would make sense for most. (You don’t see the person for awhile and life gets busy and you lose touch). Not even 3 or 4 years afterwards, but 9 YEARS. I find this interesting because they must really be best friends. So they probably planned on teaming back up years ago, if an opportunity would arise. I mean, before he was even officially off the team he was in NOLA with the fam for two days. Lol. And we were his ONLY stop! With this long of a friendship, I’m sure Carr has informed Da of the exact type of offensive system he choses and the types of weapons and strategy. ( It would also make sense why DAs d literally shut him down. The Saints were the only team to shut them out).

I still believe Carr will be a Saint and it’s a slam dunk for all sides. If all what I wrote above is true, then I’d expect the signing sooner than later. No later than 2 weeks before FA starts makes sense. The more I think about it, they’ve already discussed contract terms and have verbally agreed, so theres no need to even leverage other teams’ offers. I’ll be curious if PC becomes Carrs first casualty. Possibly not tho, bc it’s a similar system as Gruden. I would expect Carr to require an elite TE like Waller. And a stud RB to go with Kamara. 29 and 40 could be ND TE Michael Meyers and Gibbs or the best RB available at 40. Speaking of Kamara, It’s not the time to turn on him. Kamara is still a stud RB regardless of his legal troubles. Any other TES or RBs in the later rounds?

Please describe in detail lol

Here's the clip. The Saints fit what he's looking for. Obviously some will call out the PC's playcalling from last season, but if you look to 2012 PC did pretty darn good with Brees who could do everything he wanted and had an assortment of weapons at his disposal. That was not the case in 2022, although we do have some bright spots with the new additions of Olave/Shaheed and emergence of JJ. The piece what was missing was a legit X.

3 main things :

Top 15 defense that give football back and that can stop specific teams
Good offensive line / are you gonna be able to run the football against favorable boxes
The playcaller and does that vibe with what I wanna do. Freedom to change the play at the line.

Other things :

Chemistry with the coaches / front office
Is the talent that was there last year gonna be there this year (free agency/draft/cap room)

The thing that still baffled me is the fact that the play calling was very predictable and questionable. Dalton was not a Brees. (Never was). But he was serviceable. In some games, Dalton had some good drives that got us some scores. But why wasn't those drives and calls replicated throughout the rest of the game. For example.....2nd and short. Run. Taysom in....Taysom is running. It is rare that we go play actions. It is rare that Taysom got a chance to throw. I understand Dalton isn't a play maker but he was good enough to run a decent offense. He was once a franchise quarterback. Pete doesn't have his safety net anymore to bail him out. He is playing scared for some reason.

I hear what you're saying but Dalton was never a Franchise QB. Once upon a time he was one of the top 20 QBs, but there's only around 8 franchise QBs in the league at any given time. I've never thought of Dalton as someone who was going to win games for the Bengals.

That being said. If you can't get Carr or Fields, I think Dalton is better than any other option currently in the NFL.

Serviceable is a good description, limited is another that applies. I think when you're at best serviceable and limited combined with everything else, then you get what we got on offense. The offense that PC is used to calling has a X, there's not getting around that. The 2022 team didn't have one once MT went down. They have 1 dynamic playmaker in Shaheed, 1 smooth playmaker in Olave (he needs to get better with contact both defenders and ground), 1 big receiving TE who is still developing in JJ, the joker in Taysom and the Paul Pierce of running backs in AK. That's it. Even if we ran it back with Dalton, adding a X and better skillsets at RB with a few less injuries and the team offense would be better. Add Carr with a completed offense (X, stretch TE,better RBs and health) and that is something to have some tempered excitement about. If Carr was only here 5 healthy seasons, he'd slot in as #2 All-Time in Saints history as he would pass everyone else in yards, TDs and probably even wins or at least be within a win or two of Hebert.

A reminder that Derek Carr is now more than a week removed from his visit to N.O., and there has yet to be any rumblings of him visiting with any other franchise, even post-release.

Meanwhile, New Orleans is uncharacteristically getting a one month early start on restructuring player contracts to get under the cap.
