HB71 - Requires Louisiana Schools to display the 10 commandments passes with Bipartisan Support 82 - 19 (1 Viewer)

Great. Fine. Just give equal time to the Five Pillars of Islam, the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, and those of any other Faith who ask
Yeah, that's not happening.

I was actually watching the news last night, and there was a reporter asking people (Christians I assume) if they felt that the US should be a Christian nation, and the responses were generally positive toward that idea. Then follow up questions were asked, basically whether other religions should thus be not allowed, and most responders backtracked and said that, no, people should be able to have freedom of religion.

What I gathered from the exchanges was that, while there was an appreciation for freedom of religion, there was also a sense that their religion should have a preferred place in our society, which would be the sentiment that drives laws like these. In other words, it's okay for other religions to exist, so long as everyone pays deference to my religion.

I guess by Plato's definition of "politics" that's true. But as with most words the meaning has evolved. So now when we say politics, we really mean partisan politics because them terms partisan politics and politics have become synonymous.

But, that's why it's so hard to maintain an "EE" board without politics invading or having to limit topics that should not involve partisan politics, because no matter what you do someone will try to turn almost every conversation into one about politics.
and i'd also argue that's why it's important to draw the distinction between 'partisanship' and 'politics' more broadly -
discussions of race, gender, ethnicity, et al can be labeled 'politics' when they are often way more sociocultural discussions
it's a policy that can often protect regressive ideas - and no policy should do that

IMO, many Christian's have been convinced that Christianity is somehow under attack in this country when nothing could be further from the truth. Nobody is stopping anyone from practicing Christianity anywhere they want or whenever they want. (The same is true of the vast majority of other religions, with some restrictions on things like Santeria and Native American peyote ceremonies.) What is stopped is the government promoting any specific religion and that's not close to the same thing as stopping anyone from practicing Christianity. But, for *reasons*, Christians have been told, and some believe, that they are being persecuted so they fight back and support dumb laws like this one.

Some of this likely also stems from some Christians' interpretation of the Christian Bible as requiring them to convert others to Christianity. And, I think we all know the terrible things that were done in the name of spreading Christianity to the non-believers. And that inclination to proselytize, has been weaponized by the unscrupulous.

i gotta get out of this State.

State Legislators are busy kicking around laws for displaying 10 Commandments in schools, while the insurance market is on fire. ( and thats just ONE item that needs IMMEDIATE resolution) . This happens time and time again and nothing changes. We are bottom of just about EVERY METRIC that pertains to education, income, infrastructure and folks in Baton Rouge are literally proposing a law to display the 10 Commandments.

WHAT IN THE !@#!@# is going on?!?!?

I tend to agree. But we both know that in the end partisan politics will enter those conversations because someone will push it that way.

And FWIW, I think it's a terrible thing because it further adds to the polarization and dehumanizing of the "other side" which is the goal of those who benefit from partisan politics in the first place. If we can't even try to have reasonable conversations about difficult questions on which people have partisan feelings, then there is no way to get past those partisan feelings. And if we can't hear what may be reasonable positions on things that we always thought was just partisan bullshirt, we will never know if there is common ground or if we can create common ground.

I had a similar reaction when I first heard this. I had never before even thought that I had to get out of this state, but this made me think it. It's not going to happen with me for various reasons, but it's hard to try to convince others to stay and help bring this sate into the 21st Century when things like this happen.

I have a good friend who is a Freshmen Legislator in the House. He has navigated Baton Rouge successfully for years professionally but his eyes have been opened to some of the idiocy that happens in Baton Rouge. I hate to say it and I have said this to him but it will only be a matter of time before he is wrapped up in the middle of the same idiocy.

It's just plain stupid and unconstitutional.....unfortunately it doesn't surprise me.....I love LA and always will but it's a backwards arse state.....Most of the idiotic politicians are Christian nationalists that don't believe in the separation of church and state.....morons and liars all of them who support this nonsense......

its the truth- he HAS to join ranks or he wont get a darn thing done ( if thats what he true intentions are- and i believe that MANY enter with this mindset but quickly find out that in order to make things happen for your constituents, you gotta "play ball )

and at that point, its over.

The "system" in place is in place for a reason. Those who think they can "buck that system" are usually 1 term and out.

And when the courts throw it out, it would be used to turn a certain suspectable part of the population against the judicial branch even more.

Same- im 53 on the back 9 of career - one in college and one in HS. so at the very least, i have 6-10 years left here. But both my girls know that once the youngest graduates college, moms n i are OUT. Yall can follow if yall want.

My oldest is full of hope and vigor- getting masters in Ed. Her BF wants to be in government- he too all bright eyed and bushy tailed. Im like " listen i want you two, upon graduation, to travel- go see what the world has to offer in way of lifestyle etc" THEN come back and find employment and start career...but understand that the career paths you both chose are rife with compromise and hardship. And DONT LET it make you cynical or put out that youthful "fire" you both have. It will certainly try.

I just dont see a really bright future for their careers here in this state. Youngest wants to be NICU nurse- she can do that ANYWHERE.

He made the mistake of asking me "how do we fix Insurance?" and boy did I light him up pretty good. After the session he told me he know understood exactly where I was coming from.
