Hill vs Siemian why is there a debate? (4 Viewers)

A lot of good posts in this thread. I was amazed at Siemian's poise In coming off the bench after probably single digit reps in practice. Other than the dreadful int that was called back, he threw well.

I do not think that square peg Taysom Hill fits the round hole of starting quarterback, to steal someone else's metaphor. Rather, his best value is as a versatile offensive weapon. With Michael Thomas's likely absence this year--that's my opinion only-- we need every offensive weapon at our disposal. That means having Hill as a utility player.

Look at Tampa Bay, for instance. They have three running backs who could start for many teams. We have Kamara and now Ingram. They have three tight ends who could start for many teams. We have a regressing Trautman, converted WR Johnson, Vannett, and Griffin. They have at least three wide receivers who could start for many teams. We have Callaway, Smith, and a cast of extras. Is there any doubt that we need to put our offensive players in the best possible place to succeed? The way to put our offense in its best possible position is to leave Hill right where he is and roll the dice with former starting QB Siemian in my view.

Outside of this forum, there really isn't a debate. If TH does not clear concussion protocol, Trevor will be the starter. If TH does clear, TH will be the starter and Trevor will be #2. CSP has stated this numerous times. He even stated it again in his post-game press conference. I do not see that changing.

Given the lack of playmakers at the WR position, I'd prefer to have TH start given his athleticism and mobility, but that's jut MHO. We'll see as the week progresses.

Despite my post above, this is a good argument for starting Hill at QB. Will he clear concussion protocol? Let's hope so.

My eyes tell me we may catch lightning in a bottle similar to Philly and Foles….based on how comfortable Siemien looked with no prep time and the style QB he plays.

My gut tells me Taysom gets the nod bc of Coaches infatuation with him and the play calling possibilities Taysom affords us.

If it’s Taysom, he needs to spend an hour a day throwing go routes.

Then the next injury report we'll hear is that Hill is out with a damaged rotator cuff due to throwing too many 'go routes'! :covri:

Now we are dealing with revisionist history. The "it was close" was a narrative not backed up by the preseason game stats or in camp. I get the Taysom supporters want him to get another shot, which is fine but at no point were either of them better than Jameis (14 TDs-3 INTs) with a 6-2 record throwing to one of the worst receiving groups in the league, an O line with people in and out, and away from home for more than a month. If we had decent receivers he would not have had to run so much. I feel like some of you were happy Jameis got hurt and are routing for him not to be back with the team. Sad.
ALL DIS!!!!

Siemian did a very good job coming in unexpectedly on Sunday. Taysom Hill is not as good as his fans think, nor is he not as "not good" as his detractors think. I am of the opinion that we are downgrading from Winston to Hill. I also think that this season, Payton has built the offense around a system quarterback position and not around a player. So it makes sense to me that either Hill or Siemian will work well.

Payton will have special plays drawn up for Hill no matter what position he plays. This season has become a special challenge in many ways. Now with Michael Thomas out for the season, we are forced to grind with few elite players on offense. Ingram and Kamara will have their work cut out for them. (So glad we got Ingram when we did)

Thing is has Trevor really ever had a chance? He was plying pretty decent in Denver until he was quickly benched for the new toy (Osweiler). Then bounced around as a backup. The kid has skills, but like Winston, this is probably his first stop where he has a coach who takes pride in putting his QBs in a position to win. Unless it’s a pride thing, After this weekend and probably blowing out Atlanta, it’s going to be really hard for Payton to bench him for Hill.
Yes, he had two years to start in Denver and got worse over time.

After the 2015 Super Bowl season, Peyton Manning retired and his back up, Brock Osweiler, signed with Houston because they were willing to pay way more than Denver. So Elway drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round (who was really terrible), but the coach was Gary Kubiak, who favored and started Siemian, who he had personally selected in the 7th round the year before.

Siemian showed he wasn't the answer, but the next year, 2017, they didn't sign anyone because they hoped that Lynch would be ready. But he was a complete bust and they were again stuck with Siemian, who had regressed. Eventually they did bring back Osweiler off the street (after he'd been traded to and then cut by Cleveland) because the situation between Siemian and Lynch was so bad. All three quarterbacks were gone after the season.

It is what it is. We had a great run with Brees, but we've entered quarterback hell. For a preview of what's likely in front of us, let's look again to Denver. Since Manning retired in 2016, they've had the following starting quarterbacks:

Trevor Siemian
Paxton Lynch
Brock Osweiler
Case Keenum
Joe Flacco
Brandon Allen
Drew Lock
Jeff Driskel
Brett Rypien
Kendall Hinton*
Teddy Bridgewater

I don't think we're in QB hell...Maybe the problem in Denver is Denver, that's 10 QBs since 2016 and not one of them hit? Sounds like an organizational issue as opposed to a player issue.

Same can be said about Carolina...Matt Rhule should be on the hot seat with how poorly they managed the QB position in these 2 seasons.

Choosing between a career back up or a gadget player, or otherwise hoping that a fourth round rookie can step up, is the very definition of quarterback hell.

Why the discussion?

Let alone that Siemian took over in a game in which his drives produced 22 points, Taysom has had a concussion which put him out for 3 weeks now.

That sounds like such serious damage that you can’t put him under center nor let him play his ST army knife role.

Iam really concerned about his health status. Never heard of a 3 week concussion
And its not his first either
According to this draft sharks website, this is his first concussion.

Do you have a link that indicates that he has had other concussions?

Yeah, but this is all due to a midseason injury to our 5-2 starter...Cincy wasn't in QB hell when Burrow went down last year, they just packed it up and said oh well better luck next season...if we go into next season w/ the Siemian v Hill options going into week 1...then we might be getting closer to QB hell.
